"That's - just like - your opinion, man."
Personal statement:

One of my professors says "Education, at its best, makes you less susceptible to manipulation . . . It doesn't enlarge your circle of friends though, does it?"

I've found this to be true in a lot of ways, but not on this website.  Seeing movies (~education) has enlarged my circle.

Recast THE MATRIX (1999) -- the ...

"Winner: jdamer83's picks knocked me out. Neo is essentially a kung-fu Dirty Harry, so who better than Clint Eastwood? As Dr. Strangelove shows, George C. Scott is a hypnotic scenery-chewer and perfect for Agent Smith. And Ernest Borgnine as Tank! I'm glad we don't see him die on-screen (I don't think I could handle losing Marty). Every choice is inspired: John Cazale as Apoc, Dennis Hopper and Dean Stockwell as the agents, Telly Savalas as the villainous Cypher. Check out page 2 of this discussion for jdamer83's story surrounding the Robert Evans-produced, Coppola-directed Enter the Matrix. Enter the Matrix- a late 60s/early 70s extravaganza Clint Eastwood as Neo. A no-brainer. Eastwood is one of the biggest stars in the world, and his stoic, other-worldly nature perfectly suits the character. Because of a fear that he will look ridiculous doing kung-fu, Eastwood is initially reluctant to take the role, but he accepts after Evans personally offers to buy a house for him. James ... "In honor of Heath Ledger's irreplaceable role as the Joker, we've picked the most difficult recasting game we could think of: recast Reservoir Dogs. Switching out Keitel or Buscemi is like putting on a new pair of shoes that are filled with swamp water. I don't even know exactly what that means, but the point is, it would feel really wrong. "
BAVMOTORS1: "Documentaries are right out because that makes the list no fun. Ok, stop right there! Seriously? This is the first sentance from the proposal that won? Why do documentaries not make the list any fun? To me documentaries are probably the most appropriate for this kind of list. And what's not fun about documentaries? If you are implying that documentaries themselves just can't be fun, then sadly maybe you do represent more of the majority of life on earth and your list would be most appropriate to send to the aliens.
Saucy stuff Rizzo, but good questions.
If our government or the governments of the world had to pick one person to be in charge of making this list who do you think they would pick? "
Hey guys, You can see the winner on page 5 of this discussion thread. You can also hear Adam and Matty discuss the contest on the Filmspotting podcast. Our next challenge: take the red pill, recast The Matrix (1999). Have a good holiday weekend, skypilot Top 5 Movies to Teach an Alien About Earth The year is 2010. The United States has a black president, people play golf with titanium sticks, cars are powered by--of all things--hydrogen, and Netflix offers every movie ever made on the Internet. NASA gets a signal from an extra-terrestrial life form. The alien has just signed up for Netflix and wants five movies that will teach it about life on Earth. For reasons too elaborate to explain, you--yes you--have been picked to choose these five movies. Do you go historical with Schindler's List? Or put a positive spin on things with Dumbo? Do you explain children with A Christmas Story and old people with Cocoon? Or do you really roll the dice and send them ... " [More]

"bavmotors1, you are hereby declared humanity's ambassador. Your films are the sole cargo of the unmanned spacecraft Image1, which launches this morning. Your proposal: Documentaries are right out because that makes the list no fun. Outside of that what an alien “is” carries such a broad range of possibilities that would alter what one might put on the list. Would the alien be like Alf or Galactus? Eating cats or eating planets? Ultimately every study of human kind will produce more questions than answers so that is where I came from with my list. After the number one pick the rest are in no particular order. Contact. The alien has searched the “big ass sky” to find tiny Earth. Contact relates what the experience is like for human kind. The search for alien life might be the only similar effort the two species share. The question Elanor Arroway asks at the end is one I think we'd hope to get the answer to. You know... as long as we're talking. Blo ... " [More]

"The winners of the Matrix recasting contest have been announced at the end of this discussion and on the Filmspotting podcast. Take the Red Pill: Recast THE MATRIX (1999) Here's a bit of trivia: did you know the Wachowski brothers originally conceived of The Matrix as a graphic novel? The movie pitch they presented to Warner Brothers was 600 pages of storyboard, pretty much a graphic novel in itself. For those who gripe about Keanu Reeves, it's time to put your money where your mouth is and pick a better Neo. But can anyone fill Hugo Weaving's shoes? I've been imagining other actors saying "Mister An-der-son," and they all just seem...wrong. Keanu Reeves ... Neo Laurence Fishburne ... Morpheus Carrie-Anne Moss ... Trinity Hugo Weaving ... Agent Smith Gloria Foster ... Oracle Joe Pantoliano ... Cypher Marcus Chong ... Tank Julian Arahanga ... Apoc Matt Doran ... Mouse ... " [More]
