Personal statement:

I love film.  I'm not very good at filtering, so I've seen more films than I wouls ever care to reccomend, but I know what I like.

The critics that come closest to my personal style would be the late Gene Siskel and Cosmo Landesman from the Sunday Times, although he can be a bit prissy at times.

My all-time greats are such a mix: the Deer Hunter, All That Jazz, the Shawshank Redemption-- I promise t post the list i full so everyone can see how very strange I am.  Watch this space...

"Where to begin? A cast that includes Katharine Hepburn, James Stewart and Cary Grant should be enough for anyone, but they are shored up by a superb supporting cast and a script that krrps getting deeper with every viewing. Sent down to Phildelphia to cover Hepburn's closely guarded society wedding, Stewart's a reluctant paparazzi and a struggling writer who feels out of place amongst the old money set. Cary Grant plays Hepburn's honest ex husband who has been blackmailed into getting Stewart in to the gathering. The tensions are high, the dialogue cracks along and sexual hang-ups are eluded to. A masterpiece in timing, writing and direction, this is no black and white film to be sniffed at. Enjoy. " [More]

It deals with the connections that alter with the successes and failures that each family member brings with them into their relationships-- this may not sound like a Woody Allen picture, but it has his stamp all the way through it. There is also a fine minor leimotif about creativity that also runs through the film, as painters, writers, perdormers and even rock musicians make their appearances, and even poetry is used to woo oe sister by another's husband.I don't think I've ever seen a more anxious and gratifying performance out of Michael Caine, and Dianne Wiest and Barbara Hershey are also astounding. This movie seems to have been filmed at the zenith of the Farrow/Allen blended family, and both their performances are relaxed and responsive. This is a terrific film for anyone just discovering Allen's talents or just interested i ... " [More]
