Re:Top 5 Guilty Pleasure films
By indieabby88 in Top 5
"I rented "Big Trouble in Little China" the other day on recommendation from some friends who claimed that it was "awesomely bad." I'm "ashamed" (read "not at all ashamed") to say that I really really liked it. Despite the fact that the script is completely awful (Kim Cattrall's character basically exists to spout exposition, and the thing is more chock-full of stereotypes than a fortune cookie at a Wok and Roll restaurant). It's the kind of weird adventure flick I could see myself loving as a little kid--aside from the numerous rotting corpses and colorful language, of course ; ) " [More]

By indieabby88 in Worst Movie Ever
"Gabe over at Videogum has been doing a series for a little over a year now called "Hunt for the Worst Movie of All Time" that is pretty stinking great. He takes suggestions from the readers and gives hilarious in-depth commentary on what he sees, complete with film clips and animated GIFs. While I'd argue with some of his picks ("Rachel Getting Married" is on the coming soon list), sometimes it's just fun to read his ranting. Has anyone else been reading this? Thoughts? " [More]

"Oh man! Hard choice! Wes Anderson has the best track record as far as I'm concerned. I haven't seen enough of PTA's stuff to judge, but he's totally a contender. I would have voted for Lindsay Anderson if it hadn't been for "O Lucky Man." I adore "If..." with every fiber of my being, but the completely ridiculous "sequel" just about ruined it for me. "Would it be possible to take part in only the later half of the marathon? I'm stuck in Pittsburg until the 10th, and don't have netflix, but I know I will have access to both Cache and the Piano Teacher once I get back to school. " [More]

"[quote user="Risselada"] Good to see you back here Abby!!! I have no idea what the context is for Coraline, and now I'm really interested. What is this all about? [/quote] I'm only too happy to fill you in! "Coraline" is a chilling little Grimm-caliber fable about a girl (named Coraline) who doesn't get much attention from her busy parents. Her family moves to a new apartment building filled with weird characters. One day, while exploring the house, she discovers a doorway to an alternate world where everything is just like it is back home, but better. Her house is prettier, the food is better, the garden is lovlier and, most importantly, her "other parents" in the mirror-world are attentive to her every need. The only unnerving thing is that everyone in this alternate world has buttons for eyes. Coraline's other parents want her to stay there forever, but to do so, she would also have to replace her eyes with buttons, which she obviously doesn't want to do. When Coraline goes hom ... Pontypool-IFC
By indieabby88 in Zombie Obsession
"I had the great opportunity while in Scotland this last month to check out "Pontypool" at the Edinburgh film festival. I know this movie only just opened in the states, and I'm pretty sure its release is fairly limited, but I wanted to know if anyone had seen this yet, or wants to, or has any thoughts about it. I, for one, enjoyed the hell out of this movie and think everyone should go check it out. I think it's a really refreshing take on the conventions of the zombie genre, and probably my favorite new zombie movie (that I've seen) since "28 Days Later." Here's a link to the trailer " [More]

"Whoa! Ms. June, your zombie walk kinda trumps the Lawrence zombie walk. We do ours every Halloween. It's pretty fun, but fairly simple. A bunch of fun-loving oddballs gather at night in the park at one end of the main downtown drag. We come in costume, slather on some makeup and trudge from one end of Massachusetts street to the other, terrorizing citizens and leaving bloody handprints on store windows. Some people get waaay too into it, but mostly it's just good fun. Last year was my first time walking. The best part was going to the coffee shop afterwards in my zombie makeup and ordering an Americano. " [More]

"[quote user="mciocco"] The Name of the Rose - I haven't seen this in years, so maybe it doesn't hold up, but this adaptation of an Umberto Eco novel was pretty good. [/quote] That movie was so freakin' bizarre. I should probably see it again (I couldn't have been older than 15 when I saw it). I just remember some funky homosexual undertones, and wondering why everyone was so ugly. However, if you enjoy period whodunits in that style, "The Reckoning" is a pretty interesting, often overlooked piece of work. It's got a good cast, too, which includes Paul Bettany, Willem Dafoe and Vincent Cassel. The director, Paul McGuigan, has a pretty interesting resume, too, if a tad varied. " [More]

"Up"
By indieabby88 in I Love Childrens Movies
"Yes, I know this is rather belated (sorry for my extended absence from the boards--the KU J-school will do that to you), but I feel duty-bound to start a discussion of "Up," the latest slice of fried gold to be added to the Pixar canon. I thought this was a wonderfully whimsical, funny, and surprisingly poignant film. I don't know about you guys, but there were a couple of times where it got pretty dusty in the theater for me (read: tears running down my cheeks as I tried to keep from showing my emotion). What did you guys think? Favorite parts? I'm partial to the "cone of shame." Did anyone get to see this in 3D? My second-rate local 8-screen theater only showed it in regular 'ol 2D, so I didn't get the full effect. Let's discuss! " [More]

"[quote user="CaPeach"] Does anybody care about the content of this movie? It was shocking to say the least. Many moms I talked to thought this would be an innocent movie, with little sounds that go bump and make you jump. Nobody said this was going to be perverted! I will not reccomend this to anyone. Who cares about digital FX, protect the kids! [/quote] You bring up a good point, CaPeach! Definitely something we should address. Here's my take: Neil Gaiman has been quoted in interviews as saying that adults are way more creeped out by the content of the book (and the movie) than children are. I think I'd be inclined to agree. Granted, I was 13 or 14 when I read the book for the first time, but it never gave me nightmares. Still, I wouldn't recommend the movie to children under the age of about eight, for sure. I think you have to give kids credit for being a bit stronger than we like to think. I mean, my generation grew up watching "The Goonies," (which is a pretty harrowi ... " [More]

"Hooray! Aussie films have formed the background of my early film education...and they continue to rank among my faves. Here are the ones I love: Breaker Morant (about Australian soldiers in the Boer War) The Last Wave Picnic at Hanging Rock (Combine with "The Last Wave" for a surreal Peter Weir double feature!) The Man from Snowy River (based on an epic poem by Aussie poet Banjo Patterson, who also wrote "Mulga Bill's Bicycle," a favorite book of mine as a kid) My Brilliant Career (Jane Austen meets Louisa May Alcott in the Outback...and it's a true story!) Rabbit-Proof Fence (error kept me from getting the link. Gross.) And, of course, no list would be complete without Mad Max. " [More]

"[quote user="seely"] I just saw a trailer for Coraline the other night and was pretty intrigued. I believe they said it was "hand drawn digital animation"--almost seems like a contradiction of terms but intriguing none-the-less. Anyone heard much about this or seen it? I'm hoping its not just another "visual masterpeice" with little or no substance beyond some snazzy animation. [/quote] Well, I saw the movie a couple of weeks ago, and I liked it, but I wasn't blown away. I loved the book back in high school, and I feel like a lot of what made it so effective was lost here. I'd have loved to see some of Dave McKean's influence (his illustrations are a big part of what made that book), and I feel like the animation, although it's obviously state-of-the-art, was too smooth. Part of the issue might have been the fact that I didn't see it in 3-D, so things might have looked a little flat. The reason I love stop-motion, and Henry Selick's older movies, is the evidence of human inter ... " [More]
