Biography

Lewis S. Meltzer was 29 when he was hired as a screenwriter at Columbia in 1939. In an incredibly short space of time, Meltzer worked his way up from the "B" unit to such big-budgeters as Golden Boy (1939), The Lady in Question (1940), Texas (1941) and Once Upon a Time (1944). He made occasional side trips during the 1940s to such rival studios as Paramount, Fox, Universal and RKO. Throughout the 1950s, Meltzer continued to be associated with such major releases as Man With the Golden Gun (1955) Autumn Leaves (1956). Lewis S. Meltzer's last screenwriting efforts were a pair of films for producer Albert Zugsmith, High School Confidential (1958) and The Beat Generation (1959). ~ Hal Erickson, All Movie Guide
