Body: So, I wrote an email to Sky Pilot and Porcupine the other day and they thought it was funny enough and discussion worthy enough that I should post it here....Beware...it is puh-retty long and doesn't have THAT much to do with movies....more just about internet culture and pop culture references in general. It sort of has to do with memes which can be defined as such:noun a cultural unit (an idea or value or pattern of behavior) that is passed from one person to another by non-genetic means (as by imitation); "memes are the cultural counterpart of genes" Basically, my understanding of a meme is an idea or characteristic that spreads through culture to create a sort of "universal" inside joke. Examples of this would be things like Napoleon Dynomite jokes or perhaps hitting a golf ball like Happy Gilmore...or maybe more specifically, calling a running golf ball swing a "happy gilmore" or saying, I'm going to "happy gilmore" this shot and having people know what you mean without really discussing that you have both seen the movie. What I have become interested in--and SkyPilot and Porcupine and lots other have become interested in as well--is the set of these memes that revolve around internet culture. Shoot! - this very sight is an example of an internet meme: blogging. I would love to hear what people think about all of this. The internet is a fascinating place. Also, you can feel free to make fun of me for my UTTER nerdliness.....I know....I know.Love, Matt P.S. DANG IT....i cant get the formatting to work....it has it all messed up and wierd looking....I will work on it later. sorry for now! P.P.S. Could not get the formatting to work after several tries....so I just did my best to re-write/update it for this site....it is the MONSTER post just below...
Body: I don'g get it. How do some actors end up playing roles in certain movies. You know what I am talking about. Like when Owen Wilson shows up in Behind Enemy Lines as a pilot...Sometimes these performances turn out ok and sometimes you just dont understand how an actor who was so good in a different movie could manage to be so bad in this one.Im gonna make a list of what I mean:John Cusak: This guy might be the king of this genre for me. I just dont get how he could be so brilliant in movies like High Fidelity and Say Anything but SO horrible in movies like Identity. Seriously...that movie is BAD.Owen Wilson: As mentioned before, this guy is similar but the opposite of John Cusak in that he has been the only redeeming part of MANY of the non-Wes Anderson movies that he has been in such as Behind Enemy Lines. Seriously...how does your career survive being in movies like You Me and Dupree and The Big Bounce? TERRIBLE!Ashton Kutcher: this guy seems like a tool to me. He is sorta funny, but only in a wierd jockish frat boy sort of way. Just the way that I dont want him to be. I know some people thought he was pretty funny in That 70's Show....but really....I was totally under the impression that he was just plain dumb....until I saw The Butterfly Effect. I dunno...maybe it was just LOW expectations...but he did a really good job. And that movie was moving...There are a few more that I can think of...but those are the three I think I should get started with...LEMME KNOW WHAT YOU THINK!!!Matt
