Enemy of the State- Enjoyable. Likable performances from Smith and Hackman. Love the references sprinkled throughout to The Conversation. Interesting side notes (to me anyway) 1- written by David Marconi commercial radio invented by Guglielmo Marconi... coincidence? 2- Evil Reynolds born on September 11th wants to power through a bill that grants the NSA unlimited power to conduct surveillance on the populace.

Vantage Point- yawn. I did laugh out loud however when after the 15 minute car chase through city streets Super agent Quaid radios in that he needs the president picked up 700 yards from the square where the chase started. Were they really going around in circles the whole time?

Drillbit Taylor- I wonder which character Seth Rogen modeled on himself growing up?

Broken English- Depressing and wonderful although at times a little to "indie". I marvel at how Parker Posey can always be so watchable even in stuff like Josie and the Pussycats.

  • Movies? We don't need no stinkin' movies.

Was this review helpful? [Be the first to tell us!]

Les Formidables- An excellent Korean police action film. It stars Joong-hoon Park from the unforgettable and has to be seen to be believed Nowhere to Hide.

The Lavender Hill Mob- delightful and funny. The photography is also beautiful at times. Some of the shots reminded me of Listen to Britain.

Police Story- Jackie Chan is truly remarkable. Again.

The Walker- An interesting film by Paul Schrader. Slow and steady the mystery unfolding gently as befitting the southern dandy  at the centre of the mystery. A good turn by Mr. Harrelson.

Kung Fu Panda- Fun and enchanting. The animation is vivd and sucks the viewer in to this world. My one complaint would be Dustin Hoffman as Shifu. His voice lacked a certain something for the role. on the other hand James Hong was "Indeeed" a treat to hear as Po's father.

The Beast with a Billion Backs- This full length Futurama movie could have been better, while it was well served by the writing it was missing a little bit of zip, or so I thought.

Speed Racer- I saw this at the dollar theatre and was completely blown away. It really was a live action cartoon. I loved it. Visually inventive and kinetic capturing the spirit of the cartoon with out disparaging the simplicity and good hearted nature of the original.

Come Drink With Me- awesome and well worth the wait to see it. Thank you Dragon Dynasty.

Heroes of the East- Amazing Chinese vs. Japanese martial arts movie.

Definitely, maybe- A pretty good romantic comedy. Clever storytelling device, likable cast, all in all an enjoyable time.

The Spiderwick Chronicles- a really scary kids movie. If i had seen this when I was ten I might have wet'em. I know this is based on a series of books are there anymore coming?

  • Solstice Shakedown

Eastern Condors- Sammo is Awesome. Ditto for Yuen Biao.

The Fighting Fists of Shanghai Joe- Spaghetti version of Kung Fu.

Vexille- Ghost in the Machine did it better. Although the metal version of the Arrakis sandworm is kind of cool.

Marked for Death- one of 3 watchable (leaning to good) Seagal movies.

All About Eve- a much better version of SWF.

  • Weird....

Was this review helpful? [Be the first to tell us!]

Ghost Delivery- A Thai comedy that mixes Hellraiser, Ghost, The Sixth Sense, The Net and Ghostbuster (except instead of catching ghosts they deliver them-like pizza). Funny and strange for fans of Asian comedies only.

Manhattan- First time I had seen the whole thing and not just bits and pieces. Funny and unsettling (the 17 year old girlfriend is a little off putting seeing as how... well you know). Hemingway aside loved this movie. Funny and beautifully shot.

  • 2 Things...

Was this review helpful? [Be the first to tell us!]

1st- Commando- the eighties does it again. Black and white morals, indestructible supermen laying waste to vast armies of foes, and all in a brief little running time. Wonderful. This could use a sequel with Milano playing her character again all grown up and ready to whip ass in her father's legacy.

2nd- I see some people are taking the time to view this blog. I would like to hear/read your comments (positive or negative). Thanks for dropping by.

    The Grand- meh.

    Fool's Gold- bah!

The Robot vs. The Aztec Mummy (MST3K styles)- YAH!!

  • Blog Smash!

Vince Vaughn's Wild West Comedy Show- Some funny moments, but they are all on the stage.

Running Scared- This could be be my favorite Billy Crystal movie.

