Re: Spout Feature Feedback: Mov ...

"It's not clear whether you're getting recommendations based on one of your favorite movies or whether you're required to rate all movies that pop up when you enter your favorite flick. I didn't see all of the movies that popped up so I wasn't able to rate. Seems like you have to earn you recommendations by rating. I just want recommendations based on my movie watching history! Maybe there's a disconnect between asking people to rate vs. entering your favorite movie. Maybe it should be one or the other that earns your recommendations. " [More]

Re: Billy Baldwin

"I kind of forgot he was in the movie actually. Despite it's disturbing scenes with the youngest son wiping down lockers and library books with… ugh, I can't even write it. Now, I'm all flustered. Uh, I thought this film was a great insight into the lives of families experiencing the trauma of divorce; esp. the vantage point of the kids. And Jeff Daniels was splendid, even if I hated his self-inflated, needy, character. Alright brother? " [More]

"Speaking of Requiem for a Dream…have you watched it? I was talking with a group of friends about the most disturbing films they've ever watched and someone mentioned Requiem. Good stuff? " [More]

The Squid and The Whale

"An alternate title could be "The Has-Been Writer Relives Glory Days Like the Jock Who Scored the Winning Touchdown and The… oh, I don't know. A pending divorce is the premise of the flick. Two noted writers, one forever referring to his days when he was published, the other a more recent success. There's some mention of this being the catalyst for the separation, but also years of unfaithfulness. Their two boys are the innocent victims of the circumstance. Jeff Daniels bitter character, Bernhard, maddened me with passive opinions about literary greats, people in general and inappropriate advice about relationships to his teenage son Not to mention his need for encouraging his youngest to be anything but a "philistine". Both parents selfishly fail to see how the separation is affecting both of the children, and instead are wrapped in their own feelings and using their children as sound boards. Happily, and sadly, the older of the boys realizes that he needn't side with either ... " [More]

40 Year Old Virgin or The Machi ...

"Nothing says diverse tastes like a weekend of the '40 Year Old Virgin, followed by 'The Machinist', followed by 'Grey's Anatomy'. And I like 'em all for different reasons. Don't be so wishy washy you might say. Alright, alright, I would answer. If I had to choose a favorite it would be The Machinist. This is a film I've been longing to see for some time, and it was worth the wait. Christian Bale's emaciated character ropes us into his world of sleeplessness, delusions, and guilt. Why can't he sleep? You'll have to find out for yourself. And can you imagine not sleeping for an entire year? Would you die? My fiancé says you would. I've never heard of death by insomnia, but he's pretty smart. But then again, he didn't like this film because he thought it was unrealistic. This coming from a guy that loves movies like Van Wilder and Top Secret. Huh. " [More]

TV marathons: Why are they so a ...

"I just spent 2 days watching all-day marathon events. Yesterday it was at least 10 hours of Mythbusters - minus the few naps I took. And today it's a Fox Family show called Wildfire. Prior to today I've never even heard of this show, but I can't change the channel. About an hour ago I hit the 'mute' button, hopped on Spout, and kept the show running with no sound. But wait, out of the corner of my eye I saw a fight break out and I had to turn the sound back on. And lucky for me the season premiere is on tonight! " [More]

Re: Anyone seen Rent?
By CaptainO in The Musical-Lovers and Critics
"I refuse to see this film. I too, love the stage version enough to marry it. Enough to memorize the entire soundtrack and enough to have it seen it once in GR and once in NY. I can only guess that they've edited the hell out of the script and turned it into a sappy love story. According to E!, the cast sings and dance as if they're oblivous to the eviction notices, the friends dying of AIDS and the drug addiction. I say skip it. " [More]
