    Barfly  (1987)

    Factotum  (2006)

Thats how many would perceive Charles Bukowski. Reduce his genius to drunk ramblings. This movie clearly shows how Charles lived and thought. Brilliantly put together with little interuptions of his poetry set to beautiful camera play. A no holds barred narrative by people who were close to him, telling how he touched their lives good and bad. If you don't know who Henry Charles Bukowski is, this is a pretty great introduction to the man. If you have a basic idea of him through the movies made about his writings, (eg. Barfly, Factotum) Check this out to see how far off Roarke and Dillon were. (which in my opinion, Dillon wins the contest of best Bukowski, although Roarke wasn't far away) If you hate Bukowski and think his stuff is garbage, I suggest you watch this anyway, maybe it will shed a different light towards your opinion. This coming from a bias fan. What can I say.

    Rocky Balboa  (2006)

I love Rocky. Was fairly disappointed with III and not terribly impressed with V, but overall I think it's a great series of films

I personally was disappointed with this movie, and am actually quite surprised so many people liked it. I figure it's because they feel forced to like it. Like Rocky Balboa is as American as apple pie and to not like the last installment would be blasphemy. I thought the focus was misplaced. His work out scenes were cut way too short, and not that I necessarily need to see him working out, but you really didn't grasp the hard work he put in. In 1 and 4, you can almost feel the pain he goes through to get ready.

I think they lost a lot of the realism at the end of the fight. Rocky walks away directly after the fight, shaking hands and smiling like he just won a dance competition. He's an old man who basically went blow for blow with the world champ who is half his age.

Every other movie he was a bag of cottage cheese at the end, but somehow he's as tough as steel and ready to go at the end of 10 rounds with someone half his age.  Maybe if it was supposed to be a quiet way to say, "Hey, I really could have smoked this fucking guy but because the retardation I suffer from fighting all my life made me think it was honorable to let the kid win by decision." It would have been better all around but it sure didn't come across that way, and I honestly don't think that was the intention. Scenes and main points flew by way too quickly. I would have thought Sly would have focused on the realism more, especially during the fight. Guess I was hoping for something similar to the original, when all I got was 21st century money hungry crap.  The death of Adrian is a touching aspect, but after a while I could smell the cheese. If they had a few more scenes less dialogue, it would have been far more affecting.  There’s no reason this movie couldn't have stretched that extra 25 minutes to put a little more into the story.

There are several more aspects I could elaborate on, but I'll just condense what I feel for now.

Work a little less at the wanna-be artistic colorizing and Photoshop effects and focus more on the dramatic pain of living a broken life in a broken part of town.

Here is the list of vids I've gotten from Netflix since the start. I will tell you right off, I did not complete Aguirre.... yet. I do have full intention to.

Same goes for Fog Of War, although I did get through 3/4 or more of Fog.

Got too tired to continue Aguirre.

  • Great Dialogue

One of the best lines spoken by a real man.

    Peter Fonda as "Larry"

"You know what getting off to a bad start means to a guy like me? Not a god damned thing"

This movie is on my all-time top ten. If you've seen it, you will get an inclination as to what kind of films I really dig, but please don't judge me just on this. Judge me on my poor spelling and grammer, and all the other movies deemed as crap by the high intellectuals.

    The Departed  (2006)

I know you are probably sick of reading about The Departed, but I feel compelled to write a thing or two on this movie.

Being that I’ve only seen it once, I can’t tell you if I thought it was better than anything else Martin has made, like I said only one viewing so far. I can say it was good enough that it's stuck in my head and I have the desire to tell people what I think.

Very impressive film, gripping and intriguing and all the rest of those adjectives that builds up his way of mixing violence, attitude and a general bleak perception of society and life. I’m a big fan of MS and was actually fairly nervous to watch this movie. I’ve heard from several that this movie is better than Goodfellas, that it’s better than just about anything he’s made. That’s a tall order in my book, especially in comparison to Raging Bull, Taxi Driver, and Gangs Of New York… etc. I got over my fears and dove right into South Boston headfirst.

This movie is brilliantly acted, which should be no surprise. The surprise lies with Mark Whalburg for me. The king asshole of just about any film I’ve seen. He rips through people effortlessly and leaves you with a bad taste and the desire to punch him in the teeth. The kind of guy I’d want to just be around to see what flies out next. DiCaprio comes in a close second. He is definitely getting better with experience and age, and I would go so far as to believe that he might turn out to be one of the great actors of our time. Matt Damon follows close to DiCaprio, very compelling and believable, but for some reason, not as impressive as the fore mentioned. Almost like I expect Matt Damon to fill his role exactly as he did.

Some instances it felt like Nicholson was forcing his accent a little to hard. Don’t get me wrong, he plays one mean bastard, but again I almost expect that from a guy like Nicholson. His reasoning for taking the role was to escape the cloth of a comedic actor apparently; he certainly reproved his ability to be a royal bastard.

I was fairly shocked to hear the list of actors originally sought after for some of the major roles. Mel Gibson, Kate Winslet, Brad Pitt, Gerard McSorley, Dennis Leary. I think it may have been a completely different movie with any of these people. Maybe not Kate Winslet, the character she would have played wasn’t very detrimental to the story.

Only real complaint, like I’ve read before, is the music selection. I will go ahead and say I think the Stones are getting to be excessive. Aside from the obligatory Stones selections, the rest of the music felt a little misplaced. Almost like he got to the end of the movie and realized the only song he thought of during production was the Dropkick Murphys song and had to scramble to fill the void so he just ran to his car and found a mix CD in the glovey and threw it at the editor, “I’m sure this will work”.

Great movie overall, I can certainly give it 5 stars.

I will watch it several more times and it will be a pleasure to do so.

    I Stand Alone  (1998)

I was speaking with Risselada yesterday about this movie and we shared thoughts on this film. He was the one who originally recommended it to me. Now I really want to see all of Gasper Noe's works.

This movie does a great job at making one feel awkward. The character is identifiable, but you soon feel shame for relating to a coward like this. I did watch this movie with my 7 month pregnant wife, obviously not knowing what was in store, but reguardless of wether or not she was there, I still felt compelled to shut the movie off when the butcher performed an exterior abortion on his girlfriend. But I didn't shut it off. I had to see where this was going to lead. Quick talking, awkward music and surreal sound effects kept me interested.

Hearing the butcher rant about poverty and the way of life he was forced to live gave more substance to relate to, but Gasper Noe does a brilliant job of building up a coward. I found my self wanting him to just completely lash out and actually commit the violent acts he was raving about, but he didn't. It seems he's only aggressive towards the ones he knows full well he can beat.

I brought this across to Risselada yesterday, when the message comes across " you have 30 seconds..." along with all the screen flashes of "morality" I'm wondering if Gasper Noe is asking the audience and/or viewer if their personal morality allows them the ability to bear witness to the oncoming events, knowing full well something unpleasent is going to happen. I felt the 30 second warning, aside from that explination, was completely unwarranted. I wanted to watch the rest of the film without seeing that warring 3/4 of the way through, so I don't believe its schtick to keep the audience watching. I believe it's asking, How are your morals? Are you willing to witness something that may be even more shocking than the unforwarned brutality against a pregnant woman late in her term?
