[What do you think?]
"You know, I for one am getting pretty tired of these slasher movies that tend to involve little more than watching someone get terrorised for eighty minutes. What happened to the big build-up followed by the quick, frantic kill? What happened to the protagonist actually surviving?I'll cut Them some slack, only because it's based on real-life events. You know, in the same way Wolf Creek, The Texas Chainsaw Massacre and The Silence of the Lambs were all inspired or based on real events. The plot adds nothing new to the tried and tested "prisoner in one's own home" formula, with our leads running round their house trying to escape from an intruder (or intruders) intent on killing them in a no-doubt grisly fashion. But while watching the film, one question kept coming back to me again and again - "Why would a young couple want to live in a giant, isolated farmhouse? Surely they'd want to live in a city, or at least not in a building that looks like every ... "

[Be the first to tell us!]
"Clerks was one of the last Kevin Smith films I saw, having first stumbled across Mallrats and checking stuff out from there. But I always knew that when I finally did get a chance to see Clerks, I would not be disappointed. The movie itself is fantastic. The picture is grainy, the acting is sometimes wooden, and there are many moments of pure genius. It's what any director's first feature film should be like. Smith an his crew took the meagre resources at their disposal and made the best film they could with it. I wasmore than a little impressed. However, it was "Snowball Effect", the documentary that came with the Clerks X special edition, that really made the big impact on me. Listening to Kevin and Scott Mosier talk about the trials ans tribulations of the production, seeing how much hard work they put into the movie, made me finally stop screwing around and get on with writing my own feature. Those guys made a film for less than $28,000, and they made it for t ... "

Pan's Labyrinth
A remarkable fantasy horror

[Be the first to tell us!]
"Set against the Spanish Civil War, Pan's Labyrinth is visually amazing, with a story that is fascinating. A young girl is charged with three tasks by a faun (the Pan of the title.) Upon successfully completing the three tasks, he will help her reveal her true identity. While we watch her move further into a terrifying, dark fantasy world, the real world around her is no less terrifying. Her stepfather, leading a troop of Fascist soldiers against local left-wing guerrillas, rules with an iron fist, dealing out brutal punishments, waiting for his wife to give birth to the son he wants. Pan's Labyrinth is not easy to watch, and some scenes are genuinely frightening. But you will be hard-pressed to find a better example of the fantasy genre than this. It truly is a wonderful film. "

"Barry Blaustein, like me, is a wrestling fan. And like me, he is sometimes embarrassed to be. After all, professional wrestling has given its fans many reasons to feel that way. Beyond The Mat is not one of them, however. Indeed, it's one of my favourite documentaries, examining the spectacle of professional wrestling without trying to be ironic, without trying to make those who live that life look foolish. It's a story filled with hope and tragedy. From the young newcomers trying to make a name for themselves on the independent circuit, to the veterans looking back on bad choices and missed opportunities, Blaustein shares a tale as compelling as any other. If you're a wrestling fan, you need to watch this movie. And if you're not, you might have a new-found respect for the men and women who step into the squared circle and willingly hurt themselves for the entertainment of the crowd. "

Four Eyed Monsters
A true original

[Be the first to tell us!]
"I first saw Four Eyed Monsters quite by accident. Walking around Chicago, with little to do except go watch movies, I read about the film and figured I'd check it out. I was not disappointed. Smart and funny, yet with a sense of tragedy and filled with integrity, this is a film made for the love of making film. That the movie wasn't even completed when I watched it (Arin and Susan had recorded a message asking us to return next week, when they would have the last of the graphics finished) made me love it even more. Here are two film makers, two artists, who simply want to share what they have created with the world. If there's any justice, enough people will support this movie so that these great film makers will be able to claw their way out of debt and make another film with the humour, pathos and originality of Four Eyed Monsters.
