Trivia: 80's Siblings
By MovieGuy in Movie Trivia
"Over in the "Grew up in the 80's" discussion group, a thread has started about coming of age and the movies which shaped our lives during that time period. It made me start thinking of all of the classic films I love which were released in the 80's, most of which I have movie posters hanging on my wall for. Which brings us to this question: Which two different sets of siblings appeared together in the 1984 film "Sixteen Candles"? (So we need four names). " [More]

"Ohhh The Karate Kid.... totally forgot about that one. Yes yes... another classic. Now there's another great question, you mentioned Elizabeth Shue and I'd agree... she was on the top of my list right alongside Ally Sheedy. So which 'movie crushes' did everyone else have in the 80's? " [More]

"I'd have to agree the essential coming of age pictures of the 80's were Sixteen Candles, The Breakfast Club, Say Anything, Better Off Dead, Real Genius, Wierd Science... But the 80's were much more than that. We saw the start of the "Blockbuster" with movies like Indy, Back to the Future, Empire, ET... and the start of the Spielberg era... Goonies, Gremlins, ET. I'd argue the 80's helped define movies of today more so than in the 40's - 60's.. maybe that's just me :) - Chris " [More]

Re: Am I off?

"LOL. Although I do really enjoy this movie, I believe the popularization of it comes from various scenes throughout the movie. I think as a movie in whole you might be right... it's not a master piece. But if you extract from that key lines, or scenes, this is probably what people use as reference that it is a good movie. I bet if you poll half the people who say they love Christmas Story, they'll be able to recite a few key scenes, but probably couldn't even tell you what some of the main plot lines are. - Chris " [More]

"Answer: The Jazz Singer Although there were many movies prior to The Jazz Singer dating all the way back to the late 1800's, it wasn't until The Jazz Singer in 1927 did we have fully syncrhonized sound. The Vitaphone process was actually used a year earlier on Don Juan, a silent film with a scored background. The Warner studio took Vitaphone a step forward by capturing not only music, but voice too, and sychronizing it to the film in Jazz Singer. As mentioned in this thread, Singin' in the Rain touched on many of the issues surrounding the implementation of sound in movies. Not only were microphones large and hard to hide, they often picked up the sounds of people on set and the film camera itself. " [More]

"You know it really boils down to how passionate you are about a specific movie, and then it goes into so many personality traits about what you were doing during the time you were watching the movie. I mean compare Back to the Future, Casablanca and When Harry Met Sally. LOL These are 3 of my all time favorite films. I could make an arguement of my own opinion that When Harry Met Sally is the greatest movie of all time. Why? Well I was in a great relationship at the time, I remember everything about the date. The theatre, the seats we sat in, what she was wearing, how we laughed, holding hands, after the movie walking through the theatre's lobby... all related back to the first time I saw the movie. Is it the best movie ever.. nah, but for that one night in time, it sure was. " [More]

"Since pippin mentioned silent films in her last post, I figured this would be a nice easy question to bring up. Q: What was the first full-length movie to use synchronized sound? " [More]
Re: Trivia: Shortest Best Picture
By MovieGuy in Movie Trivia
"Answer: Marty (1955) - Total running time: 91 min. Marty was also the first best picture winner to have been based on a TV program. The story came from the 1953 TV programmed called "Marty". Also on a side note, Sunrise (1927) was only 66 min. long, however it was not even nominated for Best Picture despite most critics today feeling it should have won. It did however receive an award for Artistic merit. Wings (1927) was the first Best Picture winner and was the only silent film to ever win an Academy Award, and runs 139 min. Nice job! " [More]
Remake: The Black Hole
By MovieGuy in Make This Movie
"Here's another classic which has great potential for a remake with today's CG effects. Please don't get this idea confused with the recent 2006 movie "The Black Hole" which is about a science experiment gone bad causing a black hole to open up over St. Louis *cough* (so bad I might have to watch it). The original Black Hole would be a great movie for an updated fresh look. Thoughts? " [More]
