"I went to go see this with Mandy tonight and I thought I would give a crack at explaining why I enjoyed it even though I'm not totally sure what I think. Perhaps while writing it will come to me that the movie DID suck. Things I liked: the camera work, the soundtrack, and the young actors. I also REALLY like movies where good things happen. I think its way too depressing to always have terrible things happen just because its like "real life." When I go to the movies, sometimes I just want to be super happy for the characters. YAY! GOOD THINGS HAPPEN SOMETIMES IN REAL LIFE TOO! Anyway, I also liked the cycles within the film. I know that is one of the things you disliked, but the repetative structure worked for me. The cycle of question and memory was not so rigid that it didnt still feel like a fluid story to me. And the cycle of betrayal and redemption between the two brothers was probably my favorite part of the film. I know you thought that Salim's reform was "inexplica ... "

"I get it. The formula that is. Stuff happens at work. Stuff happens at home. They relate to and effect one another. The element I have responded to on each episode is the reaction of Ron vs. the reaction of Mary. (As a side note, its weird how they are listed as un-named, and yet they are called by name in the episodes ??) We get to see Ron's day job and then we get to hear about Mary's time at work. This is very familiar to me as when at home I rarely bring up work while my wife seems to speak of nothing else. I wonder if this is just coincidence but it seems likely that Swanberg has hit upon another tidbit of relationship realism that gives this series its charm and "truthiness." I found myself chuckling uncomfortably or grimacing during the first section of each short and then grinning during the home interactions. However, after reading the comments of the other posters from previous episodes, I have begun to wonder if this series is meant for or somehow ... "

Directors
"Huh...Rizzo, I find it very interesting that you keep refering to general acceptance or popular polls to decide if something is a masterpiece. I'm not sure I would list that as the most important criteria for "masterpiece." Also, Indieabby: I hope to high heaven that Zach Snyder can make something better than 300. If 300 is a masterpiece of film making...well...that sucks. That movie was bad. Lots of potential.....but ugh. I REALLY wanted that movie to be good. sigh..... Hmmm, I suppose these two comments do bring up the question of definition again. Are we talking about masterpiece in relation ONLY to the single director? Or are we talking about masterpiece in relation to the art of making movies. It feels like there is a nice middle ground to be had here, but Im not sure everyone agrees on what that is. It seems to me that we are talking about both a bit. The movie which is going to be called a masterpiece or the director that we are hoping has a masterpiece is bo ... "

"Wow Jymkata...I don't think I could have put my thoughts into words any better than you did there. How did you read my mind? Just kidding...but really, you make VERY good points there. I am NOT very patriotic...however, I find that bashing "America" or "Americans" is just silly....The differeneces you point out between Americans and solidiers, arms dealers, racists, etc are dead on. Now "Southerners...." Again...just kidding. Sorta. Matt "

WHOA WHOA WHOA...What if you were to make a documentary about yourself, but to avoid it getting too narcicistic, you do some sort of wierd TV Funhouse deal where you take the sound from the film and then animate it with animals....Soo, Porcupine, you would be a young.....porcupine??"Mom, the girls just don't like my spikes..." "Rod Stewart? EFING ROD STEWART??Wow....and I thought you liked me. All I ever think about when I think about Rod Stewart is that ridiculously terrible song he and Sting and Bryan Adams did for Three Muskateers....One for All and All for One or something....maybe that is backwards...Rizzo, I dont remember what I sang at the birthday party, but I DO remember thinking you were the funniest person I knew at the time you sang Brown Sugar....and there was that one biker dude in the front row....and he was just aghast.....LOLIt makes me laugh to think of that tough, leather vest wearing biker standing up and saying in a Steve Martin-ish like voice...."I mean, COME ON, I think I really have a right to be offended here..." "Hmmm...I guess I will put it like this:Lester Burnahm has a mid-life crisis. He is mired in a deep depression and finds that along the way, he has floated far from the familiar dock of family life. This is a terrifying realization for him, but freeing at the same time. But, instead of trying to make things "better," he decides to stick it out in the mud. And sure, this is very gratifying for a while. It can be "rewarding" to be extremely self-indulgent, to stop caring about those around you. But it is also very selfish. Perhaps there are moral limits to this that need to be observed. And I definitely think that Kevin Spacey's character crosses those limits. Now, I dont want to get into an argument about recreational drug usage or whether its ok to splurge on a sweet red Camaro and attempt to re-live the "glory days." But I think there is a certain evil that resides in the heart of a middle aged man that makes a conscious decision to seduce and sleep with a 15 year old g ... "

"Kev and Paul, I really resonated with a lot of what you said in your latest FilmCouch. I really enjoy hearing the two of you and your guests talk. As you mentioned, Darth Vader is one of the best villians that I have ever seen. And although you guys mentioned him in conjunction with specifically The Empire Strikes Back, I think that one of the things that I liked about him as a villian was the end of the third movie. He is the embodiment of evil in many ways. He wears all black, has a cape and speaks with a deviously low voice and the mechanized parts of his body are distinctively "inhuman." I was thinking about what makes him so scarey...and it isn't that he just kills people, lots of villians do that. No, I think it has a lot to do with how he slowly CHOKES THEM TO DEATH....sheesh. Bad. Ness. But really, what makes him SUCH a good bad guy....is how human he actually turns out to be. And how he saves his son from death...not just saves him, DIES for him. That is amazi ... "

"Yeah, I tried to post it here but it the formatting was all messed up from moving it from my email to Spout's page. So, I basically reprinted or rewrote all the info from it in that other enormous post. Sorry, I should have cleared that up a bit ago. DUDE! Not only was he a part of the winning team...he was mentioned ALL over the place as being the KEY factor to thier victory. HAWT. Tell him I am impressed with his poise and composure under fire. The vids of him are really cool too. Plus, now is a richie rich! LAWLS! double w00t my friend....Matt "
