Personal statement: my preference for films are definitely towards those that have a languid pace and are beautifully framed. i'm also a filmmaker and just completed my first documentary about a vancouver-based indie rock band.

"The ending left me speechless. Everything was perfect in this film: acting, story, cinematography. Another Haneke masterpiece. I didn't find the pacing slow or tedious at all. "no country for old men is the coen brothers' best work.the following were achieved in their highest form:- the pacing of the story- the quietness of the film- the cinematic cinematography- amazing acting that didn't feel like acting- great dialogue- perfect editing- subtle and exact sound design for me, this was a perfect film. the ending blew me away. "this film is not for the majority of the population. it's depressing, there's very little elaboration on motives and decisions, and the characters aren't ones you would admire.but it's a fantastic film for all those same reasons. there are plenty of awkward scenes where you dread where it's going but at the same time, that dread is full of excitement. the acting is natural and believable. the frame looked awesome. i love that there's no exposition and that you don't really see what's coming next. also, the ending totally rocks the weird/awkward angle.i was devastated after watching it. "if the cinematography doesn't get you, then the surreal setting and plot will do it. from 20 helicopter "fly-by" shots of a rickety car driving in a heavenly pastoral setting to the stunning tracking shots, i was riveted by the film.however, it's not for everyone. this definitely falls in the "art house" category of films of which i, unabashedly, am a fan of. "i love hou hsiao-hsien films. they immerse me into a life that could have easily been mine. i feel the rhythms and pacing of this other life thru his cinematography, his long shots and an assumed intimacy.FLIGHT OF THE RED BALLOON is no different from this approach. the difference is that his native mandarin/haka is replaced with french.juliette binoche is amazing in (what i think) is her best role ever. best because i didn't notice juliette; i only noticed her character. just superb.i also really enjoyed the asian female character. she had a grace and ease that made me wish i was her willowy self. "I watched Edge of Heaven during the Vancouver International Film Festival a mere 2 weeks ago and I'm still remembering the gorgeous cinematography and strong characters.Everything was top notch in this film: acting, dialogue, cinematography, pacing, realism. I thought the strongest acting came from Hanna Schygulla who was a regular in Fassbinder's films.For me, this film is about forgiveness and when that theme hits you at the end of the film, it hits you hard. I literally felt fragile while leaving the theatre. Watch it and experience it. " [More]
