Re: 50 First Dates
By euphoria in Totally Over-rated
"paul: have you seen The Departed? Gangs and the Aviator weren't that great, I liked Bringing Out the Dead, but the Departed is masterful. It's no Taxi Driver, but give one of the greatest directors of all time a break if he can't beat one of the greatest films of all time every movie. " [More]

Re: 50 First Dates
By euphoria in Totally Over-rated
"I thought the exact opposite about over/underrated. I didn't think the movie was that great but it was plenty cute, and I don't know anyone else that rated it well. The conclusion was ridiculous of course, but the movie required a little suspension of disbelief anyway. " [More]

Re: The best?
By euphoria in Anime Lovers
"I don't know about the best... it's a good one, but I think Akira, Spirited Away, Ghost in the Shell, and Princess Mononoke are ones more talked about / highly rated. Cowboy Bebop is talked about a lot because it has a TV series attached to it. " [More]

Multiple Thumbnail Sizes
By euphoria in Spout Feedback
"Currently spout cover images are only served in one size, and then are resized by the browser in whatever way you specify for the page. However, this is a huge waste of bandwidth. On an average browse through spout, I see approximately 300-400 film covers. As each one of these is about 8-10KB under the current system, that's 2400-4000KB, a lot of data. Personally, I think you should implement a system of multiple thumbnail sizes like Amazon has, if it's technically feasible for you. In the 90px width each could be reduced to around 4-6KB and the 60px width they could get down to 1.5-3KB... and these are the most common sizes on spout. The 150 only really appears on film detail view or hover.Anyway, there's my suggestion. I think it would save both spout and its audience a significant amount of bandwidth, it just depends on how easily you can manipulate the data you receive to generate new thumbnails and map them. Re: Unobtrusive flash use
By euphoria in Spout Feedback
"The flash/activex issue only arises with tag clouds, and only when I don't have flash installed. All tag clouds are affected. It's obvious why it's happening, I'm just proposing that it be technically implemented in a way that doesn't require flash/activex, but rather uses it when it's available (such as UFO). " [More]

Unobtrusive flash use
By euphoria in Spout Feedback
"I would like to see Spout use a script like Unobtrusive Flash Objects (UFO) to make the site more accessible. There are times I have accessed the site from a Flash-less environment and was confused to find parts of the page bare until I realized that is where the Flash went. If the user doesn't have Flash installed, you could either send an html-based tag cloud or at least just include a message about some features requiring flash. " [More]

Re: What is "interesting?& ...
By euphoria in Film Fridays
"I use the word primarily in the same way spoutgirl does, but not as a separate category between good and bad. Interesting means provocative or evocative in some way, but not necessarily good or bad... just affecting. It's a way for me to avoid passing judgment, but still express interest as opposed to boredom or disaffectedness. Why I came into this thread though was to note the existence of an extra space at the end of all the conversation links and group links on user pages, and to wonder why this thread is listed asWhat is "interesti ng"?instead ofWhat is "interesting"?when viewed from paul's user page.