    The Great Escape- good everytime.

China 9, Liberty 37- love Monte Hellman and Warren Oates. Two Lane Blacktop, Cockfoghter, this- all good.

The Incredible Hulk- This is a saw-off with the Ang Lee Hulk. Both movies have things they do well and things that miss the mark. Maybe the third one will be just right?

Chichi Ariki- Ozu movies are always an enlightening experience. His films are so different from everything else I watch. I love the change.

  • What happened to my $12.50???

Was this review helpful? [Be the first to tell us!]

Road House- classic 80's garbage. The morals are off the charts here.

Inside Man- Love me some Lee. This film moves and breathes because of the camera work here and I dug all the little references to other films sprinkled throughout.

Topkapi- A pretty good little heist film by Jules Dassin. Recaptures some of the tension of Rififi and includes some fantastic wrestling scenes (Night and the City anyone?) at a Turkish fair. An excellent Sunday afternoon watch, Thanks again TCM.

Now the reason I've called you all here today....

The Happening-  For a quick capsule review see the title of this blog entry. My wife and I were looking forward to this movie as we are both M. Night fans (Yes we even liked Lady in the Water) We are aware there exists a limited return on the twist ending, but thought the visuals and semi surreal qualities of his stories were always compelling. This however was a big disappointment. We felt the film was lacking the tension and suspense of his other works. (Could be a SPOILER) The message of the film is way to heavy handed especially since everyone and their other has seen An Inconvenient  Truth. The film felt as flat as the books on the shelves of the model home.

  • Back so soon...

Was this review helpful? [Be the first to tell us!]

The Negotiator- Picked this up out of curiosity and was placated for the running time. A okay balance of action and drama. The movie had a good if underused supporting cast and I did not hate Spacey in it (thats been a rare occurrence lately). F. Gary Gray is very hit and miss but somehow this lands smack in the middle.

  • A Month Plus PT.2-Return of the Lame Blog Title

To pick up where I left off....

Heaven And Hell- A hybrid Kung Fu musical, legend and morality tale. Stars the gentlemen from the 5 Deadly Venoms

Sugar Hill- A Blaxploitation Zombie movie. Awesome. Thank you TCM!

Cloverfield- this was okay...I think?... the farther I get from watching it the less I seem to remember... or care.

The Orphanage-  moody, atmospheric and somehow sweet. Horror movies the way they should be in my opinion more creep less gore. It made my skin crawl at times although some of it felt familiar.

Son of Rambow- a sweet film about the childhood and the adolescent fantasies of young boys. Made me nostalgic for my own wasted youth playing "guns" in the river valley where I grew up. The film was bittersweet and the two young male leads were believable as well as enthusiastic. They seemed to really love making their movie as well as enjoy each others companionship.

Silent Running- Dern and Drones. I liked it but would have preferred a more nihilistic outlook and ending.

The Omega Man- Heston vs. The Family- goofy sci-fi fun with the most blatant Christ figure analogy ever thrown in for good measure.

National Treasure 2- the book of garbage.

Baby Mama- Fey and Poehler are smart and funny people, it makes me wish they had written this movie.

Forgetting Sarah Marshall- B- Funny but not that memorable. Vampire Opera-A+

Grand Theft Auto- Enjoyable movie with a "Hey that's the guy/girl from ..." cast. I prefer this movie to anything Howard has done recently that for sure.

The Karate Kid- My wife finally understands what "wax on, wax off" means. Love it every time.

The Andromeda Strain- Could have been one of the most boring films ever. Yet I found myself riveted to the screen. Good 70's sci-fi.

Diary of the Dead- certainly not the best of the bunch, but i still enjoy Romero anytime.

Over Her Dead Body- Someone needs to speak to Paul Rudd. This is no way to build a career. Make me understand why you choose films like this Mr. Rudd. It is getting harder and harder to sell my friends on just how funny you are when they have to sit through garbage like this.

Cronos- Twisted and fun. Love it everytime I see it.

Le Samourai- Cool and elegant French gangster film. Jazz music, Citroens, and a nearly mute protagonist. What's not to dig about this film.

A Clockwork Orange- Sat in on a film studies lab with a friend of mine. This is not a breakfast movie.

