Re:Recast THE SHINING (1980)

"I'd probably first get Guillermo Del Toro (Pan's Labyrinth) as director and Spike Jonze as principle photographer. I'd reset it in the American south west, in a resort hotel in an isolated area that gets very few people in the summer months because it is just too hot. This changes the dynamic a bit and gives us something else to play with (the heat gives us maddness instead of the cold). I would also use a primarily hispanic cast of characters, trying to get the feel of the American Southwest. Bencio Del Toro ... Jack Torrance Salma Hayek ... Wendy Torrance Rocket Rodriguez (the son of robert rodriguez) ... Danny Torrance Lou Diamond Philips ... Dick Hallorann (the chef with the shine) Javier Bardem ... Stuart Ullman (general manager of the Overlook) Benjamin Bratt ... Delbert Grady (the ghost of the previous caretaker, who tells Jack to "correct" his family) John Leguizamo ... Lloyd the Bartender (ghost) Edward James Olmos ... Larr ... "

">>> This would be far out. In Wong Kar Wai's hands, Chinatown would be one part pretty and one part gritty, exotic and familiar at the same time. <<< Wong Kar Wai is one of my favorate directors. Chungking Express is such a beautiful movie and I'd love to see what he would do with Chinatown. >>> gsanchet made a lot of good casting choices, too. I especially like Chow Yun Fat as Juliet's dad. He's one of the only guys tough enough to match Sam Jackson, Romeo's dad. <<< He was really good as a "crazy father" in Curse of the Golden Flower. I keep on thinking of the scene where Juliet's father goes crazy on her and I kept on thinking that Chow Yun Fat would do an amazing job with that sensibility. And Bridget Lin's look in Chunking Express would also fit the bill as a strange and abused woman with secrets that we never get to see on film. >>> I also get a kick out of imagining Jackie Chan as Father Lawrence. <<< I loved that p ... "Directed by Wong Kar Wai and produced by Spike Lee's 40 Acres and a Mule, this rendition of Romeo and Juliet is set in the middle of New York City's Chinatown. The stately Capulets are a wealthy Chinese-American family that regards themselves as trying to do be upwardly mobile in New York's Chinatown. The Montagues are another wealthy African-American family that are trying to make inroads into Chinatown. THE MONTAGUESLil Bow Wow ... Romeo T.I. ... Benvolio (Romeo's cousin) Anthony Mackie ... Sampson (Montague thug) Keanan Thompson ... Gregory (Montague thug) Kel Mitchell ... Balthasar (Montague thug) Samuel L. Jackson ... Ted Montague (Romeo's dad) Angela Bassett ... Caroline Montague (Romeo's mom) THE CAPULETSTV Carpio ... Juliet Rain ... Tybalt (Juliet's cousin) Parry Shen ... Abra (Capulet thug) Chow Yun Fat ... Fulgencio (Juliet's dad) Brigette Lin ... "Here's a gender-swapped version that me and my lady-friend came up with that reads kind of like an anti- sex in the city): Lisa Loeb ... Robin GordonRafe Finnes ... Lawrence TV Carpio ... Diane (the quiet one) Parker Posie ... Bonnie (the Jack Black one) Lenny Kravitz ... Martin La Salle Ewan McGreggor ... Charlie Nicholson Ben Stiller ... Lou Amy Poeler ... Amy 'Reggie" Regina Lily Taylor ... Middle aged customer (the girls won't help him) Cree Summer ... Louise, the cool customer Angelina Jolie ... Marienne (the guy Charlie falls for)Tori Amos ... Herself I was thinking how I would do a Richard Linkletter version of High Fidelity and I came up wtih this cast where he got funding by Ben Stiller: Ethan Hawke ... Rob Gordon Julie Delpy ... Laura (which, alone, would've been awesome to see them together in a movie where they were a couple on the rocks) Wiley Wiggins ... Dick (the quiet one) (Wiggins can ... "

"The key thing about the original book was that the story revolved around people who were distanced from the original music. They were brits who were arguing about American rock and roll, and that made it a bit more pitiful than the movie version. These Brits were even arguing about things that weren't about them. So keeping with that theme of misplaced nerds in the wrong place at the wrong time, I went with a different sort of cast and set them as sort of expatriots in Harajuku Japan: John Cho (harold and kumar) ... Rob Gordon Sandra Oh (grey's anatomy) ... LauraJames Kyson Lee (heroes) ... Dick (the quiet one) Bobby Lee (mad tv) ... Barry (the Jack Black one) Lisa Loeb ... Marie De Salle Faye Wong (Chunking Express) ... Charlie NicholsonMargret Cho (all american girl) ... Liz Dusten Ngyuen (21 Jump Street) ... Ian 'Ray' Raymond Cary-Hiroyuki Tagawa (Mortal Kombat) ...
