WTF, LOL?

"Well, it certainly took me long enough, but I finally got around to watching and reviewing "LOL," Joe Swanberg's movie about the effects of modern technology and relationships. I'd been hearing a lot about the Mumblecore genre, especially since the folks here at Spout have all but canonized Swanberg and his fellow Mumblecore artists as the patron saints of a new generation of filmmakers. I was curious to see how the movie lived up to all the hype. What I found was a movie that, while interesting, didn't really reveal its message until the last possible moment. In fact, up until the last fifteen minutes of the film, I was prepared to write off "LOL" as just another interesting but ultimately failed artistic experiment. The movie is about a group of friends (Swanberg, Kevin Bewersdorf and C. Mason Wells) each going through some relationship issues that have something to do with their addiction to online porn. These guys all seem perfectly normal and good otherwise, but when it comes ... " [More]

Why do we like horror movies (a ...
By indieabby88 in HORROR MOVIES 101
"Hey, guys! I'm in need of some help on a final essay for English, and since the topic is film-related, I thought who better to turn to than you all? The essay I'm writing is about fear, specifically the enjoyment people get out of it. I'm planning on writing about the success of the horror genre, and I'm trying to get some feedback on why it is people enjoy getting the crap scared out of them when they go to the movies. Any thoughts? I personally tend to go for the over-the-top camp factor (hence my love of movies like "Evil Dead"), or scary movies that try to make a statement, or do something unexpected. Most of all I like movies that reinforce the idea of my safety. I like zombie movies not only because of the ridiculous amounts of gore, or the basic questions of human nature, but because I'm 99% certain that I'm not going to have to worry about dealing with an attack of the undead anytime soon. But that's just me. Any other opinions on the matter? Anything you guys have to ad ... " [More]

Re:Why I got into foreign films
By indieabby88 in Friends of Foreign Flicks
"I totally agree! One of the biggest perks of foreign films for me is when I'm learning about a different culture while simultaneously being entertained. I always cite "To Live" and "Raise the Red Lantern," two movies I saw in my History of East Asia class, as prime examples. I wouldn't say that's specifically why I got into watching foreign movies, but it's one reason why I enjoy them. I watch foreign films for the same reason I watch any other movie: simply because it looks interesting. For me, a movie is a movie, no matter where it comes from, and I feel like what makes a movie appealing should go beyond whether or not you have to read subtitles. I can't stand it when someone refuses to watch a foreign film because they "don't like reading." For a while in high school and my first year in college, I got really into Spanish, Mexican and South American films. We watched a lot of spanish-language movies in my high school spanish class, like "The Sea Inside," "El Norte" and "The Offi ... " [More]

"Diane in "Shaun of the Dead." I'm artsy, and would probably end up doing some pretty desperate and retarded things in the face of a zombie attack. I dunno if I'd run into a crowd of zombies weilding my boyfriend's leg as a cudgel, but who knows. " [More]

Re:Uwe Boll
By indieabby88 in HORROR MOVIES 101
"Yeah, I'm basically of the opinion that Boll just feeds off attention, be it good or bad. I think he's an idiot, personally, and not really worth the time of day, so I choose to skip over his movies. "In the Name of the King" was a little tempting, since it looks like such a grade-a piece of flymeat that's just asking to be flayed ala Mystery Science Theater, but until that day comes, I'm just going to sit back and watch the fireworks, thanks. Depression=Sex (apparently)
By indieabby88 in Bloggish review blog
Was this review helpful? [Be the first to tell us!]
"The message of Lou Ye's film "Summer Palace" seems to be this: depressed people have sex. A lot. There are three major characters in Ye's film that have some obvious issues, and all of them waste no time hopping into bed with each other in an attempt to escape their apparent (and unexplained) pain. The director manages to make this situation somewhat interesting during the first half of the movie, but the last half drags miserably to a conclusion that doesn't seem like a neat wrap-up of the events we've witnessed, but a confession that Ye is just as bored with the movie as the audience is, and he wanted it to be over as much as I did. It's pretty seldom that I come across a film that has me counting down the minutes until the end, but "Summer Palace" managed to do just that. The story starts with Yu Hong, a girl from a small town in China who gets accepted to Beijing University just before the Tiananmen Square massacre. She makes friends with ... " [More]

Re:Top 5 Science Fiction
By indieabby88 in Top 5
"I'd say "Brazil" definitely counts as Sci-Fi. It's kind of in that weird genre that books like "1984" and "Brave New World" belong to (and obviously it's because those books were huge influences on Gilliam's movie). They're sort of Sci-Fi/Social Commentary/Satire type things. But the futuristicness of it (not to mention the dominance of air-duct companies) make it fit into the Sci-Fi collection pretty well.
