"Alfred Hitchcock's The Ghost Busters (1955) Dr. Peter Venkman - Cary Grant Dr. Ray Stantz - Jimmy Stewart Dr. Egon Spengler - Gregory Peck Winston Zeddemore - Farley Granger (not a lot of black actors in Hitchcock films, so he'd probably cast someone younger instead) Dana Barrett - Grace Kelly Janine Melnitz - Shirley MacLaine Louis Tully - Hume Cronyn Walter Peck - Norman Lloyd Mayor - Ray Milland Gozer - Kim Novak, in her breakout role (voiced by James Mason) "

Casting Blade Runner (2007)

"I went to go see Blade Runner: The Final Cut on Friday and I haven't been able to get it out of my mind. It's everything we hoped it would be and more! It's almost as if I had never seen it before. If you live near a theatre showing it, I strongly recommend seeing it on the big screen! What struck me the most was that this movie not only had balls for 1982, it has balls for 2007! No one would go near this film today, not without a fight. But anyway, as I was thinking about how well the film holds up today, I started to think about who would be cast in Blade Runner if it were to be made today. This is what I came up with: Deckard: Clive OwenRachael: Natalie PortmanRoy Batty: Cillian MurphyLeon: Michael Clarke DuncanZhora: Rachel Weisz Pris: Jessica AlbaTyrell: James CromwellJ.F. Sebastian: Leland OrserGaff: Peter Stormare "

"Fall is my favorite time of year. Not just because it's the time of year when New York City is at its most beautiful, thus reminding us all why we continue in this abusive relationship with it, but because the movies start to get good again after the onslaught of big-budget blockbusters that are only occasionally watchable. People seem to think that, with each passing year, the movies get worse and worse. Well, if you're looking at crap like Transformers (the new nadir of megahit blockbuster quality), then yeah. But there's a whole crop of ambitious, interesting films that come out every fall and - even if they end up being bad - you have to give them credit for trying. Unlike Transformers. So here's my list of 15 films that I am dying to see this fall. Some are already out (and I'm negotiating with my wife to be able to find the time to see them) and some I still wait in painful anticipation for: 15. American Gangster - Ridley Scott might have actually ... "

"I'm having a weird problem with posting/blogging. For some reason, my posts and blog entries are coming out with no spaces in between paragraphs. I'll go into the HTML code and add line spaces but they don't take. It's pretty irritating. What am I doing wrong? Is it because I'm editing elsewhere and pasting the final draft? Please help! (figures it works now) "

"Rest easy, America. The MPAA is on the job, keeping on the lookout for any cinematic preversions* and branding them as such. Why, just this week, they prevented yet another evil sex movie from getting the opportunity to prevert your children's minds. What film, you ask? Why, Ang "Gay Cowboy movie" Lee's latest film, entitled Lust, Caution. You might have heard your 9-year-old talking about it for months now, begging you to take them to see it. And it's understandable. I mean, a movie set in Shanghai during World War II, entirely in Mandarin AND WITH SUBTITLES?! Is it even possible for them to try to draw the kids in any more than they already have? But what the action-packed trailer doesn't tell you is that the movie has lots and lots of sex in it. I'm not talking about regular man-on-woman sex. I'm talking about man-on-woman preverted sex! Like in positions much different from (and more acrobatic than) the one you were in when you conceive ... "I really can't find the right words to describe how I felt after seeing Gus Van Sant's Elephant. "Violated" isn't quite right, nor is "manipulated," which I think has a negative connotation. It's a disturbing film, which has left many of its viewers feeling violated and/or manipulated but those adjectives are much too superficial to explain how it made me feel. Without a doubt, this anatomy of a school shooting, loosely based on the Columbine tragedy, is one of the most bold and brilliant American films made this decade. But I can't say that I liked it. I think it's well-made and I recommend it highly. It's just wrong to say that you like a film like this. The title of the film itself is as much a topic of discussion as its content. The official answer is that Elephant was the title of a short about killings in Ireland and Van Sant named his film after that. That original short took its name from the adage, "the elephant in ... "5. There's Something About Mary/Meet the Parents - I don't really hate these movies but I have no desire to see either one again and they deserve to be singled out for what they have wrought in their paths. For all their "shock" humor value, neither film is that funny. In fact, between these two being big hits and the success of "Friends," which thrived entirely on the premise that a funny dialogue all depends on the inflections with which it is being said, lowered America's expectations for comedy in the 21st century.4. The Illusionist - I was extraordinarily bothered by Ridley Scott's Matchstick Men, not because it was poorly made or poorly acted or anything like that, but because it was painfully obvious to me from about five minutes in who was zooming whom. I had a much deeper reaction to The Illusionist. Not only was it easy to figure out where you were supposed to start looking for the twist (because of course there was one) but again, I figured out who w ... "

