Re: Telling A Story Backwards
By billymcbrie in PulpFiction1975
"Okay here goes. Apologies for any errors."It can be interesting to draw up a plot segmentation of a film as Bordwell and Thomson (Film Art, 5th ed) have with Citizen Kane. I have attempeted a very simple pot segmentation of Pulp Fiction, and attempted to apply the concepts of narrative construction. The plot runs thus: Pulp Fiction 1 - Pumkin and HoneybunnyT - Title Sequence2- Vincent and Jules a)Walk and Talk b)Collect package and kill3 - Vincent Vega and Marsellus Wallace's Wife a)Marcellus Talks to Butch b)Vincentpicks up his drugs at Lance's House c)Vincent Meets Mia d)Jackrabbit Slims e)Mia OD's f)Lance helps to save Mia 4 - The Gold Watch a) Flashback to Butch meeting Capt. Kooms b)Butch meets Esmarelda c) Butch and Fabienne d) Butch retrieves watch and kills Vincent e)Butch fights with Marsellus f)Butch and Marcellus held by Maynard and Zed. They Escape g) Butch and Fabienne ride off to their future5 - The Bonnie S ... " [More]

Re: What If Hitchcock Could Use ...
By billymcbrie in PulpFiction1975
"I think Hitchcock would be a director who would not over-use CGI, if at all. He was a geek as far as film goes, using tricks and sfx, like the one-camera gimmick for Rope, but it was always the story that led him. It was he who said "You need three thing to make a good film: a good script, a good script, a good script." (some directors seem to have misread this as meaning you have to rewrite the script entirely at least three times.). I think Hitchcock would be using some CGI, and definitely using digital cameras, but only as an route to tell the story better, not just because he could. I don't think he'd be shoving a CGI dinosaur in the middle of a film, but definitely to make a stunt look more real, or to remove wires and shodows etc. " [More]

"I think the key to what Jules did next is foreshadowed in Pulp Fiction. "I'm going to walk the earth," he says, "Like Caine in Kung Fu."The way I see it, it would be exactly like Kung Fu, the TV show. Every week, Jules strolls into a new town, makes an aquaintance, sees a problem, and no matter how hard he tries to sort it out peacefully, he ends up spouting some scripture and popping a cap in their ass. Now that's something I'd pay to see. " [More]

"I agree. When it's done well, it's done really well, but sometimes you see the words 'pulp-fiction-esque' on the back of the dvd and sigh. It's so easy to lose an audience this way. I have to say, as much as I loved Nolan's Memento, I found the messed up structure of his recent Batman movie hard to swallow. I liked the movie, but what was the point in chopping up the story with flashbacks of his training in Nepal (or somewhere)?I don't think you can beat a good, classic structure to a film, and the expert writers know how to apply this. In Eternal Sunshine, while you see the relationship between Joel and Clem unfold back-to-front, the film actually has a very clear, straightforward narrative structure. It's hard enough to pull that off in a regular movie (just look at the amount of flops around nowadays), so why first time directors try and go for a messed up time line unless it is integral to the polt, I'll never know. "A wonderfully subtle, beautiful european film about obsession and love. Notable for its haunting soundtrack, iconic poster, and the are-they, aren't they opening scene (where Beatrice Dalle and real-life boyf Jean-Hughes Anglade make love on the porch), this was a film I saw at the tender age of 14, and shaped the way I thought about relationships. The landscape is fantastically evocative, and the film's reputation as a sex film is insulting to the sensitive and well-handled subject matter. Franch classic. " [More]

"'Stevenage is great,' says protagonist Phil. 'If you like concrete.'This film is a low budget, character based drama with heart and balls. It grabs you from the beginning with schoolboy Phil seeing his mother commit suicide, and doesn't let go. The film weaves the stories of the four main boys together nicely, showing their lives come together or destruct in the long summer following their final school exams. UK residents will appreciate the dry, subtle humour which makes no apologies for its Britishness, and the acting is top notch. Recommended highly if you want to see young stars such as John Simm, Andrew Lincoln and Marc Warren earn their equity cards. A kick-ass soundtrack full of hits by the Stone Roses, Velvet Underground and more tops off this superbly directed movie. " [More]

"Notable for its moronically catchy theme song, and the brilliant-if-you're-eight-year s-old stop motion climax, this is a movie I watched again and again in my youth, probably only for the reason that I grew up a wet and boring seaside town and videos were the only thing to do besides graffitti-ing and twoc-ing. Fantastically fun (although I last saw it twenty years ago, so probably horribly eighties and clunky by now). " [More]

"Hi, new here.I did some film studies at uni, and did a whole essay on the messed up time structures in movies. I even plotted out every scene in Pulp Fiction and then straightened it out to show how the story actually progresses. Took me about four hours, lots of notes on the screenplay, and a gallon of tea. I'll see if I can track it down, and post it up. " [More]
