Re:Burn After Reading
By Jymkata in FRESH
"[quote user="Risselada"] Ok, so you quoted me, but didn't say anything.... *SPOILERS* What do people think about them killing off Brad Pitt's character somewhat early on? I feel like it was a great attack on our expectations, and by killing one of the most likable characters played by one of Hollywood's biggest stars, I found them to be really kind of taking it out against Hollywood convention. There were some people in the audience who could not stop laughing, but others who just couldn't allow their preconceptions to be shattered. There was one guy who couldn't stop laughing and you could hear his girlfriend hitting him and saying out loud "why are you laughing??" It made everyone else in the theatre laugh. [/quote] There was uncomfortable laughing at my theater (after the initial whoas and OMGs) as well - it was a violent scene. There were a couple typical Coen Brothers "wood chipper" moments that made my sqeamish wife cover her face (The Malkovitch hatchet scene was prett ... " [More]
Re:Top 5 Films of the 90s
By Jymkata in Forever Young
"1. Goodfellas - barely gets in as a 90's movie (1990), but it is my favorite Scorsese. Although I like Dances With Wolves, it leaves a bitter taste in my mouth that it won over Goodfellas at the Oscars. Iconic movie. 2. L.A. Confidential - doesn't feel like a 90's movie because of the time period detail, but I love this film so much that I had a hard time deciding on making it 1 or 2. I will love Russell Crowe forever for his portrayal of Bud White. This Oscar loss hurt more than Goodfellas and I will always be cynical about the Academy for rewarding Titanic over this. 3. The Player - OK, this one definitely feels like and looks like a 90's movie, but it will never feel dated to me. Like most of Altman's films it is a capsule of a specific time and place. This is the ultimate film lover's treasure hunt - references galore! 4. Hard-Boiled - I will throw in an international film with this John Woo action pic. and it's a brilliant one. I prefer this over Woo's The Killer, but they are ... " [More]

"Yes, I have seen Riki-Oh and yes it is definitely over the top. It is also very stupid even in a low budget context. I think Cronenberg would appreciate the various exploding body parts. [quote user="Risselada"] Has anyone seen Riki-Oh? I've heard about it and seen a few clips, and it sounds like it might fit in here if it lives up to it's reputation. [/quote] " [More]
Re:Andromeda Strain
By Jymkata in DOOMSDAY
"[quote user="lopezdash"] So what'd you guys think about A&E's 2-part mini-series Andromeda Strain? [/quote] I guess I'm one of the few that saw it in it's originial broadcast. I watched it based on the recommendation from TV Guide's Matt Roush, who's opinion I greatly respect regarding everything on the small screen. However, I don't really know why Roush recommended this one (I'm guessing it's because it is a semi-return to "TV movie of the week" miniseries of the 70's and 80's. I was never a big fan of the original - I fell asleep the first few times I tried to watch it (and I do NOT fall asleep during movies). I guess if you love these biological nightmare stories and all the dry medical debates that go with them then you will like this and Outbreak. I thought this version was overlong and miscast. Sitcom actors like Christa Miller and Eric McCormack really struggled to bring any kind of serious emotion to their line readings, and I tried to like Ricky Schroeder, but he didn ... " [More]
Re:Scriptless

"[quote user="tokyorama"] Hi, I'm trying to find films specifically by directors who sometimes shoot without using conventional scripts like Hong Sang-soo, who I've read likes to shoot from a detailed treatment.Apichatpong Weerasethakul's films (I think) and some of Wong Kar-Wai's stuff are also examples of the types of films I'm looking for. Any suggestions would be extremely helpful. Thanks. [/quote] Much of John Cassavetes' ouvre is highly improvised. I think he started films with a rough shooting script, but he insisted on his talented casts producing a more natural dialogue. Opening Night and Faces are just two of the more blatant examples of this that I can think of. " [More]

"I really liked The Conformist but I can see where you're coming from. I just have a thing for films with that particular backdrop.A few friends recommeded Children Of Heaven to me and for the life of me, I just couldn't really stand it. I thought it was dry and a little too strait forward in it's approach to story-telling. [/quote]I also liked The Conformist the best out of all my Bertolucci experiences. If you are a Sopranos fan you can see a lot of inspiration for Adriana's death from this movie. I always respect Bertolucci's eye for cinema but his characters are always too messed up for me - psychologically, emotionally, and especially sexually. He also doesn't seem to get that less is sometimes more. However, I will always respect him for his writing contribution to one of my favorite cinematic masterpieces - Once Upon a Time in The West. "I understand but I think it's a little crazy to pick on a big budget musical for it's lack of realism. Street gangs don't break into spontaneous song and dance?? Really??? That's like criticizing Seven Brides for Seven Brothers for its unrealistic portrayal of lumberjacks. You really have to consider genre conventions. " [More]

"I agree with your appreciation of Ushpizin - it's a fascinating look at an orthodox Hasidic couple and there is a lot of tension in the film once the "guests" arrive. I liked it. " [More]

"I just finished watching The Raid recorded on my dvr from TCM and I'm surprised at how unknown this great Civil War film is. It's a true story that works against usual Hollywood formulas and is beautifully shot by Lucien Ballard. If you don't know how great this cast is (in big and small roles) you just haven't seen enough older films. Recommended highly! " [More]

"I'm sure I'm missing a great one, but I have got to say I was blown away by last year's Gone Baby Gone. I am stunned that the actor that has consistently disappointed me since he became a leading man came up with such a solid film. I usually hate Clint Eastwood and Robert Redford's directed efforts and I respect their acting much more than Affleck's, but Ben Affleck may have found a true talent for directing. " [More]

"Was it No deposit, No Return with the great Don Knotts and the great Darren McGavin? I used to watch this when I was young mainly because my family only had Disney on vhs in the early days of home video. http://akas.imdb.com/title/tt0 074968/ " [More]
