The Incredible Shrinking Man
The Continuing Saga of the End ...
By

The Film Library
"One of my favorite sci-fi/horror films, and based on a great Richard Matheson novel, The Incredible Shrinking Man remake had the potential to be a pretty fun film, with the right creative team at the helm. Of course, notice I used the past tense in that statement. The Hollywood Reporter broke the news the other day that there's a new director looking at this project, and it's none other than Brett Ratner, and the plan is now to turn the film into a comedic vehicle for Eddie Murphy, who apparently has had enough of fat suits and is planning on taking the other direction. The only glimmer of hope is that Thomas Lennon and Robert Ben Garant, of Reno 911! and the awesome The State, are the latest writers to take a stab at the script. Unfortunately, their absurdist, edgy humor will almost certainly be whitewashed by the increasingly pedestrian Murphy.Really, there is nothing about this story that I'm happy about. "

"Well, that's a shame, because part of the reason I love this site is because I can usually trust the conversations to branch off into interesting tangents. There's a difference between argument and debate. I know for my part there was no anger or malice in any of my statements, and i was just taking part in the discussion. "

"In retrospect, Poultrygeist probably wasn't the best film to be eating a large meal at. But I couldn't help it; Bear Tooth has such good food. I can't sit through a movie there without scarfing down a pizza, or their Pesto Treats, or their steak and cheese nachos. If there isn't a law against going to the Bear Tooth without eating, there should be. But still, had I given it much thought, and considered that I was about to watch a Troma film, one directed by Lloyd Kaufman himself, I probably would have opted out of the Brewhouse Favorite pizza. Luckily food was delivered during the opening scene, which, as vile as it was, was still tolerable and well within expected Troma standards. However, a few minutes into the movie, when Michael Herz showed up and proceeded to disrobe while the audience got a way-too-personal view of his bathroom behavior, I pushed my pizza away, never to be touched again(actually not true, I had leftovers for lunch the next day).To be honest, T ... "I really enjoy the Saul Bass credit sequence for Bunny Lake Is Missing. Funnily enough, I watched this about 2 days before going to see The Orphanage, which used almost the exact same sequence. "

"I would just like to point, Gor, that Mercurial here might have just referred to you as a 'thing'. Ha Ha. Okay, childishness aside, I don't see how my blanket statement was any more disagreeable than Gor's blanket statement, but I'll try and defend my point. The cinematic output of any single genre is going to be so vast, so varied, that saying one shitty movie is better than an entire genre is going to unfairly dismiss some pretty decent films. I'll agree with Gor on this point, if given a choice between a craptastic monster movie I'm almost guaranteed to hate and your average romantic comedy, I'd choose the monster movie. But seriously, As Good As It Gets kicks ass. "

"/quote]...but it is STILL a Horror Movie and it is better than the best romantic comedy... So where does that leave us... I hate it because it is terrible and yet I still love it...[/quote] I have to say something here, because I seriously don't think it's fair to say Alone in the Dark is better than, say, It Happened One Night, or As Good As It Gets, or any Billy Wilder film. "Huh. It seems to me that you could take that statement, and make it a compliment. Look at it out of context, and imagine you're speaking about Stanley Kubrick or David Lynch. Not to defend Uwe Boll, but it seems to me taking a hands on approach to filmmaking is something we usually want directors to do more often. And as for that petition, I've decided not to sign it. I've never seen a Uwe Boll film. I hear their horrible, and I have no doubt they are, but I've just never felt like actively watching one. So, what does it matter to me if they suck? And even if I did subject myself to House of the Dead or Alone in the Dark, I don't think I'd want to sign the petition. I can always choose not to watch them. "

"Well, I'm usually pretty good at not screaming in theatres, so I can actually only think of one instance(although a few more have gotten to me at home). It was during The Others, which I was actually reminded of several times when watching The Orphanage(I also thought about Poltergeist a lot, does anyone else see the similarities?). The one true 'scream inducing' moment in The Others, when the kids are hiding in the closet. I had my feet up on the seat in front of me, and I actually screamed and recoiled. But the theatre was empty, with only my brother and a couple a few rows ahead of us, so my scream was wasted. "

"Here's how I view it; it WAS a horror movie, with scary music and shock scenes and gore. It was a shitty one, but it WAS a horror movie. The social issues were an added bonus, and I give the movie bonus points for at least trying to say something with a generic killer-croc flick. "

"I just watched this today, and I think my opinion might be slightly higher than yours. Slightly. It was a pretty stupid movie, I'll give you that, but it did have an interesting angle. It's not Hotel Rwanda or anything(not even Blood Diamond), but it does take on the not-dishonorable task of trying to shed some light on an area of the world that most people just ignore. The idea that Gustave was given the taste for human flesh because of all of the dead bodies being dumped in the river, or that the western world was completely uncaring until he killed a white woman. Primeval is one of those movies I like to use when I defend my horror fandom to people who assume horror equals trashy. Sure, Primeval is stupid, but you can look at the worst horror movie out there and more often than not you'll find an attempt to say something that is more meaningful than most will give it credit for. Also, Jones had the best line in the movie, when talking about how great it was to be in A ...
