"Scorsese is the master of this, and there are two that come to mind... Goodfellas - Henry Hill is just a normal shlub and his swan song, Sid Vicious' version of Sinatra's 'My Way' - the entire movie summed up in a song - brilliant. The Departed - As a Bostonian, there couldn't possibly be a better opening credit anthem than the Dropkick Murphy's 'I'm Shipping Up To Boston' " [More]
Re: Top five favorite Soundtracks
By lbenschwartz in Best Movie Soundtracks
"1. Velvet Goldmine - Classic case of a fantastic soundtrack making a good movie great... Vintage Brian Eno, Roxy Music and Lou Reed mixed with fantastic covers by Shudder to Think, Placebo and a dead-on Stooges cover by Ewan McGreggor. 2. Amateur - Hal Hartley is known for creating a lot of the music for his own movies, but this gem from the mid-1990s is who's who of that decade's indie rock: My Bloody Valentine, PJ Harvey, Pavement, Liz Phair, Bettie Severt, Jesus Lizard, Red House Painters and Yo La Tango. 3. Dream with the Fishes - Little seen indie flick from the 90s with mostly little known singer-songwriter types: Nick Drake (pre-VW ad exposure), Jeremy Toback, Greg Brown, Grandaddy, Ween and a classical Waterboys tune. Very solid, satisfying album. 4. Dazed and Confused - Has there ever been a better collection of 70's super-rock? 5. Purple Rain - Much, much more than a soundtrack, one of the greatest albums ever made. " [More]

"It seems unfair a penalize actors who have reach a level of fame, at least in part because they are very good at what they do, because its impossible not to be oversaturated with the details about the celebrity's personal lives. Celebrity gossip is as old as film itself, but it has reach a whole new level with youtube, tmz.com, and the rest of the internet. I can certainly understand being sick of certain personalities, but the question is how much can that be blamed on these actors, and how much of it is our fault for being too interested? " [More]

By lbenschwartz in Filmspotting
"1. Dawn of the Dead - When the world literally goes to hell, a group of survivors must fight zombies and the other evils of consumerism and society in a desserted shopping mall. Why a shopping mall? The living dead gravitate to the one place that was important in their lives. 2. A Clockwork Orange - Sometimes you have to fight to be yourself. Even if yourself is a murderous hateful punk.3. Night of the Hunter - The innocent vs. evil in the guise of religion. 4. Paradise Lost - The West Memphis Three, very clearly falsely occused by a hypocritical and sactamonious society.5. Do The Right Thing - Everybody's fighting against something or someone, but nobodys really right or wrong. But Chuck D says it all. " [More]

"Here's why I think both Mr. Smith and It's a Wonderful Life are brilliant. If you were to stop watching them 15-20 minutes before they end, you'd two very dark tragedies. Both characters go to very dark places before the sentimental endings happen. In Wonderful Life, you have a character whose life is one long string of disappointments and is on the verge of killing himself. Mr. Smith sees the ideals he's lived his life by corrupted and perverted. And Capra doesn't shy away from the tragedy, and therefore really earns his happy endings. " [More]

"When I'm hired to save Tony Scott's ill-fated remake of The Warriors, I'd save the entire project by hiring these actors...1. Swan, the hero and leader of The Warriors - Adrien Brody2. Ajax, the hot tempered, smart-mouthed side-kick Warrior - Seth Rogan3. Rembrandt, the youngest warrior - Joseph Gordon-Levitt4. Luther, the psychotic leader of the rival gang - Christian Bale5. Cyrus, the man who tries to unite the gangs until he's shot down by Luther - Forest Whitker " [More]

"Summer movie seasons come and go, but there was something the summer of 1982 ranks amongst the greatest. What made 1982 so special? Well, while your standing in line, waiting for the third recycling Spiderman, Shrek, Pirates or Oceans, think about what you could have been going to your, most likely newly opened, suburban Cineplex. These were the movies of 1982:May 14: Conan the BarbarianMay 21: Road WarriorMay 28: Rocky 3June 4: Poltergeist and/or Star Trek: The Wrath of KhanJune 11: E.T.June 25: Blade Runner and/or The ThingJuly 9: TronJuly 23: The World According to GarpJuly 30: Last American Virgin and/or Night ShiftAugust 13: Fast Times at Ridgemont High and/or Officer and a GentlemanNot only did some of the most memorable movies of the 80s meet the public, but this four month period in 1982 set the tone for what Hollywood proceeded to make for the remainder of the decade and beyond. For one, consider the talent introduced here, and what they would go on to accomplish beyond 19 ... Once: Best Movie/Soundtrack of ...

"Once is a small Irish movie about a Dublin street performer and a Czech immigrant pianist, who meet and for a brief time make some really great music. I doubt it has great distribution yet, but this simple and affecting story is easily one of the best movies I've seen this year, with undoubtedly the best soundtrack of many years. The movie is strung together and told through a series of brilliant Irish pop songs. Their kind of in a David Gray style folk-rock, but with much more powerful and intensity. Basically, this is a musical but without anyone breaking into song and dance for no reason. I realize this is the season of big blockbusters, but this is definitely worth seeking out. " [More]
