Millions

"Danny Boyle's Millions could easily have been the typical treacle we've become accustomed to seeing from the major studios. A story about a couple of young brothers, their recently widowed father and a new house sounds to me like either the set up for a generic horror movie or an awful manipulative tear-jerker on Lifetime. But add Boyle's technical flair, a stray bag stuffed with thousands of stolen British pounds, a crew of saintly apparitions and an absolute knockout performance by Alex Etel as the younger brother Damian and you have the amazing final product that is Millions. Irreverent but never disrespectful, the film deals primarily with Damian's struggle to do what is right. Missing his mother, who was his moral guide, he turns to historic saints for advice. Their appearances are some of the film's many highlights (though those easily offended will, no doubt, be offended) from St. Peter's retelling of the fish and loaves miracle to St. Joseph's em ... Sunshine

"I am a big Danny Boyle fan. Trainspotting, 28 Days Later and Millions are among my favorite movies so it was with great anticipation that I went to see Sunshine. I hadn't read any reviews (purposely) so I wasn't entirely sure what to expect. The trailer makes it seem as if it is a sci-fi horror/thriller type of thing but the first half of the movie is a much more sedate 2001 experience. It is beautifully shot and set up and there is a slow tension that builds as the crew of the ship heads toward its destination. There is a shift in tone though and the movie becomes much more conventional (in story) and far more active (in direction). There are many similarities to Event Horizon in the final act but they are done to better effect in that movie. I enjoyed it despite its flaws. the acting is good and in some parts great. Cillian Murphy, as always, shines and Chris Evans, Michele Yeoh and Rose Byrne are solid. I am ever impressed with directors who can cross genres convincingly ... " [More]
Cocaine Cowboys

"Cocaine Cowboys is a fascinating look at the history of the cocaine trade in Miami. Beginning in the 70s and bringing the story up to today, the documentary showcases revealing interviews with several of the players responsible for bringing cocaine to the US and the police that were trying to stop it. It is bloody, funny, engrossing and completely and totally absorbing. The stories told are so completely over the top that if it wasn't true, it would be utterly preposterous. The interviews are cut quickly together to create a frenetic feel which jives perfectly with the subject matter. Fantastic! " [More]
The Final Cut

"The Final Cut is another in a long line (and getting longer) of crappy Robin Williams movies. I was sort of intrigued when this first came out, added it to my netflix queue and forgot about it. I denied my instinct to delete it when it finally made it to the top of the list and two hours later, I wish I had followed that instinct. The story surrounds Williams, an editor of videos created by implants in people's heads. The implants record their entire life which is cut up upon their death and the good parts are shown at their funeral. And by good parts, I don't mean the good parts but only those that make them look like the kind, decent and loving person everyone is pretending they were. In any case, Williams gets mixed up in a plot to take down the company, has some undefined relationship with Mira Sorvino and is haunted by a nightmarish childhood memory of his own. The movie plays briefly with a couple of interesting ideas (how knowing that your life is being recorded can ... " [More]
