Fracture (2007)

Great plot and I am huge fan of Ryan Gosling ( I think he is probably one of the best modern young actors) but Anthony Hopkins kinda ruined the movie for me. Don't get me wrong, he is amazing but it felt like he was reprising his Hannibal role. Incredibly well educated, well-to-do, controlling figure who is playing Cat & Mouse with a young up & comer... Silence fo the Lambs all over.

Metallica: Some Kind of Monster (2003)

Documentary revolving around Metallica's time spent recording their last album, St. Anger. Masterfully directed by the same guys that made My Brother's Keeper. I am not a huge fan of Metallica (I don't own any of their stuff) and my wife doesn't care for them at all but we were both enthralled with the flick. They talk and argue like family, a very dysfunctional family, but still a family. It was interesting seeing all these gorgeous shots of SF with metal playing over them... The band lives and records there. Interesting that they had a psychologist (@ 40 K a month!!!) helping them through the rough patch. Also interesting watching Lars and James who were at each others throats band together and turn on the doc. Hah.

The Red Balloon (1956)

How did I ever miss this film. So amazingly childlike in its wonderment. 34 minutes of silent film and just brimming with emotions. I loved it. Whimsical modern fairy tale. I was amazed at how they handled the balloon. I bet it was a frustrating shoot trying to control the balloon. The color schemes were amazing. Everything but the balloon was a muted grey/brown palette and then you have this gorgeous red balloon in contrast... brilliant. Fantastic film. the main actor was actually the writer/director's son and he did a great job. What little dialog they did use was in French and even though they weren't nay subtitles, you didn't need them. Awesome.

The General (1927)

This is the first Buster Keaton film I've ever seen and I loved it. It was hilarious and some of his physical gags were jaw dropping in their danger and scope. Amazing to know he did them all himself. I liked the silent film style of acting. Nothing was really lost in translation. really large scale film. Interesting that it was a comedy set during the Civil War and the protagonist was on the South's side. Could you make a comedy were the protagonist was a Nazi???

The Player (1992)

A Robert Altman film from the early 90's, although I had look at the release date to see if it was from the 80's as it had that feel to it. It's a look at Hollywood and not a favorable one at that, but mixed with a murder. It was entertaining, but I wasn't gaga for it. It's known for having so many (around 60) celebrity cameos and while cool it was almost a little distracting. At times it was like watching a Where's Waldo movie. It did have a cool opening shot that was uninterrupted for over 7 minutes while talking about MTV style jump cuts. That was cool...

Mix movie based on video game with completely formulaic film about trained killer from secret agency who then turns on him and you have Hitman. Completely forgettable. Ripped off so many other flicks: MI2, Matrix, etc. Has there ever been a god video game based flick....

The Ruins (2008)

Once again the book was infinitely better. The Ruins (the book) and I Am Legend (the book) are easily my favorite horror novels. Don't get me wrong, the adaptation wasn't near the screw-up I Am Legend was... This was a good film with lots of squirm in your seat moments. Acting was well done.Dumbed down though and they removed a lot of the psychological elements. Read the book first...

Great western from Sergio Leone. Starred James Coburn as an Irish Revolutionary and Rod Steiger as a Mexican bandit. Neither of their accents were the best and at times Coburn just dropped his altogether. Good flick though. Coburn was awesome to watch in this.

Pirates of the Caribbean: At World's End (2007)

Loved the first movie. The second one was a mess and the third.... 2 hours and 50 minutes??!?!? Could have trimmed an hour off this easily. And Wil's character turned into Jack Sparrow... actually everyone kinda did. Disappointing flick, and I hear there are thinking about a few more sequels.

Julie Taymor's movie musical incorporating the Beatles' music. Loved the interpretations and her visual style is always amazing (Watch Titus!!! AMAZING FILM!!!). The movie was highly entertaining but I wasn't blown away by it... musicals just tend to work better on stage for me.

