"I just saw The Secret Life of Words (and put a Spout review in place), wanting to catch up with more of Sarah Polley's acting after seeing her Away From Her. I also remember My Life Without Me, not quite as enthusiastically, but still a good one by a woman director. " [More]

"After seeing After Her, directed by Polley, I wanted to go back and see some of her work acting. This was one I had never seen, and it was quite rewarding. The strong writing and strong acting are in danger of going into the overwrought and I suppose they do by a small margin from time to time. Do you suppose working with Julie Christie in this recent movie made Polley aware of her for After Her? I thought Christie was fine in the small part she had here, and excellent in After Her (much moreso than Olympia Dukakis -- but I should put all this about the other movie in the right place!). The system-supplied blurb up top says " Partially deaf from working an untold number of hours in a loud factory, Hanna must wear a hearing aid." I assumed it stemmed from her experience in ex-Yugoslavia, and she just didn't mention it during her wrenching exposition to Josef. " [More]

"This doesn't bother with all the " maybe we can send up a rocket to shoot down the asteroid" plots, nor even tell us exactly why the world is coming to an end. We just see thateveryone knows and sort of accepts that, and the real action of the movie is in their choices of how to spend the last day and night of life on Earth. I particularly liked the more-than-a-cameo from super Canadian director David Cronenberg.I'm really serious about rating this higher than all the blockbuster end-of-the-world movies, and not putting this in some special out-of-the-competition category either. One more ... Cholodenko ... Re: ...

"sorry, one last afterthought, Lisa Cholodenko's High Art and Laurel Canyon. (Maybe these were mentioned. Not meaning to diss Spout's nice site, but it would be good to have a search that could be limited to a Group or a Discussion. And yes, I did read before posting, but admittedly not 100%). "I'm not sure I've seen that ... maybe at a fest. But early Campion movies that are really worth looking at again today include Sweetie and An Angel at My Table. I'm not that hot about The Piano. (sorry, i just took off on Campion and wasn't really following your thread branch about debuts) Dana " [More]
Antonia Bird Re: Top 5 Movies ...
By Dana_K in Filmspotting
"i was starting to post "You left out Antonia Bird" but then I checked back and saw you hadn't! However, I haven't seen your nominee Ravenous (and am unlikely to, for genre reasons, sorry). But I would offer both Bird's Priest and especially Face as really top notch. Dana " [More]
