Body: So about a month ago I started seeing advertising in Chicago almost everywhere for a website called www.ihatesarahmarshall.com. The ads were everywhere. Billboards, on the sides of busses, on the tops of taxi cabs. It's just black writing on a white background that says "I hate Sarah Marshall". Now I had no idea what this was since the ad gives no information except for a web address. And since I don't usually go to websites just based on enigmatic ads all over the city, I never knew what it was. Until I kept commenting on it to my girlfriend about how stupid it was and she eventually found out it must have been for a movie. I still have not heard anyone say anything about this movie, but apparently it's already out. I guess they were really hinging on this overblown ad campaign to bring people in. I have no interest. But then I heard my girlfriend's roommate mention something. What about all of the people in Chicago (or any other big city that might have this ad campaign) who are actually named Sarah Marshall. It must be a common name. A quick white pages search came up with 39 people in the Chicago city proper with the name Sarah Marshall. And what about all of the tourists? They have to come into town and see huge ads that simply says "I always hated you Sarah Marshall" and "Yes you do look fat in those jeans Sarah Marshall." Don't you think that's a pretty horrible thing? Maybe if the name was something totally uncommon like Conoleezza McYohobamslafhenhosenberg. But this is like having signs that say "F-U-C-K YOU MIKE SMITH!" You are offending a lot of people. I actually just went to the site www.ihatesarahmarshall.com and wasn't even sure at first that this was an ad for the movie. It just looks like someone's blog. This new kind of viral marketing is confusing as well. Forgetting_Sarah_Marshall's detail page
Body: Burn After Reading. I just saw it last night. Another Coen brothers success in my opinion. Maybe it won't reach the comedy cult status of The Big Lebowski or O Brother, Where Art Thou? But it should appease those who were disappointed with the recent Intolerable Cruelty and The Ladykillers (both of which I however loved greatly). Who here has seen it? What did you think? POSSIBLE SPOILERS It has all the expected elements of the Coen brothers. Stupid people getting in over their heads. Ransom (or more like blackmail) / Kidnapping (or suspected kidnapping). Quirky people. Shocking violence bundled close with humor. Anyone have a favorite moment? Mine might have been when George Clooney's character catches the guy from the law firm that his wife hired to follow him.
Body: Last Saturday I saw Paris, je t'aime and I'm not sure why I haven't posted about it yet, because it was a real treat. If you don't know about it, it's 18 short films all by different directors that take place in Paris and have at least some connection to the idea of love. Almost all of them were enjoyable to me in a way. I'd recommend this one definitely. The final segment directed by Alexander Payne sums everything up perfectly in his particular style. It's really wonderful and hilarious.I had a few other favorites, but was wondering if anyone else has seen this as well.
Body: Considering the X-Files ran for so long on Fox, it's probably odd that a sci-fi fan like me saw only a handful of episodes when they first aired. I caught a bunch of re-runs on cable during the college years, but now... BLOCKBUSTER ONLINE!!! DVD sets from the beginning! My wife and I are midway through Season 4 -- lovin it. Many of you have seen the entire series, but for me it's fresh. We're trying to watch an episode or two each week. Sure, production values were only as good as a TV show in the 90s would get you, but it holds up really well over time. I need to start reviewing each episode, if for no other reason than to have my own personal log of what was good/not good.
</spout:lastpostby><spout:postdate>6/3/2007 4:45:57 PM</spout:postdate><spout:body>Considering the X-Files ran for so long on Fox, it's probably odd that a sci-fi fan like me saw only a handful of episodes when they first aired. I caught a bunch of re-runs on cable during the college years, but now... BLOCKBUSTER ONLINE!!! DVD sets from the beginning! My wife and I are midway through Season 4 -- lovin it. Body: Hi, all, thanks for the invite. I like the looks of this group. It's the perfect mixture of movie talk and confessional. So here's my confession: I don't like anime. Or more accurately, I never got into it. I tried to a couple times, but it never quite clicked with me.I was discussing this with a fellow Spout-friend, who pointed me in the direction of Cowboy Bebop: The Movie, which I watched two weekends ago and thoroughly enjoyed. Good mix of music, mythological archetypes, trendy haircuts, and pop philosophizing. I'm interested now to check out the series. Among anime fans, this is Citizen Kane, which of course was news to me. But just in case anyone else is anime-curious, that one worked for me as a good place to start.
