"i think i might be the only person in the world who didn't care for this film. not that i thought it was particularly bad, just couldn't really care less. i think critics have failed to recognize that if the music isn't to your taste, there is little left for you. the directorial style is bland and the story isn't captivating. on top of not liking the music, i had trouble watching the performance of glen hansard. during the scene where we are constantly cutting between home videos of his ex, and shots of his completely overwrought tortured artist singing, i completely lost patience for the film. first i started to fast forward, but the song/scene went on for so long i eventually turned it off and went to bed early. went back a few days later to finish it, but couldn't keep myself from doing other things while i watched it, such as cleaning up my living room. also can't help but view this as little more than an advertisement for two musicians who are now tou ... "okay. here's what i came up with (in no particular order): Divine Horsemen: The Living Gods of Haiti - Maya Deren Cleo from 5 to 7 - Agnes VardaBeau Travail - Claire DenisToute Un Nuit - Chantal AckermanNear Dark - Kathryn Bigelow i remember being so excited, thinking that the third man was directed by a woman. it's depressing how hard it is for me to compose this list. to ask "top 5 films directed by a man" would for most people be interchangible with "top 5 films of all time". i doubt any of these would even end up on my top 20. Of course the ratio of men to women in the film industry is huge. that said, i have yet to see any lina wurtmuller (who i haven't seen mentioned in this thread yet either), deepha meta, or jane campion films, so perhaps i have not been living up to my responsibility as a feminist film buff...
