Biography

Winton Hoch was an innovative cinematographer who was instrumental in the development of Technicolor's three-color system. The Iowa-born Hoch received his education at the California Institute of Technology then went on to spend 20 years with the Technicolor corporation as a color specialist. While working for them during the early '40s, he began moonlighting as a cinematographer. When WWII erupted, he joined the Navy. After the war, he continued to work as a director of photography and was noted for his exquisite work on the films of John Ford. For his photography of She Wore a Yellow Ribbon (1950), Hoch won an Oscar. Later he won Oscars for Joan of Arc (1948) and The Quiet Man (1952). Later he went on to film several successful television series, as well as other films. ~ Sandra Brennan, All Movie Guide
