Good but not a great Johnny To ...

"Exiled, for lack of a better term or catchphrase, has been marketed as the direct sequel to The Mission, arguably one of the best "heroic bloodshed" films released in the past fifteen years (not including A Bittersweet Life) It is not, I believe; that said, it has all of the great Johnny To filmic signatures, i.e. the great framing, gunshots parced out like notes on a music scale. Hard guys doing what needs to be done without a moment's hesitation. However, it did not resonate as I though it did (Breaking News, with its great opening 7 minute shot, was more spectacular but it seemed to be doing more - - a commentary on the overglutted media coverage surrounding any event of note). That said, about 7 1/2 stars out of ten. Anthony Wong was great as was Lam Suet, but Simon Yam (who know can overact and has many times in the past) needed to tone down his chomping on the drapes that were flying all over the place in this film. "8 1/2 out of ten stars. Lee Yeoung-ae who is a soap opera star in her native South Korea gives an outstanding performance as a young women imprisoned for a crime she did not necessarily commit. This film shows Park Chan-Wook coming of age in his use of music (damnit where can I get a copy of that exquisite score. . . and yes, I've tried YesAsia and it is sold out, double damnit). And of his shot choice, each scenes seems to meld into the next without a blink of this viewer's eye. The Region Three DVD I rented though was a bit muddy in the darker scenes but it is a slight quibble. The film along with a number of others recently seems to be the start of an avalanche of revenge genre films coming out of South Korea (I wonder what that says!) That said, great overall, though you may be leaving the room during the penultimate scene, where (SPOILER) each of the parents take their revenge on the real murderer. " [More]

"Off the top of my head here are a few: SPOILERS ABOUNDThe Usual Suspects - Keyser Soze unfolding his body and walking into Kobayashi's car. Touch of Evil - the guy was guilty all along ("he was some man")The Seven Samurai - "it was the farmers who won"When I return, I should have a few that (and you know what I mean, ladies and germs) turn your head around (redeeming another otherwise mediocre film). "Le Samurai - Alain Delon in the darkness of his one bedroom hovel, his cigarette smoke swirling around him, rising from the bottom of the frame, the one expression on his face firmly stamped in.Goodfellas - - "Ever since I was young, I wanted to be a gangster." Touch of Evil - "Was it thrown in or was it planted?" " [More]

"Just saw Once over here in San Diego. Funny you should compare it to a Dogme film; perhaps Italian for Beginners with music now comes to mind. The soundtrack was effective though; the theatre sold out here. " [More]

"I also have an interest in screenwriting though it has been some time since I have done so.Going through each draft of a screenplay is tough, man. Boy, good times, good times (as I remember them).Even though we go through are daily lives doing whatever, we are, I agree, storytellers in some respect, whether it be telling a worn out joke or trying to place an order and not having the other person understand what you have just said. Oh, and by the way, I am introducing myself as well. Here in semi-sunny San Diego. Takes a deep bow. " [More]
