"Milk joins some of the other best films of the past year as effectively focusing around one lead performance and a stand-out directorial style. Although it may not be as directly gut-wrenching or funny as Gran Torino or The Wrestler, it takes a fair and captivating approach to a real-life figure that finds a solid balance between documenting history and remaining entertaining. After director Gus Van Sant's previous experience of putting intelligent representations of tragic stories from Kurt Cobain to the Columbine shootings on screen, he was unquestionably the man for the job. Sean Penn, apart from being a talented actor legendary for his gay rights activism, was going to be a tougher sell for me and likely many others. Thankfully, Penn gives probably his best, and certainly his most original performance yet and carries a film that needs his caliber of acting to remain exciting....Read the rest of this critic's review here! The Practical Sex and the City

""Shopaholic" may be about a comedy about an aspiring fashion journalist struggling with large amounts of debt and a shopping addiction, but despite the depressing subject matter during this tough economic time, the film is fun to watch. Isla Fisher proves she can carry a major motion picture on her own, playing the giggly, label obsessed, Rebecca Bloomwood. Though the film is full of unrealistic occurrences where the lead continuously finds her way out of tricky situations with her silly antics, it still, in many ways, is more relatable than most "Sex and the City" episodes...Read the rest of this critic's review here! "I don't have much to say about this film. It was funny and cute at times, all of the cast's performances were good, and there is a relatively happy ending. "Into You" moved along well and there were interesting twists and turns. The cameos from comedians during transitional scenes were random but very funny. You will look forward to them throughout because without them, this romantic comedy would not really be that funny....Read the rest of this critic's review here " [More]

"Given the near 20 years of studio squabbling and failed attempts to translate Alan Moore’s masterpiece to the big screen, Watchmen could have turned out much worse. Zach Snyder somewhat surprisingly sticks incredibly close to the source material, which ends up being the film’s greatest strength and weakness. The two and a half hour spectacle kicks off with a healthy dose of action and an opening credits sequence to Bob Dylan’s The Times They Are a Changin, which is arguably the coolest and richest part of the film. I won’t spoil the surprises, but we get to see what nearly every defining historical and cultural moment of the Cold War era looks like in Moore’s alternate history. The only problem is those who have not read the novel will likely be lost on half the references, a flaw that recurs often throughout the well-layered story...Read the rest of this critic's review here! "If you’ve seen the trailer, read a synopsis, or even heard word-of-mouth a minimal amount of information regarding Taken you know what you are getting into. That is an hour and a half of Liam Neeson kicking ass, predictably but satisfyingly. From the get-go it’s all about him, first setting him up as a sympathetic father who we know will soon be facing much worse...Read the rest of this critic's review here! " [More]
Love for Marley

"I am a sucker for a movie about dog, especially cute, nervous, overly excited puppies that turn into cute, nervous, overly excited dogs. I really liked Grogan's "Marley and Me" when I read it last summer but its hard to say which version was better. The book flowed really well and only took about a day to read but did a great job of keeping me entertained. As can be expected, some elements in the film version were altered, non-existent, or overly exaggerated, which I think is unfortunate and I just can't see the point because all the scenes in the book were so fitting and genuine. "While Phoebe in Wonderland has a very interesting premise, it is a little difficult to decipher what exactly this movie is trying to do. It felt like the director set out to do many things with this movie, but fell short of achieving any of them thoroughly. The movie had a lot of potential to tap into many different themes and ideas, but at the end of the movie, none of them felt complete... Read the full review here! " [More]
Great Original Story!

"This is a very interesting and original plot. The story revolves around an introverted young man, Evan (Bentley), who keeps mainly to himself and woks as a freelance poet for suicidal clients who would like for their last words to be more eloquent than they could produce on their own. Essentially, he is a professional suicide note author. While attending the funeral for one of his previous clients (to evaluate the effectiveness of his note) he meets the deceased’s sister, Charlotte (Ryder). As they begin seeing each other frequently, Evan must go to extensive lengths to keep hidden his occupation. Overall, this original storyline was written well and was enjoyable to follow. I’d highly recommend it, but check out the critic's movie review for yourself. " [More]

"I must say, I was not a fan of this movie. I, admittedly, spend a fair amount of time searching for drug movies that I haven’t seen yet, so I was very excited to come across this one. The premise was a little different than the ones that I’ve seen in the past; for one thing, it’s set in the middle of nowhere. I’ve also never seen a synopsis that focused on how the characters are planning on starting meth creation up as an actual business. Also, although this shouldn’t really affect my opinion of the movie itself, I think that it should be noted that the front cover of this movie is a terrible representation and gives the wrong impression about the movie. Overall, I thought that this was somewhat of a disappointment. But see the movie review for yourself by the critics. " [More]
A Powerful Masterpiece

"This is one of the most powerful, moving, and disturbing movies I have seen in a long time, delving into heavy themes revolving around unattainable dreams and doomed free-thinkers in a conformist society. As a college student, I am a transition in my life in which my aspirations are high, and my motivation to reach them is strong, just as Kate Winslet’s character is at the beginning of the story. It affected me so deeply because it is this tragic and unwanted future that I am trying to avoid. However, I think that this is a movie that anybody, at any stage of their life could connect with, and be affected by, on some level. " [More]

"his awkward title appropriately sets the tone for the quirkiness of this movie. This movie revolves around two characters: a charmingly geeky yet cute movie rental clerk and the girl for whose attention he is vying for: an oddball reclusive young woman who comes into the movie rental store almost daily to rent porn. Their relationship is formed around these movies, initially as the thing that brought them together, then to the movie rental clerk’s excuse to go over to her house (to deliver the movies), then their pastime together. However, there is more to this story than a quirky boy meets girl theme. Despite the charming façade, this movie also deals with heavy subject matter. I commend the writer/director for the mature and intelligent way that it was approached and depicted. Overall, though, it was a fascinating watch of a non-traditional relationship that I would definitely recommend, be sure to check out my other movie reviews for some great movie picks! " [More]

"So, I went into this movie not having read the synopsis, or anything about it for that matter, ahead of time. Admittedly, the beginning had me very interested. A story starts to be woven about a man who, when confronted with a situation in which he had to kill his friends to survive, chose to cut their rope. I was excited and hopeful to see a movie that explored themes such as right and wrong, and the human survival instinct, but, alas, this was just another slasher flick. Granted, it did try to have substance – with the killer trying to prove that anyone, when faced with life or death, will choose life even at the expense of others that they care about – and in the end, a connection was made that clarified some of the motive, but, still… it’s been done before. Please chec out my other movie reviews for great opinions. " [More]
