Biography
Portuguese director João Mário Grilo made his feature-film debut with
Maria (1979), a film sponsored by the Instituto Portuguêse de Cinema. Before entering cinema, Grilo studied economics and sociology. A film buff, he participated in several film societies and was also a member of the Centro de Estudios Cinematográficos. ~ Sandra Brennan, All Movie Guide