"5. Knocked Up - For laughs, I think I'd go with The 40 Year Old Virgin over this, but this is a much better film. Until they fail me, I will see anything Judd Apatow writes/directs and anything that Seth Rogen even so much as visited the set of.4. Hot Fuzz - I had high expectations and they were met. If I had a softer spot for balls-out action movies than I do for zombie flicks, this would replace Shaun of the Dead for me. 3. 28 Weeks Later - I seem to be comparing each movie to another movie but it's for good reason. This was a big surprise to me. I may still prefer the original but the new director managed to make a more harrowing film than the original. 28 Days Later was great fun and lots of scares. 28 Weeks Later managed to make me wish that the film was over, not because I thought it was bad but because it was so intense. The script could have made a mess of a movie (especially with it being so heavy-handed in its message) but Fresnadillo's directing makes ... "

"Ah, that quintessential paradox. Does it cease to be art if it makes money? Or should it go one step further: does it cease to be art if it is simply accessible enough to make money? In order to make money, it must be entertaining on some level. And the word "entertainment" is what needs to be examined here. There seems to be a common misconception that being entertained is a passive endeavor. Not so; if that were the case, then we would be entertained by literally anything that occupied our time. The very nature of our acknowledgement of whether something is entertaining is an active one. So, something that requires even the least amount of thought still requires some thought. So there's no reason to think that its commercial potential is even a factor because (and I'm aware that this is starting to become less true with the advent of youtube) if you're seeing it anywhere, it's a product. Because someone put money into it in order to make some money back do ... "

"No children's movies. No fish out of water. No repeats of Adam and Sam. 5. Barton Fink (John Turturro) in Barton Fink - Few people fit in anywhere less than a writer with integrity does in Hollywood.4. Colin Smith (Tom Courtenay) from The Loneliness of the Long Distance Runner - I just saw this one for the first time last week. Really underrated movie. It's almost an English twist on The 400 Blows. However, instead of sharing Antoine's ability to make a mess out of good intentions, Colin has the talent to fit into the system but chooses to remain outside it at all costs. A self-made misfit but a misfit nonetheless.3. Stroszek (Bruno S.) in Stroszek - I only saw this film for the first time recently. Bruno is an alcoholic, released from prison, gets involved with a prostitute, is terrorized by her pimp, moves with her and his neighbor to America, and watches his hopes of living the American Dream go right down the tubes.2. David (Haley Joel Osment) from A.I.: Arti ... "

"It was better than the entirety of Transformers, that's for sure.I don't know. It has potential. But I fear that the marketing campaign will be better than the movie. And I fear that too much information has been dug up about it. I caught a preview of Transformers the week before it was released, so no one was buzzing about the trailer before I saw it. And the trailer blew me away. Not since (coincidentally) the trailer for Blair Witch had I been so floored. I spend so much time reading up on upcoming movies and such that it almost never happens that I don't hear of a movie before I see its trailer. This one... no clue at all and I was shocked I hadn't heard of it. I wish Paramount had been able to keep a tighter lid on it and made sure that no information leaked out to the public at all. January 18 is a long way away... so much time for people to dig up every last spoiler for the movie. Once the test screening reviews start popping up, the novelty will wear off before an ... "
