"Aronofsky, love him or hate him, is a visionary in the truest sense of the word, and this movie clinches that assessment. The Fountain is like one 90 minute crash course in experimental film theory, complete with fantastic acting and a story which will, even if only through incomprehensibility, intrigue. I will say, this is not an accessible movie, but it is masterful. Watch it if you're looking for something new and different. Watch it if you're looking for breathtaking performances. Annie Hall

This Is just a great one

"Annie Hall is one of those fabulous movies which make you just so happy to see it. Certainly, I could go on and on about the progressive nature of the film, its use of the medium, the awards it received, etc. Rather, I'd like to talk to you about how moving it is. The thing about Annie Hall is: you will laugh, and you will do it a lot, but there are also these sad, touching little moments which will break your heart in how ordinary they are. These are things we have all experienced, from the "mutual" break-up to the kidding yourself you "can always get back together." the film resounds with a real life sort of sadness and joy. There is just so much to be found here, you have to bring yourself to the picture. Maybe this movie went a long way to define American modern love. Maybe love went a long way to define this movie. All I know, is that this movie is a masterpiece....That said, I'm still not sure it should have beaten STAR WARS. " [More]

"Standing as my favorite slasher flick and most likely fave horror, Halloween is a movie I have fond memories of watching. The thing which makes this stand out among all the crap surfacing in its wake is the understanding of evil. Michael is not some random psycho randomly cutting people with a random knife. No, he is a cold, calculating monster. The entire movie is measured so carefully. This is the best of its kind, hands down. For more frightening fun, check out the sequel (one of the best sequels ever). " [More]

"This is one of those rare movies most everyone can get behind, and for good reason. It is a movie which exudes cool. Boondock Saints is one of the best popcorn movies of a post-Pulp Fiction era. Much like a Tarantino movie, you'll hear people talk about how cool this movie is and how awesome it is and how cool and awesome that one violent scene was. Which is all very well and good, but here's why you should see this movie, you aspiring auteur, you: it's really smart. You read that right, it is a smart action movie. It raises all sorts of questions on theology, morality and justice. You can really think your way through this one. Add great performances, some impressive shots, and a healthy dose of humor, and you have yourself a winner! Watch this one. You won't regret it. " [More]

"I usually don't see movies I don't end up liking. This was an exception. There was just so much wrong with this movie, I don't really want to detail it. I think my feelings on this movie are encapsulated in this one anecdote: I was watching this movie, and Nic suddenly showed up with a bicycle. I had become so bored with this stinker, I was racking my brain thinking, "Where did he get that bike? Where?!" I was just. So. Bored. I was so overtaken with ennui I got nitpicky over the costumes. The costumes, for crying out loud!Just take my word for it, don't see this movie. Please, just don't. " [More]

"This one is, for what it's worth, a member of my Top Five, and is the single most touching movie I've ever seen. Let me tell you why (you must want to know, otherwise you wouldn't be reading this). From a purely "high-brow, upper-echelon, I go to college and, boy, I'm smart" point of view, this is a very well put-together film. In his intensely personal style, Robert Redford did things with the camera only indie student filmmakers are brave/stupid enough to do, but these angles and motions are used in such a way as to open up a sort of painful dialogue. You'll be depressed from the camera work alone. The music is none too shabby to this end, either, as the less is more classical soundtrack plays like an orchestral sob song. Then you get to the story, which is, without a doubt, so damned sad! These titular characters are just so honest in their suffering you can't help but feel for them and empathize and sympathize and end up remembering the ... " [More]

"From a certain point of view, Big Trouble is very ambitious; it's trying to adapt an almost flakily (and incredibly well) written Dave Barry novel into a more condensed medium. On the other hand, the movie is a little more by-the -numbers. It isn't edgy, like the book sorta was, but, like the book it was funny. Actually, it was really funny. All in all, this was a nice little movie with a stellarly picked cast and a lot of good laughs. That said, be sure to read the book. " [More]
