Personal statement:

I am double majoring in anthropology and theatre at Valdosta State University. My dream is to direct films with a powerful social and philosophical message, like Spielberg, Christopher Nolan, and Alfonso Cuaron do.

I love movies. I always have. Movies that make me laugh, movies that make me cry, movies that make cringe and hide behind a blanket, movies that make me think, movies that just blow me away. For me, there's a movie for every occasion, every emotion, and every problem, be it personal or social. Which is why I like to make lists of similar films.

I am the type of person to make film references, or to identify with film characters to the extent I think of them when I make decisions in my own life. I am the type of person to refuse to watch a movie if I'm not in the mood for that genre, to insist on rewinding to catch that bit of dialogue, and to refuse to say I've seen a movie unless I've seen all of it.

"More malevolent inanimate objects, more gratuitous violence (and nudity), more unrealistic death scenes, so repetitive it's no longer shocking. " [More]

"I enjoyed it, but a lot of the scenes were tedious and lagging -- the rhythm was off, and occasionally it seemed too stretched and overdone. Also, it wasn't very clear for people who hadn't read the book. I had, but I suspected that the (successful) attempt to stay true to the story by necessity left out the inter-textual complexity that actually helped explain what was going on. I was very impressed by Imelda Staunton's chilling protrayal of the evil Umbride, and the girl who played Luna was just terrific. And hooray for special effects and Radcliffe's excellent acting, as always. " [More]

"One of the most powerful movies I've ever seen. I felt like I was there, and I literally sat in shock after it was over. Thank you, Greengrass, for this unsensationalized, sensitive approach to the tragedy and heroism of that day! " [More]

"I didn't know anything but the basic premise when I saw it, and I was very impressed by Verbinski's artful direction and Watts' emotional performance. Still one of my favorites. " [More]
An unusual crime flick

"There are plenty of movies about organized crime. Few could examine its impact on a single family with the depth like "History of Violence" does. Indeed, its focus on a small-town family which suddenly finds itself with "a history of violence" that makes this film a powerful psychological drama, rather than a heavily political or gorey action flick. (Warning: even with violence having considerably less screen time than your average B horror movie, the violence is quite intense.) Riveting direction, a compelling and refreshingly uncliched story, and superb acting make "A History of Violence" a deeply disturbing "thinker" drama coupled with jarring violence a la "A Clockwork Orange." However, I personally found this movie easier to stomach than "A Clockwork Orange." That is, while "Clockwork" was a one-time view for me, I would watch "A History of Violence" again. " [More]

"The plot of "Inside Man" revolves around the perfect bank robbery...or so you think. The entire film is based upon deception. Even the direction throws you for a loop: the editing upsets your sense of chronology, film colors and gradient change, offsetting the "reality" of the story, and the entire tense storyline is speckled not with true comic relief, but dark humor, social commentary, and closeups of breasts. This was my first Spike Lee film, and it certainly took some getting used to, not only for the no-longer-novel twisted-chronology technique and the film grade changes, but for the seemingly irrelevant Arab and Jew remarks made by characters, sexy conversations, and a brief lesson on political correctness which Denzel's character gives to an NYPD cop (which actually have quite a bit to do with the plot). The whole movie would seem quite random, except that the well-written script and indie-style directing techniques tightly integrate the parts of t ... " [More]

"This hilarious and colorful musical has terrific performances by Nikki Blonksy -- who is so adorable -- Zac Efron, John Travolta, and the rest of the excellent ensemble cast, and songs that have kept me dancing for days! A real treat. " [More]
