Funny Girl/Stranger Than Fiction

"These are the 2 movies I watched this weekend. An odd coupling, but those are often the best kinds.I got up at 7 on Friday to start working from home and decided to watch Funny Girl while I worked. I have had this movie since January and never watched and figured there was no better then then right now. I did like the movie, but that's about it. Barbra was great, but everyone else was, well, eh. Omar Sharif seemed very one-notey in his performance, as did all the other characters. It seems like this movie was written specifically for Babs to get her Oscar and it has no more usage. Stranger Than Fiction is a fabulous movie, for reasons more then what I went in thinking. I had heard the performances were good, and they were, and I can even see a slight use for the Queen Latifah character, when many others couldn't. I love the visions Forster had for this film and feel he accomplished everything he set out to do. He made a thorough picture with a solid plot that had r ... " [More]

The Last King of Scotland

"Today I was able to watch a movie of my choosing, The Last King of Scotland. My husband came in at one point and said he was going to watch it, but after watching, I don't think he would really enjoy it. I liked it, I was totally mesmerized by Forest Whitaker's performance, as I am by most of his performances. I was also impressed by James Mcavoy, although I agree with his being left off the Oscar list. I was also impressed by Kerry Washington, who was underused. The story was interesting, if a little slow. I enjoyed watching the Garrigan's slow decline into that murky moral place we all fear. Overall, this movie is definitely worth seeing, even if it won't find its way onto my favorites list. I just found some parts out of place and stripping the story of its buoyancy. It is a great achievement for MacDonald, in his first non-documentary film. " [More]

Lord of War

"So tonight I decided I wanted to watch a movie with my husband. You have to understand, that's not the easiest thing for us, since we don't have a couch. I know that sounds trivial, but it really affects things when one person gets to sit in a chair and the other has to sit on a beanbag chair/floor. Needless to say, movie watching in our home is usually done singly. So I let my husband scroll through our various On Demand channels and what did he pick...some esoteric art flick or movie we've seen before but love...no, he picks Lord of War, the one movie I specifically said I didn't want to see. Did he do this on purpose, probably not. So I've been captive for the past 2 hours to a movie that rambles, has no character development whatsoever, and features the degridation of career that had serious possibilities, that of Nic Cage, and possibly Ethan Hawke. I love movies, all kinds, but not ones that try to say something, but don't say it well. That' ... " [More]
