BONER JAMS '03.

"To all of you who saw that embarrassing, border-line incomprehensible and hastily removed post from a while ago - I'm sorry for being weird about it and I hope this serves as an explanation of some kind. Officially "breaking up"(so-to-speak) a month after the fact is a weird, weird thing. But, good ultimately. i guess. No. It's good. It's completely terrifying and hard, but good and necessary. Closure is truly an amazing feeling, I've found. It was great to talk, and learn about scary new jobs and new long-distance boyfriends and other things I would have not missed out on knowing about if we weren't being so stupid. We talked everything out, and I could tell that it was a good conversation because I lost my appetite and wanted to cry. driving home and listening to a mix* I later found out was made for her by the new boyfriend before he headed home to LA, I kind of did a little. These were straight up hardcore over-the-top "I love you" jams that completely tore me up late 2004. ... " [More]

Re: SUPERMAN RETURNS - THOUGHTS ...
By P3X984 in The Imagination of Fantasy
"This is a difficult one to really pull off. You are making a new Superman movie following Superman II (ignoring the fact that Superman III & IV were ever made), having to ignore some of the plot points that have come out in Smallville, and have to be very careful to not "upstage" Reeves in his most beloved role, while still creating an exciting enough and important enough plot to capture a wide audience (and try to recoup the $260M production cost). So some natural suspension of disbelief is necessary, but I agree that Lois Lane’s continuing ignorance of Superman’s true identity is a bit difficult to comprehend and accept. Especially when the “thing” LL does makes him go to the “place” and ….. it’d be sure nice if there was a way to obscure plot sensitive points that readers could turn on or off at their choice ( have to think about that one ……). Re: Let's compare...
By P3X984 in The Musical-Lovers and Critics
"OK, I'll give you "Shipoopi" - I am still listening to 3 kids (5,7 & 9) sing that song at home and I understand the "Oh Shoot Me". It isn't in my "top 10 list" of musicals either but I really do enjoy the show (haven't seen the "Ferris Bueller" version of the movie, but really enjoyed the show at the Civic). It is definitely dated – I know this because I had to explain several parts of the “humor” to my kids. However, I will still say that, when viewed for fun (on a certain level) it is a good show (better than most). I agree that good cast members make all the difference – I haven’t seen the show with an average (or below average) cast, but I’d imagine it would be terrible. But I really don’t know any shows that aren’t markedly better with a really good cast. " [More]

"Kahn, hands down. Best plot, characters, first movie to use CGI, highest opening weekend ever (at the time), etc. Khan: "I've done far worse than kill you, Admiral. I've hurt you. And I wish to go on hurting you. I shall leave you as you left me, as you left her: marooned for all eternity in the center of a dead planet, buried alive. Buried alive." Kirk: "KHAAAAAN! KHAAAAAAN!" "OK, the Music Man's plot isn't Shakespeare, but I don’t think it is as bad as you think.I think Music Man is a classic plot which is no more than “swindler turn legit” by finding someone who loves him in spite of knowing full well what he is and what he is up to. There is little depth to the plot – it doesn’t try to be more than it is. Sure Washburn remembers Harold as “Greg” but who knows what his real name is, might be Harold, might be Greg, might not even be Hill – that’s not the point. The show is some fun music, some great situational comedy, and turn-around of the two major characters toward an inevitable conclusion where they end up together. The irony is that, in the end, every town does need a “boy’s band” to revitalize and shape up the community. Maybe Hill’s new/reformed/legit persona as “Harold” is appropriate as opposed to the old/cooked/con-man “Greg”. I think if there was a “Music Man 2” it would be Marian and Harold/Greg building their relationship, him dea ... " [More]

"I'll start . . . . What about "V for Vendetta"? March 17th When you combine the Wachowski brothers, Natalie Portman, and a pretty interesting story line (synopsis below), this might be an interesting movie. Though it seems that the only "science fiction" component is that it occurs in the future . . . but that's another discussion. Set against the futuristic landscape of totalitarian Britain, V For Vendetta tells the story of a mild-mannered young woman named Evey (NATALIE PORTMAN) who is rescued from a life-and-death situation by a masked man (HUGO WEAVING) known only as “V.” Incomparably charismatic and ferociously skilled in the art of combat and deception, V ignites a revolution when he urges his fellow citizens to rise up against tyranny and oppression. As Evey uncovers the truth about V’s mysterious background, she also discovers the truth about herself – and emerges as his unlikely ally in the culmination of his plan to bring freedom and justice back to a society ... "A few plot similarities does not a “sameness” make. Logan’s run was about post-apocalyptic underground society that had implemented its own mythology and rituals in order to survive. The Island is about genetic engineering and cloning and the deception of the occupants in order to keep them in line (more like The Matrix in this regard). The Island was about “big business” where Logan’s Run was about “big ideas” and perhaps government. Maybe the comparison between the two troubles me most because I really like one of the movies and really don’t like the other one. " [More]

"On this you may be right, but how many "sci-fi revivals" have there actually been on TV? Most of the big-screen movie attempts (e.g. Planet of the Apes, and Lost in Space ) have been terrible. What other TV revivals have there been? " [More]
