  • Vantage Point Fails to Deliver

    Vantage Point  (2008)

Vantage Point starts with a bang and delivers fairly through the first half of its running. However, after the initial cool factor wears off of the different view points from the same story, you are left with a lackluster thriller that fails to make any type of impact with its audience. I have some key concerns with the story arc of the movie, and although I applaud the plot device used for progressing the twists and turns any thriller delivers, it doesn't make up for the bland and flawed narrative. Let me argue for one second from the believability standpoint of the movies climax. Warning: this borders on potential spoilers, so if you have not watched this, you may not want to read any farther. If I am a villain who is a known assassin/terrorist, and through this narrative I am willing to kill 1,000’s of innocent lives to accomplish my goals, there is no damn way I am going to swerve out of the way of one stupid little girl who wanders onto the road, especially when I have the damned president in the back of my vehicle. How lame is that? Suddenly for no known reason I grow a heart over one little girl? After I just killed so many other people? Its things like this that pisses me off with Hollywood. Do they think we’re to dumb to catch that major character flaw? It took a solid movie and turned it into garbage within five minutes. Whatever, I would watch the first hour of the movie, just for the interesting plot device used, then turn it off and write your own ending in your head.

Here's the thing with The Brothers Solomon, when the humor is on, its hits a perfect bullseye. The problem is, when its off it totally misses the target all together. I found myself laughing hysterically or asking how certian scenes made it through the editing process. Thats the problem because its equally split in half between the two very far ends of this spectrem. Will Forte and Will Arnett remind me of a new aged version of Dumb and Dumber, but just can't quite live up to the precident set by Carey and  Daniels. Its definitly worth a watch however, especially now that its out on DVD for rental.

    Cloverfield  (2008)

Cloverfield was an intense thrill ride that manages to stay fresh throughout its entirety. I do have some personal problems with the overall story arc revolving the ending. I can’t help but to feel this type of ending is becoming rapidly clichéd, and on a personal level I’m getting tired of it. I don’t want to tread too far into spoiler alert, so we can leave it at that.

Despite this notion, I still think the movie itself is a must see. The first person experience with the handheld camera works wonders with building up the intensity and overall gritty feel of the atmosphere that helps the movie suck you as a viewer in. I honestly felt as if I was there running through the streets of New York with a giant monster roaming about after me. It was definitely a unique experience that was handled with perfection. I really feel this movie took the tried and true monster movie formula and reinvented it. Kudos!

No Country for Old Men is one of those movies I tell my friends that you’ll either love or hate. To be honest, I’m not sure how to go about writing this review. As a writer -and an avid movie watcher- I like movies/stories that take different routes, and aren’t afraid to take the road less traveled. I usually scream with joy when I see something unravel in front of my eyes that seem fresh and new. No Country for Old Men uses this technique when it comes to the overall story arc. The problem is, as a viewer who paid money to watch it, I feel cheated. Hell, I was damn right angry.

Let me digress and explain, (I wont go into any details that will ruin the story for those who have not watched it {I hate spoilers}) but lets say you pay your hard earned money to follow a story arc about two people, and for some reason the story takes a sudden jerk from the conventional path (something normally I would praise, as conventional anything is just another phrase for stale and unoriginal) and when you meet back up with the two people, something very drastically has occurred and you the viewer got to witness nothing but the aftermath. I was pissed. In fact this was the only movie I had ever watched where the entire movie theater booed the ending.  WTF?

I understand the argument that the movie was not centered on these two men batling, but rather around the old man who narrates and his struggle with finding his place in a new strange world. And i will admit Jones was amazing in his role.

This is where I am torn. This movie was fantastic for the first three-fourth of it. It’s filled with action and well timed humor, the subtle type of humor that does not neglect the seriousness of the situation, and is dark enough to feel real. The characters are so well played and created that I wasn’t even sure who I wanted to route for, despite one being much more vile and evil then the other.

If this movies last half hour had been portrayed differently, this easily would have been one of the best movies I have seen in years, up there with Pans Labyrinth even. Unfortunately, I can’t get past that one scene. If you’ve seen this flick, then I’m sure you know what I’m speaking of.

That’s all I have for N.C.F.O.M. I’m sorry if this review seems a little bit on the rambling side, I had a really hard time writing it and trying to explain the sequence of events without spoiling anything. In a nut shell, if you fell under all the hype this movie garnered, then just ready yourself for potential disappointment.

