Re:M. Night Shyamalan: Relevant ...
By GradysGhost in HORROR MOVIES 101
"[quote user="indieabby88"] I don't think there's much to think about here, in my opinion. Shyamalan (or as my mother likes to call him, "shyamalama-ding-dong") had already outstayed his welcome when "Lady in the Water" came out (anyone else see the lame accompanying picture book?), and "The Happening" was just a joke. It seems this guy thinks he's the next great director--I guess all that buzz about Hitchcock that came out around "The Sixth Sense" went to his head about as fast as a hit of heroin--and, actually, I think this may be the case. However, I wouldn't compare him to Hitchcock. Not in the least. If anything, this guy is a George Lucas. He's got concepts, yes, as well as a good visual sense. But can he write? No. Can he accept the fact that he can't write? No. That's my story and I'm sticking to it. [/quote] Abby, I couldn't agree more. I would add that his "style" is self-replicating. He doesn't bother exploring, only allows himself to keep doing the same damn thing he di ... " [More]
Re:Top 5 weirdest movies
By GradysGhost in Top 5
"[quote user="seely"] Hm, so many of the ones I would pick have already been picked. Theres a few notables missing, however. One of the all-time weirdest: The Fountain Darren Aronofsky (sp?) at his weirdest. I would try to explain it, but I'm not sure I can anymore. If you're interested, I reviewed it here. Requiem for a Dream Same director as Pi and the Fountain. The really trippy drug induced fantasies and hallucinations, plus the steady downward spiral of all the characters in this film make it a weird one. Fantasia Satan. Mickey Mouse. Pluto. Wizards. Demons. Nuff said. Me and You and Everyone We Know I saw this one twice and still can't really figure out quite what it is about. I've heard a wide range of theories. All I know is there is a 5 year old making out with a 35 year old woman, and he's obsessed with 'pooping back and forth forever'. Is it a metaphor? Is it funny? I don't really know. Stranger than Fiction / The Science of Sleep I don't know why, but I always ... " [More]

"Haven't been to Spout in ages. I should get back into this. I always had fun before... Anyway... My vote goes to Lost in Translation. Murray is perfect here. Spot on. And it was this movie in which he showed his amazing talent for dramatic acting. It blends with his comedy so well. This movie shows how love really works, and it's one of my all-time favorites. Runner up goes to Broken Flowers, but The Life Aquatic is one of those movies (along with everything else Wes Anderson has done except for Bottle Rocket) that I just can't like, no matter how much I try. "I'm not dead! I just disappeared... again... Sorry. I'm in the middle of trying to move from San Antonio to Austin and my wife is trying to get a job up there and it's tough work living between cities, even if they're only sixty miles apart.Anyway, those guys on the Filmspotting boards are pretty good at that game, and I don't know where they get the frames, either. I guess there's always Google Image Search, but I don't know how they capture the individual frames (unless they take them from their DVDs).As far as your movie goes, I haven't a clue what movie that is. I'm afraid I haven't brushed up on my non-European foreign films. I have Seven Samurai laying around the house, but it's really hard for me to decide to watch a three and a half-hour long movie. So I guess that's my best guess.Seven Samurai? " [More]

"On IMDb, minionembraced said: "I went to see this film expecting a cheesy scifi-ish hollywood production, filled with all sorts of plot holes and continuity errors. I got just what I expected, with one exception. Dont get me wrong, I dont mind seeing those kind of movies, I usually enjoy just about anything scifi. I enjoyed this movie for what it was. my one problem..... I have noticed more frequently in films that "faith-based" or "christian" characters are being used as villians in films. the mist(christian), the golden compass(faith-based), and now this film jumper(christian). maybe I just didnt notice it before or maybe it is becoming more common. either way I am growing tired of this 'trend' and am hoping to see more films with faith based heroes or christian heroes. Finally I am sure there are films with heroes of the type I would like to see. I may just be going to see the wrong movies." jbozzz immediately responded: art i ... " [More]

Top 5 Tear Jerking Scenes
By GradysGhost in Top 5
"I know I already posted my initial five, but I've come up with four more that make my cut.Two scenes in particular from Big Fish stand out to me. First, when Ewan McGregor's wife thinks he's died in the war, since the men in the army vehicle told her he went MIA, and then his sillhoette (sp?) appear behind the sheets being hung out to dry and out walks Ewan McGregor. This is the result of a combination of an excellently-told story and Danny Elfman's tremendous score. At the end of the same movie (and I think this one's been mentioned already), when Billy Crudup tells Albert Finney the story of how he dies and you get that he finally understands his father in those final minutes of Finney's life.Next, in Stand By Me, River Pheonix tells the story of how he was punished for stealing the class's milk money when it was really the cafeteria lady who did it, knowing full well all the blame would fall on River because of his family's reputation. Classic, ... " [More]

"Now it's my turn to blaspheme. But before I go there, let me say that I agree on the point of Vertigo. I couldn't even make it through the movie once, but I'm determined to do so before I die, fully realizing that I have no valid argument against any movie until I've actually watched it.And allow me to defend Eternal Sunshine, one of my all-time faves and the comment that was made about it being all gimmick (or magic tricks, I think it was called) and no coherent storyline. I would offer up the idea that the rush-rush pulling and pushing from one whacked-out set to another is an essential part of the storytelling. For the bulk of the movie, we're actually inside Joel Barish's mind, which is being changed and erased as the story unfolds. Here's a couple:The Godfather -- I just don't see what everyone else sees. I actually find this movie to be boring. Maybe it's just because it's been built up, or maybe its because I knew in advance that ... " [More]

"Hey! Sorry I disappeared off the face of the blogosphere for awhile. I've been working my ass off and wasting what little free time I have playing Metroid Prime 3: Corruption on my Wii. I can't not do it. Rest assured, I will post the answer the instant I come up with it, though it doesn't sound familiar so I may not have seen it. Glad you guys are enjoying the game. " [More]

"I agree with pippin06 on the vast majority of his points.I kinda see Shyamalan as the new Joel Schumacher. Shall we compare?Schumacher's Flatliners -- A fun movie with an eye for grandiosity about death and the afterlife, whatever it is. It turns into a sort of horror flick with heart as the film wears on. The characters find themselves haunted by the horrors they've commited themselves, but find redemption in the act of apology.Compare to Shyamalan's The Sixth Sense -- A really fun movie with a focus on the individual about death and the afterlife, whatever it is. In the end it's remembered as a horror film, but it has a sort of heart as well. A small child brings realization to a middle-aged man who never realized he'd actually passed away, and brings a sort of redemption to his mother who always doubted her own mother.Schumacher's The Lost Boys -- This makes for one hell of a popcorn flick and it's got a popular cast: The Two Coreys (as they are ...
