Viewing with a purpose
"First a word about "hate": for me I notice that the reason I hate a movie is usually because of the expectation I have going in (i.e., crital acclaim), as some have mentioned, coupled with the fact that I leave feeling that I just wasted my time and money--I hate that! Two movies come to mind: "Blue Velvet" (huh?), and "Lost in Translation" (was there any character in Murray's performance?)...oh, and I can see hating "Fargo" because of the shredder scene; I can see making the argument for it being gratuitous there. I thought it was a great movie. "

"Paul, if members alert you to possibly inappropriate material, then you and your mates wouldn't have to be "wasting energy hunting down content to remove"--how 'bout that?I know you aren't getting much of a sample size from this discussion, but I would bet that most members would agree that they wouldn't want to be researching "Mister Roberts" and find a tag that says "hanoijane"--no matter what one's politics or sense of humor is--it just doesn't make sense does it?Is there still a Spout "discussion" after 2 weeks? -out "

"Risselada wrote earlier: "As far as tags go, I am actually usually more annoyed by tags that indicate some blunt personal opinion of the film like "sucks" or "loved-it" or "not-funny" or "overrrated". It seems to me that people should use their personal lists for that kind of classficiation rather than tags."And that sentiment is one that rings true for me too. Personal lists, discussions, blogs etc. are places for personal opinions (like why I might avoid a movie merely because I had a bad personal encounter with one of the actors--silly and immature, yes; I'm working on it). And as far as I'm concerned, if someone wants to start a discussion about why they hate Jane Fonda, that's where "freedom of speech" gets to be honored; I would see the title of the discussion and decide whether to join or not.I would like the tags to be a quick resource for me when I'm trying to decide --out of thousands of movies--whether I might like to see a particular movie; or if I hav ... Worst Movie Ever
""...not only did I see no point to these uncomfortable scenes, I saw no point for this trash to be released...", writes blakngold, and I agree with this criteria; it's what i use also ("Millions of dollars (etc.) spent on this!?"). I submit "Blue Velvet" as a nominee for the top spot; again, not because what they did wasn't well done (as some say), but because of what was done. "
