"I actually like ths psycho remake.  I thought of it more of an excercise in discipline rather than a "remake".  Lets see...no particular order:1. Finding Forrester - Gus Van Sant2. Oceans 11,12,13 - Soderberg3.  The Idiots - Lars Von Trier4. Master and Commander - Peter Wier5. Fast Food Nation - Richard LinklaterI hated brothers grimm, but have never really liked terry gilliam, and yes, planet of the apes was awful. just awful. " [More]

"Good topic. I'll give it some thought.  I've never heard it called the Hays code before.  All four years in school, I only heard it referred to as simply "the production code" or the "production code era." " [More]

Re: Directors and remakes

"It seems like people shudder at the idea of a remake.  I think with Peter Jackson, the attraction was just that he loved the original so much that he wanted to remake it with all the spectacle that today's computers could afford.  For Gus Van Sant, he has always been interested in excercise kind of like Von Trier's obsession with constraint.  Watch Gerry (phenomenal) or Elephant.  I think for Van Sant, Psycho was a "project" film or an excercise in filmmaking and discipline.  Other times, i'm sure a studio thinks they will be able to make a load of money off a remake like Ocean's or Italian Job.  I'm actually looking forward to Rob Zombies interpretation of Halloween.  I actually enjoyed both of his previous films, (in all their depraved glory). I'm not too impressed with the trailers though. " [More]

"Wow. this may be the hardest topic for top 5 anyone has come up with.  I can only think of a few and this is stretching it.1. Deerhunter - their latest album Cryptograms is unbelievable. and also a movie2. Xiu Xiu - I love this band. really really bizarre. and i've heard of the movie, but never seen it.3. The Roots - Maybe this is after Roots?4. The Good, The Bad, and the Queen - I can only assume it was influenced by the good, bad and ugly. This topic may be a little abstract! " [More]

Electroma

"I had the pleasure of seeing Daft Punk's "Electroma" at the Metro in Chicago a few weeks ago, and really enjoyed it.  Aesthetically think Gus Van Sant's, Gerry.  Except for two guys walking in the desert, it is two robots.  There are some very disturbing images, and very beautiful images as well.  I don't think there is a word spoken in the entire film, but I can't recall for sure.  But it is great.  I recommend it if you can find it. "actually, 8 1/2 has been mentioned a couple of times.  And I would say Spinal Tap is not about making movies, it is about a band, and happens to have some "movie making" worked into it, but thats not what its about. but thats just my opinion. welcome to spout, ovation! " [More]

"Abby, I'm glad you enjoyed Once, it is really a great great film.  As for 24 Hour Party People, it is a good one, but not in my top 5.  I do like it though. And Joy Division is all right.  I can't seem to really get into them though.  I'm more of a Smiths fan.  A little more light hearted but still depressing. " [More]

"I like this topic.  Ambiguous endings are not only "true to life", but doesn't have to spoon feed the audience good feelings and "closure" that people find so important.  This will contain the dreaded "SPOILERs"1.  The Bicycle Thief - In the end, he still needs to find a way to get to work, and make it up to his son.  How will he ever do this??2.  Do The Right Thing - Will Sal ever rebuild?  Will the community ever rest?  Find forgiveness and seek forgiveness?3.  Wild Strawberries (?) - I am trying to recall exactly what happens in the end, but as I recall and someone correct me if I'm wrong, he gets tucked into bed by his children, and it is the start to a repairing relationship.4.  The Celebration - The film ends with the father having his "last meal" with his children, but I had the feeling it wasn't over and there was possibility for restoration.  After all it had only been the previous night all hell broke loose. 5.  Once - The ending is very much so "what do we do ...