Logan's Run- much to long, and the "blaster" effects are horrendous. This is a movie I would watch a remake of.

Bloodrayne- why does anyone give this clown money to make movies. Apparently Boll spent all the money on a helicopter to show us the 75 different ways somebody can ride a horse across a field. the money thing must be some kind of real life Producers scheme. Its the only way his career makes sense.

Rashomon- Beautiful and restrained (even in the scenes with the medium). Truly a classic.

Near Dark- Kathryn Bigelow is on of my all time favorite directors. The way she subtly subverts genre conventions is a wonder to behold. Also Point Break is awesome.

Pee Wee's Big Adventure- Gold everytime. I still miss Phil Hartman. Probably my favorite Burton film.

Untraceable- uninspired, unimaginative, unbelievable,  unmemorable, unentertaining-is that a word? Because it fits this movie well. This cyber thriller had all the tension of Firewall and I do not mean that as a compliment.

At Land- an esoteric avant garde film by Maya Deren. Strangely beautiful and compelling. A silent black and white Jewel from the forties. Find it and watch it.

Street Kings- I can't imagine why this wasn't a bigger hit. (read this with a very sarcastic voice and you'll get what I'm saying.)

Jumper- see above. (although it was not as terrible a mess as it could have been)

Ghost Dog- The opening sequence of this film is one of the best at developing character I have every seen. Bravo.

The Ipcress File- This is a great spy movie starring Michael Caine. Unfortunately I now have to try and find the other Harry Palmer films.

Signs- Love it and am looking forward to The Happening this Friday. Although I wish he would direct something someone else wrote. It worked for Tarantino with Jackie Brown.

Inside Man- Clever and tight film making. The fantasy shootout sequences are awesome. Lee's camera work in the movie is compelling and reminded me a little of another great New York movie- After Hours.

I am now caught up on this list. But now I'm going to watch another movie. Blog you soon.

  • A month plus... Pt.1

Was this review helpful? [Be the first to tell us!]

In the last month I finished a degree, refinished the hardwood floors, and watched some movies.

    In no particular order:

Semi-Pro- this was entertaining and a million times funnier than Blades of Glory. This reminded me of why I loved Anchorman complete immersion in the character and a deluded sense of his own majesty and importance. The scene at the league meeting is gold.

Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull- A little disappointing, to much CGI and the ride in the fridge was a little much. I felt the films action scenes were a little to familiar.

The 36th Chamber of Shaolin- A classic. My wife has decided to begin to educate herself in the martial arts film genre. A great place to start her training with the ultimate training film.

The Golden Compass- Entertaining, I hope the sequels spend a little less time on exposition.

PTU- Love the To. He makes highly watch-able genre pieces that blend in story elements from some classic films. PTU seems like a cross between Heat and Stray Dog. Simon Yan is really compelling in the movie as the hard nosed officer that understands the streets.

Death at a Funeral- funny at times, sometimes a little overwrought and tired. Enjoyable Sunday brunch movie.

Ronin- A pretty dependable action movie. Reno is likable, the car chases are great, and it was De Niro's last good film before The Good Shepherd.

Flash Point- A okay story but the martial arts are fantastic. Donnie Yen has a lightning fast and furious style that needs to be seen to be believed.

The Strangers- Actually a fairly enjoyable throw back film scary but not grotesque and fascinated by dismemberment. Its all about tension and scares. Definitely a guilty pleasure, I was glad we didn't need to get into the psychology of the killers-you know bad childhood blah blah blah.

Search and Destroy- barely passable Vietnam comes back to haunt some vets in Niagara falls film.

The Glove- great exploitation film. Saxon is king of the voice over here. One of the best theme songs in the history of exploitation films.

Batman Begins- okay but can't wait until the Dark Knight.

Juno- still funny third time around.

The Hottie and the Nottie- payment for my sins I watch movies like these so the customers at the store don't have to. They just need to ask "Is this funny?" and I can honestly say it is total s**t.

The Wind that Shakes the Barley- great movie, subtle and restrained while at the same time presenting a large historical event. Very brief almost to short however it does away with any extraneous information.

The other 25 movies will be in PT. II

  • I'm just a movie boy...