    Running Scared  (2006)

Paul Walker? Seriously? Personally this guy is not one of my favorite actors. At least he wasn't until I saw him star in this action pact blood soaked thrill ride that is "Running Scared". I felt that same with Josh Hartnett before Lucky Number Slevin. I love it when these pretty boy actors get raw and dirty and prove their worth by breaking their cast-types, kudos for them. Now back to the movie. "Running Scared" has probably the most intense opening sequence I've seen in a movie ever. Unfortunately it draws itself thin at times, but this is minor and only slightly takes away from the over all experience. The movie follows Walker's character around as he tries to hunt down a gun that was used to knock off a few dirty cops. The catch is that it's tied to his son's best friend who has been abused and on the run. Find the kid and supposedly find the gun, this is the movies driving force in a nut shell. The story branches off from Walker to the kid, to Walker's wife at different times as the three meet up with basically the worst human beings alive. Seriously we get corrupted cops, violent middle-aged pimps, drug lords, hockey players with ties to the mafia, and my personal favorite; the kiddie porn/ serial killers who happen to be a happily married couple. Seriously this movie is not just insanely violently, but all around quite disturbing. All in a good way might I add. It reminds me of Tarintino's early works with Reservoir Dogs meeting Pulp Fiction. In the end, give Walker a chance, and I promise you, you will walk away not only from a great movie, but with a new found respect for Walker.

  • A perfect no brainer comedy.

    Grandma's Boy  (2006)

Maybe its because I am too a video game fanatic, or maybe its just the pure enjoyment I get from watching Allen Covert and Nick Swardson play their respected roles with perfection, but I can't help but to walk away from this movie every time with a huge smile across my face. Mark my words, its been a far too long a wait for Allen Covert to get his chance to step out of Sandler's shadow, and Swardson in my opinion has the talent to be the next Will Ferrell. Every scene Swardson is in is hilarious, its unfortunate to me that when Covert does finally get his chance Swardson steals the spotlight. Let's not forget another one of my favorite up and coming actors, Jonah Hill. Grandma's Boy is ripe with future talented actors and I can't wait to see where they go next. I hope Covert pulls a Sandler and at least keeps these two guys in with some form of cameo for his next flick. Now that I'm done boasting about the actors let me get to the goods. Grandma's Boy is ripe with laughter, the kind of laughter that relies heavily on wiener and fart jokes, the kind of humor that fans of Kevin Smith would love. Grandma's Boy does lack the sheer wittiness and deeper meanings of the Smiths flicks, but it picks up its slack with the pureness of its often-crude humor. There are so many scenes I loved I couldn't even pick just one example if I tried. Basically if you like Adam Sandler earlier movies then this will be right up your alley. It is worth the three bucks it costs to rent, trust me.

Stranger Then Fiction is a fabulous tale that is a must see for anyone who claims to have movie integrity. Will Ferrell shines with his role, proving he is much more then just a few hefty laughs, although I'm sure you will let out a chuckle here and there as well. I'm not much of a fan of writing synopsis' while I'm writing a movie critique, so I wont go into the plot details, I will say that I loved the meta-fictional technique used to pull this story along. It is witty, funny, dramatic, and inspiring, a perfect example of dramedy. The characters are flawlessly sketched out and I would find it hard to believe if you didn’t at least somewhat become emotionally attached to Ferrell's character. As a writer myself I can see a side of this movie that I'm sure the majority of its viewers did not. Often times when writing, especially longer narratives, the peoples and lives you create are not merely fictional, as they truly do seem to become "alive". These characters become one with the author, and often times I find myself responsible for their actions, much like in this movie where the character she created is actually alive and breathing. This sense of responsibility can be quite strong and dually touching. Bravo!

  • Surprisingly much more then a mediocre action flick!

    Doom  (2005)

Let me start by saying I have only played a little of the doom franchise, most notably Doom 3. So writing this review I won't be heavily relating it towards the games, as I don't know that much about them to compare. I will say that I heard a lot of negative feedback about this flick and that I don't feel like it's getting the recognition it deserves. I also feel that once a game franchise is made into movies it more often then not carries with it an unfair disadvantage.

Let me start by saying Doom is much more then just a sci-fi action flick, it touches on so many well rounded themes that really get over shadowed by the  fact it is a "video game movie, staring a former pro wrestler". If you look into the story arc you will find a plethora of deep and intriguing elements. One of the most dominant themes in the story follows the concept of mans endless need for technology and science, which ultimately in this movie unlocks a hellish nightmare. There's a lot to be said about this concept of science and how it may someday lead to the end of mankind, how far is too far, can the balance between science and faith be kept equal?

Speaking of faith, the religious theme is strong throughout the movie, especially seen in the character the Goat, who is a walking icon for both Christianity and the argument for faith over science. This gets even trickier once this character faith fails him and he is ultimately "converted" into one of the demons. I could right a ten-page review over that theme alone, luckily for you I wont, but what I will say is that is a damn interesting sub plot to dive into. There's more too, what about that concept of hierarchy and unlimited devotion to your government that is contrasted by the two main characters, one of which is played by the Rock who did a superb job with his character.

