Biography

Helma Sanders-Brahms is an internationally acclaimed German filmmaker. Born Helma Sanders, she changed her name to Sanders-Brahams to keep from being confused with her colleague Helke Sander. Before becoming a director, Sanders-Brahms was a television announcer. She then became assistant director to Sergio Corbucci and Pier Paolo Pasolini. In 1969, she made her directorial debut with Angelika Urban, Verkaeuferin, Verlobt, which won two prizes at the Oberhausen film festival in 1970. In her large body of work, Sanders-Brahms has addressed a variety of social issues including her parents' involvement with the Nazis, mental illness, the brutalization of women, mother-daughter relationships, and labor issues. ~ Sandra Brennan, All Movie Guide