Was this review helpful? [Be the first to tell us!]

Thief....CAAAAAAN! Mann is fantastic at these total macho movies. Love it.

Calvaire-WTF???The ultimate in european hillbilly films. Just when you thought it was weird the film takes another turn for the worst. A combination the Hills Have Eyes, 2000 maniacs, Deliverance, Misery and I don't know what.

PS. I know what now..... Equus.

Legend of the Black Scorpion- Pretty but dull.

Boogie Nights-I'm a bright shining star.

  • Back So Soon?

Was this review helpful? [Be the first to tell us!]

Alien vs. Hunter- WTF? How could anyone involved think this was a good idea? Please, stop with the rip-offs of terrible films why can't anyone steal a great idea? (see Alien Invasion: Arizona and Alien 3000)

Mr. Magorium's Wonder Emporium- If I ever have kids they won't be seeing this.

Band of Outsiders-fun and clever, really enjoyable.

Paris When it Sizzles- William Holden is terrific-rapidly becoming a huge fan of his work. But what to watch next? A clever film that really has a lot of in jokes and film references. I probably missed a ton of them so I will have to watch this again. Love the Tony Curtis performance.

Just a quick note- Thanks TCM!

  • Since we last spoke.....

Was this review helpful? [Be the first to tell us!]

Alien vs. Predator: Requiem- So dark you can't see what's happening...proabably a good thing. What's the big deal if it is a Predalien... the Predator uses weapons for hunting the only difference it seemed to make was to give the Alien dreads and a different mouth. Quick question....Why when the Alien lays its eggs in humans the little chest poppers never look like half people? Why does it change now? Who cares? Also let's edit everything so fast you actually can't see the fights--- Great Idea! That's sure to wow the audience. I'm glad I work in a video store so I never get stung paying for stuff like this.

Sweeny Todd- BOOORING! What the hell is all the fuss about. Sure the sets and design are kind of cool but is that enough?

The Getaway- McQueen/MacGraw not Baldwin/Basinger. Awesome.

    Rollerball- Caan not Cool J.

Scanners- Had not seen this since I was 12- Louis Del Grande rocks! Watch for him in reruns of Seeing Things.

Touching the Void- Been there Taught that.

    Next-that's what I said!

    I am finished.

  • Meanwhile back at the ranch...

Was this review helpful? [Be the first to tell us!]

Dude, Where's My Car?-why would I watch this again-exhaustion,dehydration,delirium? None of these reasons is a good enough excuse. I need to be punished, or have I been by watching this 'movie'?

The Warriors- still fantastic but I don't care for the new transitions on the special edition DVD. One of the reasons I likes this so much was as strange as gangs like the Baseball Furies are I kinda bought into the reality of the story and setting. The comicbook panels took me out of the film everytime.

License to Wed- if this movie has almost every member of "The Office" in why does it suck so much? Oh, that's right it has the RV version of Robin Williams and not the One Hour Photo Robin Williams.

I Could Never Be Your Woman- What can I say we are a Paul Rudd family and watch everything he is in-despite our instincts to avoid films like this. Although it's not without its charms.

Once Upon A Time In America-sprawling vast epic and the opening with the phone ringing is unbeliveable-Leone does it again.

  • Good Friday?

Was this review helpful? [Be the first to tell us!]

The Bank Job-could have...pardon me SHOULD have been at least a half hour shorter, then at least it might have had some tension.

Pistol Whipped-poor Seagal the movies just keep getting worse, on the plus side he can obviously afford to eat.

The Shepherd-ditto for good old JCVD.

Southland Tales- uhm...uhhh...I think I need to watch this again.

  • Wife's out of town Pt.2 + It's been a long time since I wrote a blog...

Was this review helpful? [Be the first to tell us!]

Sometimes life gets in the way of the fun of writing a blog. But that doesn't stop me from keeping a list.

In order since the last entry...

    Gone Baby, Gone

    The Nines

    The Ten

    Be Kind, Rewind

The Ten (It's just funny as hell, though not for everyone)

    Kill Bill

    Death Proof

    The Legendary Weapons of China

I Now Pronounce You, Chuck and Larry (This sucked big time!)

