Body: Based on JimBell's comments in another discussion I thought it would be cool to invite everyone to post a sort of profile about themselves regarding the movies they like and how they look at movies. I am still working on mine, and will hopefully post it soon, but this may take a bit of time and thought. Here is a rough template for sections that you may want to include in your profile if other peopel want to post one Your top 25 favorite movies of all time Some of your favorite directors Some of your favorite actors / screenwriters / cinematographers / or other filmmakers The best movie you've seen this year, and why Describe your reviewing style What are the fundamental qualities that you appreciate in a film
Body: While I was going through the films that premiered at Sundance I noticed a number of documentaries that really caught my attention. Here are the lists: Spectrum 2009: Documentary Spotlight World Cinema Documentary Competition 2009 U.S. Documentary Competition 2009 I wanted to know what everyone's top 5 picks would be out of all of these. I know you haven't watched them yet, but I would encourage you to read the synopsis (If we don't have one check sundance's site), and to watch the trailer if there is one. The films you pick would be ones you want to see, and perhaps think could win awards of some kind. Thanks, Ryan
Body: I got an amusing message from a new member. They're making a CIA-themed training video, and searching for specific scenes they could use to communicate the ideas below. At first this reminded me of when my sisters asked me for help on their homework, and then I thought...it is, it's just like when my sisters asked me for help on their homework. But then I thought, I might be able to help this person make an un-boring corporate video! So here's what I came up with for these concepts. Are there any scenes you can think of? Plan strategically -- Utilize technology effectively -- Doesn't Mission Impossible I have an extended sequence where Tom Cruise uses all kinds of tools, ends up hanging from a wire, and steals a computer chip or something? Drive performance -- Accountability & Dependability -- For a counter-example, how about any of the scenes in Burn After Reading where an agent gives reports to J.K. Simmons? Communicate effectively -- Develop people -- I'm guessing this has to do with taking some time to guide or mentor a younger person. Are there any scenes like this between Sean Connery and his right hand man in Hunt for Red October? Lead strategically -- I'm thinking of the scene in Bourne Ultimatum where Matt Damon is helping the reporter (Paddy Considine) stay unseen by CIA agents. PS -- the person listed the kind of movies they had in mind: The Recruit, Mission Impossible 1-3, The Bourne Identity/Supremacy/Ultimatum, Enemy of the State, The Hunt for Red October, Clear and Present Danger, Patriot Games.
Body: So, every week at Spout we watch a movie and discuss it. Sounds fun, no? Well, it is. However, selecting the movie every week is not without it's challenges and as the lucky person who fills up our queue, I feel a lot of pressure to meet several requirements that often seem conflicting. 1) The movie needs to be one which we would not normally watch. The point is to be stretched outside of our movie comfort zone. 2) If you pick a really tough movie that ends in a really uncomfortable way every week, people will stop coming to watch. 3) There is a wide spectrum of movie preferences/tolerances present at Spout. We aren't all the movie freaks that you would expect. Many of us consider ourselves to be fairly average in our movie knowledge and preferences. Often, watching something with subtitles can seem like a challenge. 4) It needs to be short. We can't spend more then 2 hours on a movie out of our work day. So yeah, we are looking for short/normal length movies that will stretch us, but won't make the average movie goer want to run and hide every week at movie time. I greatly anticipate your suggestions. the unpopular movie-picker, Christi
Body: Hey there, I was thinking of maybe switching up format a bit and starting a thread that's genre specific. I don't know about you all, but some times it's easier for me to just think of a genre that I am interested in rather than to try and follow a template for getting a recommendation. So, recently I have been most interested in historical drama, but every time I go to a auto-generating recommendation engine I seem to get a bunch of films I have already seen. I have a hard time believing that I have exhausted the Historical Drama library, so I thought I would ask you all for some of your favorites or if you know of any lesser-known movies that you wouldn't typically see in a rec. engine.
Body: I feel like I've recently re-discovered the noir genre. I just watched The Killing last night and I loved it. As with Fuller's Pickup on South Street. I had previously been a fan of Fritz Lang's older German movies, but now I've seen Fury and I need to see more of his American stuff. And after watching Touch of Evil, I can't understand why Citizen Kane is known as Orson Welle's best work.. I mean c'mon....!!! Charlton Heston just grows a mustache and presto!!! He's a Mexican. You can't beat that! Anyways what are some of the films I'm missing??
