Local film action - festivals, ...
By

Bay Area Film Lovers
"All right, this one is especially important to me: Of course the local movie house is what it's all about, but what about what goes a little deeper - the people really into film, showing off cool stuff (new or old, popular or obscure), or maybe even into filmmaking itself? I took some classes at the Film Arts Foundation a million years ago before heading out of town to go to film school. Who else is around? Does anyone do outdoor movies during the summer? (That's one thing about Seattle I miss!) Interesting festivals around? (Seems like I keep hearing about them just after they've finished!)And what about passionate film-lovers who get together to support each other in running around and shooting stuff? I spent the last ten years or so with awesome groups of high school kids by running an after school filmmaking workshop. Now that I'm back here in town I'm excited to meet local film folks! What do you know about what's happening in the area? "

Best Bay Area Theaters?

"Okay, what I've seen so far has been limited to the East Bay. I like the Shattuck (Berkeley) for the decor of each of the different Auditoriums - Egyptian, etc. The California (Berkeley) is awesome for its marquee, and of course the Emeryville megaplexes are nice for a summer blockbuster. I'm looking forward to visiting the Speakeasy theaters (Oakland and El Cerrito) and am glad to have their programming - but do we have any genuine art/revival houses? What are the best theaters around here? For programming, atmosphere, unusual concessions goodies, etc. - help a guy out who's new back in town! "

Your Favorite Films

"Okay, help me out here. I need all the help I can get trying to create a group. What are your favorite movies? Stuff you love, stuff you love to hate, stuff you wish someone would make more of?I have a hard time finding a concise way to describe my own tastes: I like films with an imaginative element - the more wild the better (whether Eternal Sunshine or Earth vs. the Flying Saucers or Repo Man), but even a plain-jane drama will do it for me if it's got heart (Secrets and Lies, Sling Blade) - but the best ones combine both! (Amelie, It's a Wonderful Life). What about you? Are your tastes easy to categorize? Any guilty pleasures? "
