"Your Criterion dreams may come true if Aronofsky has anything to say about it. Apparently he was less than pleased with Warner’s issue of the Fountain to DVD, feeling slighted that they skimped on the extras and declined on his offer to put a commentary on the disk. He is campaigning for Criterion to license a pressing of the film, fully loaded and including the commentary he wants to make. Aronofsky apparently would like the prestige of Criterion editions of Pi and Requiem for a Dream as well, though both have been given generous releases by Artisan. " [More]

"If popularity breeds contempt, the critical beating this movie took endeared it to me all the more. I listened to podcast after podcast and read movie news galore that took pleasure in shredding the movie sight unseen. The biggest bone of contention was that Sharon Stone, over the age of 40, was putting herself out there as sexual being once again, and that she should be put out to pasture. As saddened as I was that in a time when MILF has become part of the popular vernacular this was still a prevailing attitude, it was countered by the excitement of seeing Catherine Trammel on screen again, one of my favorite film characters. She is the devil in red lipstick and took the original Basic Instinct from standard thriller fare and made it a must see, as well making Stone a star. Is Basic Instinct 2 a good movie? Hell no! But it is a fun, fun watch! Stone unhinges her jaw and swallows the scenery, taking Trammel from a temptation-evoking sexual provocateur to a lip-smacking man-eater. ... " [More]

"I agree that Jaws is not overhyped... the reason Jaws is so great is not the special effects, or the action/thriller sequences, it's because we care so much about the characters that we do not want to see their demise, even at the "jaws" of a fake looking shark. When Quint, Brody and Hooper bond over drinks and compare scars, as Quint tells the story of the USS Indianapolis, we bond with them and the scares and thrills at the end of the movie are because of our wanting them to survive. The views of the shark up to that point are quick and measured, after that, seeing that the shark is kinda hacky is forgivable. As far as it being inferior to the novel; can any movie be as good as the imagination of the reader? Arguments about the film vs the book is moot, as the film is an adaptation of the book, “based” on the book, and liberties are always taken. Rarely is there a literal translation from page to screen, and even if there were the reader would always quibble &ldq ... " [More]

I grew up in a small rural town in southern Saskatchewan (population 500) which was the possessor of the only movie theatre in a sixty mile radius which became the gateway drug to my movie addiction. Advancing technology took over as my pusher as the VCR and Satellite Dish satiated my need for a wider variety of films to consume. At seventeen I left for the big city (um, Moose Jaw, Saskatchewan – yes, it really exists!) and after high school got a job in a video store that fed my two-movie-a-day habit. "I had always thought of George C. Scott a hacky actor. He was always so BIG in everything he was in, and you were always aware that he was ACTING. But in the early 80s he found himself a niche… tormented father, a part he played with so much sensitivity here as a man of God wondering through Godless territory in search of his daughter who never returned home with her church group when they made a trip to LA. The anguish he conveys when faced with the truth about his daughters fate is powerful and heartbreaking. (Scott played a Father with a missing child of a different sort in The Changeling very effectively as well). Season Hubley (Mrs. Kurt Russell at the time) is great as well as his tour guide through the seedy underworld of sin he had only heard of before. Schrader is always a capable director with a great sense of style (American Gigolo, Cat People, Patty Hearst, The Comfort of Strangers). " [More]

"In a word... Titanic! The biggest turd to fall out of the ass of Hollywood in decades! How did it win Best Picture? I am just getting to the point where i can stand to see DeCaprio in a movie again. "Easily, my Alien Quadrilogy! Two disks per movie, two editions per movie, bonus disk of extras, beautiful packaging. These are some of my favorites films, but Fox went over-the-top when putting this collection together and as far as I am concerned set a benchmark no other collection has even come close to achieving before or since. The work put into Alien 3 alone rivals anything Criterion has done.My Criterion edition of Videodrome would be worth a burn or two as well.From all i have heard the upcoming Blade Runner special edition is going to be a necessity, especially if the include all three versions (Original Theatrical, Extended Cut and Director's Cut).