Granted at times there was a fair share of corniness that I could have done without. I would have rather seen more demonic hellish creatures that the run of the mill zombie feel they threw in for the majority of the movie. The first person perspective towards the end of the movie was cool for those who played the game, but it was a little too long for my taste.

Ultimately I think this movie deserves much more credit then what it seems to get. If you are sitting down for cheap thrills and gore, yea that’s there and you should find your fix. But for those of us who like to sit down knit-pick about movies and stories, there is so much underneath the radar you could have a field day picking them out. It's unfortunate   that I think a lot of people won't pick up on the deeper meanings.

    Scotland, PA  (2002)

Scotland, PA is a dull and uneventful rendition of Shakespeare's Mc Beth. Don't get me wrong, I'm all for new versions of such great tragedies like Mc Beth, but I really feel the whole "fast food restaurant" version was, in lack of a better word, lame.  Seriously, I understand this was meant to be a dark comedy, but I found it boring and trite. I will give credit to Christopher Walken who lit up every scene he was in. I've seen much better versions of old classics done, if you want to see how this type of retelling should be done go rent "Brother Where Out Thou" an awesome remake of the epic tale known as Odysseus.

    Eragon  (2006)

I've heard rampant rumors that Eragon is nothing more then Star Wars set with dragons. I'll be honest I have seen every Star Wars movie and thought little about them. Yes I said it, stone me if you must. I only bring this up to prove a point, I don't know every similarity between the two movies because I just don't care enough about Star Wars to sit there and pick apart its mythos. Also, if you sit there and tell me Eragon is nothing more then Star Wars I will just turn around and tell you to give me one day and I will find twenty different myths that Star Wars was derived from. It doesn't bother me to say "this movie was a lot like this movie but only different in said ways" because ultimately that’s the only thing we can produce. Don't believe me? Run down to your local library and look up Joseph Campbell's "A Hero With a Thousand Faces". Now granted I'm not saying originality is dead, because we can use these mythos as blue prints to alter and create new experiences (even though they may seem similar). Now Eragon does an all right job with its creativity even though it relies heavily on a lot of cliched fantasy elements. I have read some of the book and found the story much more detailed and interesting in the book form rather than the movie. The whole Dragon Rider process seemed too pushed and rushed and I never really felt that amazing "epic" feeling like when I watched Star Wars, Harry Potter, or the Lord of the Rings. In the end I think the movie fizzled because of this. If they decide to do the sequels which I'm sure they will, I hope they are able to translate between the two mediums a little smoother.

    28 Weeks Later  (2007)

"28 Weeks Later" is a poster child for successful sequels. I will admit that I am a huge fan of its predecessor, and I am extra tough when it comes to sequels but "28 Weeks Later" is a brilliant movie even on its own merits. Zombie movies when done right often tie in some interesting literary theories mainly stemming from politics, which is pretty evident throughout both of the installments. I mean hell, they have the American Army there to keep everything under control, and before I spoiled too much, let me just say they bite off a little more then they can chew. This concept seems all too similar to out affair with the Middle East. The whole concept behind mankind being the true enemy onto itself (which I think was the dominant theme in the first movie) is what really allows me to sit down and take this franchise all the more serious then just a run of the mill gore fest. Granted you can sit back down your soda, eat your popcorn, and enjoy just that, a horrific terrifying bloody war between undead and humans, but for those who like the more sophisticated and analytical aspects of movies will have plenty to chew on. This movie has it all and I think will stand true in time to be one of the smarter and more thought provoking movies in its genre. Excellent!

    Pulse  (2006)

Abysmal, shallow, typical Americanized piece of crap. This is what’s wrong with American films. For the one decent American movie comes a horde of lame unoriginal like this. First off, it’s a crappy remake of what I can only hope is a better original. If you’re going to Americanize a foreign film at least try to keep its inherited merit intact. I wasn’t the biggest fan of the Grudge series but I commend them for not altering the complicated Japanese style of dual story telling, in fact that is the sole reason I enjoyed those flicks. It seems with the popularity of thriller and horror movies these days, we will be seeing a lot more of these cheap cash in of older or foreign remakes.

What makes a good comedy great? There is a huge list of comedies out there that i would easily rate four stars, but to give top honors, for me the movie needs to push the limits in some fresh new way. I'm not sure what it is about this instant classic: the lovable characters, the laugh out loud dialouge, the hillarios situations that arise, or a combination of all three, but this movie does just that. Steve Carell's is brilliant and his co-stars only further its greatness. In terms of pure chemistry this movies shines like none other.