    Revenge of the Nerds

    Bee Movie

    The Transporter

    Grandma's Boy

    Touching the Void

  • Wife's out a Town Pt.1

Was this review helpful? [Be the first to tell us!]

Chaos- Snipes, Statham and Phillippe!  How can it go wrong? Well, in almost every way since you asked. Starting with the end and working backwards we can begin to dissect the problem. The end is a blatant rip off of The Thomas Crown Affair (The good one with McQueen) smashed-up with The Silence of the Lambs. The twists are obvious and as previously alluded to-derivative-Inside Man anyone?. No wonder it went straight to video.

    Yo-Yo Girl Cop- pass.

Closure- Gillian Anderson and Danny Dyer in a bad British revenge thriller- stick with Straw Dogs or Dead Man's Shoes .

The Mechanic-Charles Bronson as a cold methodical assassin who mentors a new young killer (Jan-Michael Vincent). Sweet 70's action-y filck which according to the trailer on the DVD was also known as The Killer of Killers

    Pt. 2 tonight after work.

  • Friday to Monday (8th -12th)

Was this review helpful? [Be the first to tell us!]

Rambo- some of the most laughable dialogue ever. As well as some of the bloodiest action ever on the Hollywood big screen.

Airplane- still laughing after all these years. Wife's first watch-she enjoyed it.

Robin-B-Hood- Jackie Chan's latest, not that special. I prefer a New Police Story.

    We Own the Night- meh.

Legendary Weapons of China- tremendous Shaw Brothers classic kung fu-    Fantastic!!!

King of Kong- Loved it. fantastic "characters", very compelling viewing even though I hate Donkey Kong.

The Lookout- what a tremendous film the performances by Daniels and Gordon-Levitt were compelling and convincing.

  • Sunday,Sunday...so good to me.

Was this review helpful? [Be the first to tell us!]

2001- Holy Moley that's a hell of film, the ending is still a wow!

Death Sentence- terrible another movie about revenge from the states surprise surprise! When the first kid is killed by Kevin Bacon and his work buddy says "there is justice" I almost turned it off.

Blue Harvest- funny but not hilarious

  • The Week that Was

Was this review helpful? [Be the first to tell us!]

Escape from L.A.- what were they thinking?

The Verdict- terrific, one of my favorite Paul Newman films ever.

Michael Clayton- really interesting drama, mightr have liked a little more tension  seemed to be a tad inert.

Air Force One- one of the worst action movies I have ever seen! GET OFF MY PLANE!- BOOOO!

  • Sunday/Monday- the B-day continues

Was this review helpful? [Be the first to tell us!]

Timecop- nowhere as good the second time. A, uh, surprising roll for Ferris' girlfriend.

Wet Hot American Summer- some really funny moments joined by awkward pauses and  shuffling feet- just like adolescence.

All The President's Men- Can't believe I waited so long to see this. Excellent.

Dead Man's Shoes- After seeing This is England I think I expected more. A strange and stark piece that deserves further thought.

    I am finished.

  • Happy Birthday?

Was this review helpful? [Be the first to tell us!]

There Will Be Blood-WOW! this was a powerful and compelling film  that could easily work as a silent film. Daniel Day Lewis is tremendous again.

Magnolia- When we got home from the theatre and pub we were inspired to re-watch this film. Definitely one of the heavier double bills i've experienced.

    I am finished.

  • Sunday the 13th... scary?

Was this review helpful? [Be the first to tell us!]

The Apartment- Billy Wilder is quickly becoming one of my favorite directors. Watching this a second time really drove home how good it is.

  • Saturday's alright for...

Was this review helpful? [Be the first to tell us!]

...cuttin heads listening to Queen. Highlander- loved it once again. The reason for watching was to see the Kurgan in a different role than in Carinvale where he plays a scary man of God.

Eagle vs. Shark - Funny and quirky although the immediate comparison is Napolean Dynamite but with more swearing and sex.

  • The bad thing about education is...

Was this review helpful? [Be the first to tell us!]

That it really eats into my movie watching time. Last night the wife and I watched two movies. The pair really make you think about how broad a term "movie" is, because it can contain so many variants and examples of art and S**T at the same time.

