Biography
Dark-haired, impish-looking Joe Butterworth, the youngest of the three acting Butterworth kids, made an unforgettable juvenile nemesis to
Mary Pickford's feisty
Little Annie Rooney (1922). Earlier, Butterworth had played important roles in
Heroes of the Street (1923) and
Penrod and Sam ([1923] as Sam to
Ben Alexander's Penrod) but his subsequent films were low-budget potboilers. His family hailed from Lancashire in the U.K., and Joe Butterworth was the son of D.W. Griffith bit player Ernest Butterworth Sr. ~ Hans J. Wollstein, All Movie Guide
