Sunday Morning Update...

"I've been out of touch because I've been very busy 'hosting' two video crews -- one from OnCommand (the hotel movie service) and another from Starz. It's always fascinating to see how these crews operate and what they think is important in the context of the Festival. Of course they're always interested in talking with the notable guests, like Penelope Cruz and Forest Whittaker, but they also want to take in the extraordinary scenery of Telluride and environs. As for movies, so far I've seen Severance, Venus, The Italian, Babel, and I got into the 'sneak preview' of Catch a Fire. I don't have time to talk about each film much, but here's my quick take:Severance is a hoot. I think of it as a blend of the BBC and US versions of The Office with Nightmare on Elm Street. It's a slasher comedy. To be candid, the realistic gore was pretty tough to watch at first, but once I got into the rhythm and found myself laughing as hard as I have in a very long time, I really enjoyed myself. Ye ... "The excitement really heats up, as the Film Festival opens today! In the media relations realm, we'll see all the registered reporters at the Press Desk -- well, the ones we didn't see already yesterday. The main street is closed off for a few blocks and serving tables and displays are set upl In the past, the food has been prepared in some of Telluride's best restaurants and it's spectacular; this is probably what will happen this year. It seems that each year it's a guessing game as to whether it's going to rain. The F ... " [More]

At the Telluride Film Festival

"I've been here in Telluride since Monday evening. This is my 8th or 9th TFF. I'm one of the 400 or so staff and volunteers who make this place work. My function is working at the Press Desk. Here we seek to manage relations with the many media folks who come here from around the world to cover this remarkable annual event. My wife works at the Festival, too, and each year we look forward to what she calls our 'working vacation' in the mountains. TFF is all about the love of film -- not stardom, distribution rights, and all the other crass commercial aspects of the industry. Telluride is a place where you'll see filmmakers walking around the streets with the rest of us common folk. One year, I rode the gondola up to Mountain Village with Angela Bassett. Another year, Stellan Skarsgard asked me if I hade a light as we both walked up the street to another screening. It's a fascinating place, for sure. There's nothing quite like the experience of walking out of a movie theater ... " [More]