Good Luck Chuck- the worst thing I've seen in a while it makes me truly embarrassed  that a few of its scenes were shot in my town. I hope the crew and extras' cheques cleared. Mark Kermode was right. I could feel my soul being eaten from the inside. This movie is so bad that it made the recent Jessica Simpson movie we watched seem actually funny in retrospect.

Sunshine- This was great I'm sorry it wasn't more successful. All Sci-fi fans everywhere should embrace this amazing piece of work. Breathtaking, atmospheric, and romantic all at once I really regret not seeing this on a big screen. It came and went from Edmonton before you could blink. A real shame.

  • ONce is not enough

Was this review helpful? [Be the first to tell us!]

Once-this is a great film, truly enjoyable, brisk, and well shot. I totally bought the relationship between the leads and was swept up by the songs. I will watch this again (soon!).

War-good but nothing special. Editing equals action instead of us getting to watch Li in unbroken takes we need all the MTV style convincing that something is really happening. If someone like Johnnie To had directed this film we would have had something really special on our hands. Unfortuneately we got this instead.

  • Skidoo!!!

Was this review helpful? [Be the first to tell us!]

Atonement- good, but not great so I'm sure it will win Oscars.

Mr. Brooks- Potentially could have been great, but it was confused and seemed to be the Frankenstein of three or four ideas stitched  together to create a shambling, tattered film.

Skidoo- this is a what the ?!? type of movie with everyone in it and clearly made by someone (Otto Preminger) who did not have a clue about the "counter culture". Jackie Gleason on LSD + Carol Channing singing the  eponymous song + Hippies + the mob headed by Groucho = I need to see this glourious mess again!

  • Happy New Year!

Was this review helpful? [Be the first to tell us!]

Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix - The best of the ones I've seen some of the effects in the climatic battle are really effective and make the villains truly sinister.

Shoot 'em Up- A complete disappointment excluding one or two stunts and set pieces.

  • Friday Forrester

Was this review helpful? [Be the first to tell us!]

    Superfly

    Black  Caesar

    Hell up in Harlem

    and tomorrow the honeymoon.

  • Arias and Tic Tacs

Was this review helpful? [Be the first to tell us!]

The Kingdom (2007)- A well made if troublesome film (ideologically) for me. I enjoyed this a great deal more than I expected to.

Juno- Just as good the second time around. Still funny and endearing. The first time was at Telluride this time a sneak peek at the Princess Theatre. Two free T-shirts and the best popcorn in town, what a class presentation.

Opera- Argento's tracking and POV shots in this are something to behold, an audacious film.

  • Wednesday Night Heroes

Was this review helpful? [Be the first to tell us!]

The Brothers Solomon- Bob Odenkirk continues to make strange and offbeat little films that have laughs where they shouldn't.

Bloodfist- Don "the Dragon" Wilson's first starring role, I certainly hope the fight choreography  improves by the time I get to Bloodfist VIII.

Z - This is by far the best film I've watched this week.

  • Tuesday Night

Was this review helpful? [Be the first to tell us!]

The Heartbreak Kid- disappointing and a huge waste of Rob Corddry and is it just me or was every moment Jerry Stiller on screen uncomfortable and excruciating?

Halloween (2007)- Tyler Mane is quite imposing as Michael Myers, but the set up takes to long. I actually enjoyed it, much to my surprise.

  • Christmas Break-Let the films begin (Monday/Tuesday)

Was this review helpful? [Be the first to tell us!]

A Bloody Aria- A violent, strange and bleak Korean film. A little to harsh and nihilistic for me.

Blonde Ambition- This shows signs of life whenever the black-hole of talent that is Jessica Simpson is not on screen.

Balls of Fury- Only a few laughs scattered throughout, but am I surprised?

Resident Evil: Extinction- Milla is still attractive and these films still disappoint. Paul W.S. Anderson is almost as big a blight as Schumacher.

Rush Hour 3- A complete disappointment, even Jackie Chan's action sequences are devoid of entertainment/excitement.

Missionary Man- Dolph Lundgren wrote and directed this film. Is there anything he can't do? Oh yeah, he can't act, write, direct, entertain (obvious exceptions -Rocky IV & Masters of the Universe).
