"
Well I don't think the point of it was to make it be challenging, but it was more of a tutorial to introduce newbies to all of the features of Spout. Am I right or wrong?
Riss, You're perceptive. We did design it as a tutorial of sorts, to increase familiarity. I would like to see it become more trivia oriented though so that it's fun for movie lovers and also informative for new Spout users. " [More]

"

So, we launched a fun little scavenger hunt contest on Spout last week and I wanted to know what ya'll thought about it. Did you do it? Why or why not? If you did, what did you like? dislike? Etc. Any ideas for similar kinds of activities on Spout? You can play it here if you haven't seen it yet.
Yeah, I thought it was a lot of fun. I'm already obsessed with Spout and it gave me something more to do than scour movies, groups and the usual whatnot. Next time, make something a little more difficult. Since the majority of people on Spout have seen a significant amount of movies and spend a decent amount of time around them, go all out and create something scary hard that will be more challenging for us cinephiles.
I agree. At least I think it should be a little more focused and use actual movie trivia. " [More]

"

Since I typically tend to be quite remiss in my communication, to constrain someone to dependency on me to get involved in a group is irresponsible on my part and people should be absolutely free to come and go as they please. Besides, as Risselada pointed out, any other way besides open is just that - more work for the moderator and a rankling hindrance to potential members. Can't we all just get along? ;)
Jesus Christ, Robert! How was Christi able to get you to crawl out from under your rock? Was it her picture? (that certainly didn't hurt for me). (Here I go being all charming and shit again)...
Easy tiger... " [More]

What is this group for?
By csprague in Spout Moderators
"Good question. It might seem a little unorthodox, but the more work I do around here the more I realize that my opinion of what might be good for Spout is less important than what you guys (or ladies) actually think. You are the ones who use groups on a regular basis and so it's your opinion that really matters. I made this group because I want to know what you think, but also because I think that the best ideas for groups will ultimately come out of a communal discussion. How can we do this better? I want to know what you think. Plus, if you are here contributing your opinion and are currently running a group, I want to say thanks for that. more on that later.... " [More]

Membership styles, what works f ...
By csprague in Spout Moderators
"There are four different membership models for groups. Open membership, invitation only by owner, invitation only by member, or requested membership. Different people use different models, what works for you and why? Do you think the kind of membership model you select influences the kind of group you are going to have? " [More]

What works, What doesn't
By csprague in Spout Moderators
"I would like to hear what it is that you think makes some groups work and others not. Most of this is up to the involvement of users in groups and the subject that is be discussed, but are there any particular strategies that you have found work for your groups to keep people involved? Share what's worked for you...maybe it will help some one else. " [More]

Feedback - Groups
By csprague in Spout Moderators
"Hey, I am trying to round up some suggestions on ways to enhance our groups on Spout. I have gotten a lot of ideas from the general community, but as the people who have put the current groups to work for you, I am interested to hear your perspective. A few things I am curious about and would like your thoughts: -Adding people to groups -discussions -group creation process -lists -communication with group members let me know what you think! Re:Why I got into foreign films

"
Did you take that with Plantinga? That was one of my absolute favorite classes too. Even though I was the only person in the class who had actually hear of or seen more than half of the movies or people he talked about, that class still introduced me to so much.
Yeah, World Cinema. Oh Carl Plantinga:) I love that man. He was brilliant, and yet some how out of the loop. I actually had him for my first film course ever, it happened to be an interim that did a brief overview and examination of the hollywood system. I took it on a whim, thinking I would rather spend the month watching movies than reading books. It changed my major to Film Studies:) I guess good profs do that. or maybe just good films. " [More]

Re:Why I got into foreign films
By csprague in Friends of Foreign Flicks
"
An interesting observation, that I completely agree with, however do you not suspect that we, here, receive only a portion of the films made in various countries? I wonder if the bulk of films out of any country are not just as bad as those produced here are ( for instance I have seen plenty of Japanese, Korean, Chinese, 'Asian' that are simply as god-awful as anything from USA )??? Are we just getting the 'cream of the crop' and basing the judgement on that? No matter, walking into a video story, closing my eyes at the foreign section and picking, I cannot imagine not pulling out something worthwhile. I think what set my interest in motion was going through a 'humanities' class which part of it was watching 'great' films and seeing that english language films made up only 2 to 3 percent of the total and thinking hmmmm, 'what the hell am I missing?' A plus to the foreign films is seeing how the particular cultures are visible through the film; dynamics of f ... " [More]
The French Guy
By csprague in From Here To Awesome
"While I was making that list of From Here to Awesome films, I came across this really interesting film called The French Guy. I am both intrigued by this film and afraid to watch it. It seems like the kind of film where you think it is heading in one direction (but you never feel quite comfortable with it, like something is wrong but you can't put your finger on it) and then it goes in a completely different one. But, c'mon, an apartment wrapped in plastic and an accidental blood bath just sound too fascinating. I hope this gets to a point where they let us watch the full length feature. Whenever that would be. " [More]
