"SHAWNMONEY - Nice list! Let me echo "Round Midnight," which I saw for the first time about 3 months ago. Not to pick nits, but I would sayd that "Amadeus" might count as a (highly fictionalized) "biographical" film.I saw "Once" at a screening in Chicago where writer/director John Carney was in attendance for a Q&A and Glen Hansard and Marketa Irglova were there and conducted a brief performance on vocals and acoustic guitar. It was a great experience. While a few of the grainy digital shots were a bit difficult to sit through, I really think that "Once" and the music contained therein was a gift that I am really thankful for. It is rare to see a movie that is so immediate and unsentimental that also is so uplifting. Also, the music was lovely and really well-performed. "Once" is also one of the better screen portrayals of the actual creative process. Often films about art (whether music, painting, sculpture, or whatever) seem to skip over the sometimes painful process o ... " [More]

"[SPOILERS (? -- FOR LACK OF A BETTER TERM) DISCUSSED HERE] You didn't ruin it for me. I saw it and liked it tremendously. The three main "twists:" 1) death of the father, 2) end of the son's first romantic relationship, and 3) the affair were not really disclosed. Moreover, even if they had been the drama in the film comes not from the "shock" of these events, but rather from the manner in which the characters deal with them. No problems with your reviews. FWIW, I thought that Kal Penn didn't always quite carry his dramatic weight -- he needed a little more direction -- but he was generally pretty good. But virtually everybody else in the movie was fantastic. Hard to tell an intergenerational story across 2 continents any better than Mira Nair did in this film. " [More]

"On a less-than all-time list "opposites attract" list, I would mention the mismatched pairing between the main protagonists in the Alex de la Iglesia film, "El Crimen Ferpecto."Guillermo Toledo's ambitious lothario Rafael and Monica Cervera's homely but devoted (and ultimately more devious) Lourdes were a very memorable screen pairing. Again, I wouldn't list it as an all-time great, but it is worth checking out. http://www.metacritic.com/film /titles/perfectcrime?q=ferpect oAlso, I rather like the pairing (and they are, in some ways, truly opposite) of "Guy" and "Girl" in the new digital indie flick, "Once."http://www.metacritic.c om/film/titles/once?q=Once " [More]

"Adam and Sam -- FYI sent an e-mail to you with most of the same content -- and an unrelated question -- under my real name.I think your lists were great -- I loved the fact that you included Harold & Maude -- but you really did overlook some outstanding movies. My list of additions would include, in no particular order:ADAMS RIB -- a screwball comedy, no doubt, bu it also contains some real emotional turns and the characters meaningfully demonstrate different approaches to the law and fundamentally different points of view about human nature, all wrapped up in Tracy and Hepburn's great "opposites attract" chemistry. This is, by the way, coming back to Chicago at the Music Box, very soon.RUSHMORE -- arguably the second-or-third best coming of age comedy made in the United States (Breaking Away, anybody? -- maybe that's a topic for another list), there is an attraction and a chemistry between Jason Schwartzman's youthful, impulsive, yet strangely adult Max Fischer ...
