Personal statement: I love fairy tales. Favorites: Bergman's Fanny and Alexander, Cocteau's Beauty and the Beast, del Toro's Pan's Labyrinth, and Campion's The Piano. I believe one is free to tell deeper truths with archetypal tools available in fairly tales.

"i'm 41 and saw it originally in my 20s in college. i just watched it again with my 15 yr old son. we already like the soundtrack together, already had some quotes. "the more you drive, the less intelligent you are." good, silly fun. the great thing about the film is that after all these years, it still held up. it was still entertaining. my 15 yr old son liked it, laughed, quoted it the next day. we were not disappointed. "I'll let other folk talk about special effects, score, cinematography. For me, the true heart of the great film is the story. I would consider Pan's Labyrinth among my top favorite films--along with Cocteau's Beauty & the Beast and Bergman's Fanny & Alexander. I suppose that says a lot about my taste in films. Why do people think fairy tales are for just for children? Cocteau didn't. Neither did Bergman. I, too, dislike graphic violence, but I feel the torture scenes (and the bottle scene-oh!) were necessary to depict the Captain as a monster. A real old fashioned fairy tale (in league with Grimm's grimmest) tells the truth warts and all--or maybe the truth as wishful thinking. The rewards of love and happiness go to the pure of heart and those willing to sacrifice. For evil, there's death and loss of identity. Ultimately, a fairy tale is about redemption, but Pan's Labyrinth (as well as other great fairy tale films) requires the viewer to re-assess what a happy ending can be and w ... " [More]

Ambient film scores
By xinem in Movie Soundtracks
"I'm interested in Soundtracks in how they elevate a film, but also as pieces of music on their own. I like the ambience of a movie score; sometimes it can take over like the soundtrack of whatever you're doing at the time. I like to listen to them when I write. Love these: 1. Tous les Matins du Monde (Jordie Savall playing the Viola da Gamba) 2. The Piano and Carrington and probably other Michael Nyman scores 3. Cliff Martindale's score for Solaris (Soderbergh's). Minimalist but still emotionally charged... I'm a huge Philip Glass fan and own all of his soundtracks, but I'd have to say my three favorites are: 1. The Secret Agent (directed by Christopher Hampton) 2. Candyman (honestly, I've never seen this horror film, and there's a long story about Glass's involvement that I won't go into, but the eerie toy piano combined with Glass's usual stuff carries itself well). 3. Of all the "Qatsi" film, I like the score for Naqoyqatsi best, probably because Yo-yo Ma plays on it. There ... " [More]