    Thirteen  (2004)

Thirteen was a solid attempt at early teen drama. It however pales in comparison to the movie “Kids” which takes the cake for its edginess and willing to go that extra mile to leave that after taste of “what the hell did I just watch” in your mouth. I had a few minor issues with the camera work done. I’m not a fan of the style they used and at times felt like it took away from the movie. In the end I will say it was worth the two hours I spent watching it, but in the end it is forgettable.

I’m sure not a lot of people know about this comedic gem of a documentary, but if you enjoy laughing your arse off, please give this a shot. Its one giant practical joke gone amazingly funny, think Borat meets Punk’d (even though I despise that show). I’m a huge fan of comedy and only a few movies have made me laugh out loud as much and as hard as this. Bare with it as the first twenty minutes may be slow, but the remainder of the film is nothing but eye watering laughter. Seriously, great!

    Hot Fuzz  (2007)

I heard rumors that Hot Fuzz was “four times” better then Shaun of The Dead from a few of my good friends. Let’s just say I once again fell into the hype, much like I did with Spider-Man 3. Luckily I didn’t leave my local theater kicking and screaming, however I was a tad disappointed. Don’t get me wrong, largely I enjoyed this action/mystery/thriller/comedy. The cinematography was delightful and I will give the starring duo team their credit, their performances were outstanding. Knowing this movie was being billed as an action comedy I will say on both separate accounts they failed to deliver to my expectations. I only found myself chuckling out loud on a few separate occasions. I will say however the duo’s banter kept a smile on my face almost completely throughout the film. For the action sequences I also feel as if they dropped the "proverbial" ball. We have some grotesque death scenes, but when it comes down to the actual cop versus bad guy shoot em’ up scenes they seemed to want to go down the PG-13 route. So you get this mix of over the top gore to “instead of shooting the old hag through the head let’s shoot a chandelier to fall on her instead, scaring her more then hurting her”. It’s already an “R” rated movie, why not go all the way with it? I also felt like at times the movie tried too hard to take itself too seriously. Shaun of the Dead played off the seriousness and silliness beautifully; Hot Fuzz fizzled a bit. In the end i thinkt his movie had a lot of redeemign qualities of it, but a few key issues that prevent me from honoring it with five stars.

    Spider-Man 3  (2007)

Oh how disappointed I was. Let me start buy saying this: I tried not to fall into the hype that was Spiderman 3. I had little doubt that this movie would live up to its predecessors. I will say one good thing about Spiderman 3, the marketing behind this so called “blockbuster” was ingenious. They took s miserable uneventful movie and made it look so bad ass I almost soiled myself in excitement. Damn them for getting my hopes up.

So let me reiterate, Spiderman Three was a disaster in almost all ways possible. I almost walked out an hour into the movie due solely on its awful dialogue. But then! It got so much worse. Que the emo Parker, and the god forsaken jazz routine and I wanted to vomit. Here’s an idea! Lets make Parker portray how the black suit is turning him evil by letting his hair down and dancing like a retard down New York City. Oh wait! How about we have him do this crazy jazz routine too! Nothing says evil more then jazz dancing! Okay actually if their pulling a metafiction trick on us knowing that by using this lame “idea” that is actually would be evil, then I give them kudos. But by judging on how bad of a script and story this was, I think I would be giving them too much credit.

Beyond the bad dialogue, and purely horrid boring script, there were also other numerous flaws. Acing: horrible, pacing: boring, characters: flawed and jumbled, eight different endings: lame.  In the end, this movie was a giant waste of time and money.

There’s no denying the pure beauty of 300’s imagery. For visual sake I would no doubt give this movie top honors, unfortunately a movie can’t be judged merely on its visual appeal. If you thought 300 had a good story, then you’re basically a dumb bastard. No seriously. If you couldn’t unravel the entire plot line from the first twenty minutes of the movie (with or without any prior knowledge of the mythos) then you shouldn’t be able to hold a job long enough for you to pay the ten dollars it costs to see this movie in theaters. The plot was trite and unoriginal. The only thing that saved this movie’s merit is its wonderful ability to entirely suck its audience in with is imagery. Beyond its visual flair and amazing fighting scenes, this movie offered nothing more then a few yawns. Once the fighting stopped, so did my interest.

    Disturbia  (2007)

Disturbia is a nice walk down the “good but not great” street that is Hollywood. I’ll say this Shia LeBouf was way better then I ever expected, and from this performance alone is rapidly becoming a favorite of mine. For being billed as a thriller, I think it falls short. The whole “possible next door killer” plot seemed to be the least interesting aspect of the film. I found myself enjoying the witty dialogue and the aspect of how one must cope with the isolation of house arrest much more entertaining. It is because of this that I think the film delivered over my expectations. Normally I cringe at this type of film falling under the PG-13 rating, but this one really pulled it out well. In whole, the story was nothing new and added no new twist to its inherited text. Yet in the end I couldn’t help but to walk away from the theater with a content feeling.
