Body: Have y'all seen this? http://www.paulkerensa.com/movietimeline/ Ok, so it's not quite Oscar worthy material, but this is the most history-oriented group I know, and I thought the Spout community at large should take a look. This timeline is history according to film - so if a film quoted something, real or imagined, that happened at some time, real or imagined or artistically/strategically dated, this timeline shows when it happened. It includes such "excellent" dates as when Genghis Khan was kidnapped by Bill and Ted or when Hill Valley, CA was established, or when Brian was crucified but presumably not resurrected (unlike his neighbor Jesus). It's really funny.
Body: I loved the appearances of Tina Fey and Steve Martin ("Don't fall in love with me"), of Natalie Portman and "Joaquin Phoenix," and the video with Seth Rogen and James Franco. I couldn't find decent clips of all of these moments, but here's Natalie and Joaquin: Moments like this made me realize how bored I was with everything else on the show! Around 11:30, my mounting boredom gelled into a 'buzzkill revelation' -- All of the Kodak Theater's millions of dollars of production value, and this broadcast to upwards of 50 million viewers, is all centered on some (admittedly talented) people saying almost nothing of value! I mean this in all seriousness: I think the Oscars ceremony would be far more intriguing if the ceremony were only photographed. Then when I'd see a picture of Hugh Jackman singing with Anne Hathaway, I'd wish I could've seen the whole event. As it is, I wish my friends and I had, instead of watching the Oscars, played Boggle.
Body: It's December! Guess what that means!!! Since Spout saw fit to make a banner for our group on the Groups page, I thought it was only fair to start our 2009 buzz thread and get the juices flowing. You know, one of our four major predictors, the Critics Choice Awards, has its nominations being announced tomorrow by the Broadcast Film Critics Association, followed closely by the Golden Globes and SAG. Keep up to date here on all of the lists and nominees as they get announced. Get ready to discuss the awards season. I have a feeling we're going to have a doozy this year... the SpoutBlog has already been hitting on some of the short list announcements and the subjects of great speculation, not the least of which include whether or not Heath Ledger will posthumously be nominated for any award for his Joker portrayal in The Dark Knight. Also - is Wall-E good enough to be nominated for Best Picture (I think Animated Feature is in the bag). Also, now that it's after Thanksgiving, we're seeing the awards season push of films. Any interest you this year? Let's live up to our hype and get to buzzing. After all, it's the most wonderful time of the year for us Oscar fans! :-)
Body: Just came across this page over on AFI's site... its their top 10 of 2008. AFI MOVIES OF THE YEAR-OFFICIAL SELECTIONS THE CURIOUS CASE OF BENJAMIN BUTTON THE DARK KNIGHT FROST/NIXON FROZEN RIVER GRAN TORINO IRON MAN MILK WALL•E WENDY AND LUCY THE WRESTLER Theres a few rather obvious selections on there but a few I find rather baffling. AFI offers no explanation/rationale for the selections but Ironman and The Curious Case of Benjamin Button? I saw Iron Man, and thought it was good, but not exactly what I would consider to be a truly "great" film. I haven't seen Benjamin Button, but its gotten mixed reviews at best and not what I would consider a runaway pick for a best of list. Any thoughts? Maybe a few titles that should have been on here but arent?
Body: Did you read it? http://blog.spout.com/2008/11/07/oscar-predictions-dark-knight-vs-rachel-getting-married/ Well, now it's hotlinked to the imdb, and people are weighing in. I post it to our beloved Oscars group because this is exactly the kind of discussion our little group could get into. I don't know this Dirty Harry person, but I find all of the ensuing comments to Karina's post quite interesting. And since I heart (<3) the Oscars, I find all of this canvasing for The Dark Knight and some of the earliest buzzed short listers very interesting indeed. Anyone want to weigh in here? Oscar Buzz season doesn't really start until post-Thanksgiving, since that's when holiday blockbusters and the studios' Oscar contender releases also inundate our local cineplexes. Be sure to watch for this year's thread.
Body: I don't know where else to start this particular discussion - I'm sure the Disney fan group would be appropriate, since Disney and Pixar dominate the list, but this is Rotten Tomatoes' compiled assemblage of the 50 highest ranked animated films on their site, which is a pretty good, balanced indicator, all told, between critical and popular reception. The list starts at the bottom with South Park's big screen offering and ends with...well, I'll just let you take a look-see. Sound off below on what you feel are the merits (or lack of) of the latest top something or other list! I'll check back later and offer my reactions then. http://www.rottentomatoes.com/guides/best_animated_films/south_park_bigger_longer_and_uncut/
Body: Greetings Oscarphiles and everyone else! Now that we're knee deep in hotter than hot weather and forced to hibernate where the air conditioning takes us, it's time to revisit the American Film Institute lists, our latest yardsticks to hold up against Oscar in terms of measuring movies. Plus, we're halfway through our Oscar-eligible year, which means more popcorn blockbusters and random comedies and less art. So, what better time to consider the place of the comedy as it relates to the Oscars? The new AFI's 100 Funniest Films list represents the third of AFI's 100 Years series. The list is being compiled and described. In the meantime, take a look and see if you agree with whether or not these are truly the funniest movies of the past 100 years. Are there any funnies the list missed? Do you agree with what's there?
