Re:Top 5 Overrated Movies

"

It's fun to read over threads sometimes. Geez, I talk a lot. Anyway, flair, your disdain for Scorsese aside (because I was generally feeling non-love for the oh so insane one, but correct me if I'm wrong), I liked this choice (Closer). I know a lot of people who like this movie, and I just could not get into it, for the same reasons (though, I doubt I put them so eloquently). And I've never heard of The Hospital. Not that I'm any benchmark, but has anyone else heard of it (save for Rizzo) and thinks it's overrated? I think if something is going to be overrated, it has to be, you know, not obscure, so I'm trying to find out if it's really that obscure or not.
and Risselada wrote: After watching Network recently and watching all of the DVD features I learned about Paddy Chayefsky and The Hospital was mentioned a few times. I'm wondering if you share similar sentiments about the Network script. Taking these in sequence: 1) Yes, Pippin, ... "

"Any reason why this list of Top 10 Scene stealers took a turn toward testosterone? Here's some women who stand out even in strong casts: For redress, here's: 1) Emily Blunt in The Devil Wears Prada (2006) 2) Sarah Polley in Go (1999) 3) Arsinée Khanjian in The Sweet Hereafter (1997) 4) Kerry Washington in The Dead Girl (2006) 5) Jenny Seagrove in Local Hero (1983) 6) Winona Ryder in Beetlejuice (1988) 7) Cher in Silkwood (1983) 8) Jane Birkin in La Belle Noiseuse (1991) 9) Natasha Richardson in A Month in the Country (1987) 10) Christina Hendricks in anything, including Firefly: Serenity, Part 1 (2002) "

Gangs of New York

"1) Gangs of New York (2002) As Pippin points out, in the land of overrated Scorsese, there are plenty of choices. But this represents the apogee: a meticulously researched, carefully staged, beautifully filmed, soulless, empty-headed, costume drama variation on all his other celebrations of violence. No matter how compelling the characters and intriguing their stories, Scorsese always manages to miss their heart. That's forgivable in rubbish like "Goodfellas" or a cartoon like "The Departed," where we know he's just filling time between spasms of bloodshed. But consider the resources that went into recreating this vanished world, only for Marty to once again fail at Storytelling 101. In an earlier era, Scorsese would be the batty uncle in the attic. Today, he's an award-winning director. Who says there's been no progress in the treatment of the mentally ill? 2) In the Bedroom (2001) Anyone who has ever lost a family member through crime, and struggled through the resulting legal pr ... "

3. Amelie
Boooooooooo!!! I love this one and everything else by Juenet. The rest of the list I can't disagree with but mine would look more like: 1. Platoon - Hamburger Hill was better........... trust me. 2. Goodfellas/Casino/Taxi Driver - I didn't really get into a Scorsese film until The Departed. These others were OK, but that's about it. If it weren't for Oliver Stone, Martin Scorsese would be the most overrated director. 3. Shakespeare In Love - this was when I stopped watching or caring about the Oscars 4. Gladiator - see No. 3 - And I actually liked Black Hawk Down better for a Ridley Scott film. 5. Shawshank Redemption - This one was clever but c'mon. No. 1 on IMDB's top 250 list is just ridiculous.
leeroy, I think you are harsh on Scorsese, and he didn't only make those three flicks prior to the Departed. In the land of overrated for Scorsese, I submit Gangs of New York and T ... "

"This is not intended to be as snarky as it probably reads, but looking down this column of movie posters, it's remarkable how many terrible films are listed. I say that even though I've seen most of them and enjoyed many. But when Linda Fiorentino has to be moved over from film noir, the proper category for devious _ but by no means kick-ass _ Wendy/Bridget, you know the pickings are slim in this genre. Nevertheless, here's a few that deserve attention: Terminator (1984) Linda Hamilton as a regular woman becoming kick-ass. Honorable mention to Kristanna Loken for the lesser T3. House of Flying Daggers (2004) Astoundingly beautiful, with astoundingly beautiful assassin Zhang Ziyi. Serenity (2005) Even before becoming a Terminator, Summer Glau was a very, very dangerous person. Why are there links to Firefly but not its movie, or is this now supposed to be Firefly Part 2? Innocent Blood (1992) Anne Parillaud, the original Femme Nikita, blazes through the very, very narrow c ... "

"Cute. Mild. Talkative. Conventional. White. Bourgeoisie. Tease. Chuckles. If these words aren't already in the tag cloud for Young People Fucking, you should go over them while deciding whether to watch it. There is a plot, but the real set-up is this: pals Martin Gero and Aaron Abrams developed a mild sex comedy, the kind the French watch over petit déjeuner. For a laugh, they decided to slap a flamboyant title on it. Ha-ha, Aaron and Martin laughed. Ha-ha, they laughed, all the way to the poorhouse. Their decision turned their little trifle of a script into a cause celebre in Ottawa, triggering a debate over government funding for the arts. Meanwhile, in the moviehouses, mainstream audiences were scared off. In the fundamentalist US, the box office approached five figures. On the other hand, hard-core audiences found nothing to get excited about. In fairness, it's always easier to identify other people's self-destructive decisions than one's own. In fact, if y ... "

Avengers: The Quick-Quick-Slow Death

[Be the first to tell us!]
"`The Quick-Quick-Slow Death' isn't necessarily the best episode of `The Avengers,' but is a good example of the high style and high spirits of the series. Some viewers may find it too campy, but it's the closest thing to surrealism in TV serial form of anything but `The Twilight Zone,' and generally in better humour. In the opening, a man is pushing a pram along a crowded street. It rolls away from him, at unexpectedly high speed, and when it overturns there's a dead man inside. No, none of this is remotely plausible, but it is exciting and strikingly inventive. Right from the start, you realize this isn't the usual police procedural. Fortunately, unusual investigators are near to hand. Patrick Macnee as suave spy/counterspy John Steed and Diana Rigg as posh tomboy Emma Peel sort through the usual Avengers-style clues: rented evening wear, a message on a garlic sausage, a rose tattoo, a delivery of shoes. Our heroes investigate in their charmingly aggressive fashion. ... "