Planet B-Boy (2007)

Documentary about the re-birth of b-boy crews world-wide. Shot incredibly well, great use of music. It did drag a little towards the middle of movie but picked up at the end. Really, really fun and good film. Had a lot more hearth than I thought. I'm still having nightmares about the danish b-boys...

The Killing of John Lennon (2006)

One of the two Mark David Chapman movies that are/will be coming to the theaters. Chapter 27 is the other. Started off really great then kinda switched tone. Editing was a little off especially with how they switched scenes. Discussed with my fine movie companion (see above) that it had the feel of a TV movie at times.

Watched this in gambling country which kind of added to the film... it was entertaining if not a little formulaic/predictable. Not really worth going to the movies for. More of a renter. Great soundtrack, lots of techno. Even has an exclusive LCD Soundsystem track on there.

Into the Wild (2007)

Fantastic film. A lot of critics complained about the main character being a little too messianic in the film and I agree as he really wasn't depicted that way in the book(which was excellent also). Charismatic yes just not so christ-like. Emile Hirsch did a great job of carrying this film and Sean Penn did an excellent job behind the camera. The movie was over 2.5 hours and probably could have been edited down a bit. Eddie Vedder's soundtrack was beautiful... I will be picking this up soon.

Paranoid Park (2007)

Gus Van Sant's new flick which is in theaters and On Demand through IFC. Only 80 mins long and a lot of the scenes are repeated through flashbacks. One of the better Van Sant films as of late (I was yelling at the TV when watching Gerry.... two hours of watching people walk through the dessert. I shit you not). Interesting choices for music and non-actors. Some good and some bad on both fronts. The cinematography was great especially on the skateboarding scenes. Def. an art house flick through and through.

The Bank Job (2007)

Great lil' heist flick. I like the setting of London in the 70's. Based (loosely I think) on a true story but the government actually classified all of the details of the robbery and most of the items stolen have never been recovered. The fact that you know some of it happened actually made it a better flick. It was a nice change-up to see the crew as a bunch of screw-ups and not the tops in their field ala Ocean's 11.

Gone Baby Gone (2007)

Incredibly engrossing film from the very beginning. Got a little predictable towards the end, but I'm not gonna fault it for that. Excellent acting across the board especially from Amy Ryan and Casey Affleck. Ben Affleck did a great job co-writing the screenplay and directing the movie. Maybe he should stay behind the camera from here on out....

Animated movie from Warner Brothers. Its about the formation of the Justice League during the Cold War. Really one of the better animated comic movies I've seen. The style, based on Daryn Cooke's artwork was old school cool. Voice acting was great too.

The Protector (2006)

he first really bad movie of my run. I loved Ong Bak and was hoping for a similar flick. This was the American English-dubbed version and I've read that they also edited it quite a but from the original. You can absolutely tell, because the narrative flow is so messed up. Whole scenes are missing with plot lines not getting resolved. The fight scenes were cool, but I still liked the action in Ong Bak better.

Raiders of the Lost Ark: The Adaptation (2004)

Renewed my faith in movies. Magical and hilarious all at the same time. Had a Q&A with the cast/crew after and it was just as entertaining. Remake of Raiders by a group of 12-year-olds that took 6 years to complete. The sets were impressive and the movie was amazing. Low on budget but rich in heart. (that was so lame).

DIR-TAY!! Directed by Bernardo Bertolucci.. In the last five years I've slowly been educating myself with French modern/new wave and this is a modern film that has nothing but love for that era. incredibly (and refreshingly) frank with it's depiction of sex(uality). Michael Pitt has already amassed an interesting library of films.

Prime example of where a director failed in directing. A few days into filming he should have pulled Matthew McConaughey aside and shown him the dailies and said, "whatever the **** you're doing with this character is wrong. Quit talking out of the side of your mouth." That sums up the film...

Hearts of Darkness: A Filmmaker's Apocalypse (1991)

An amazing look into film-making in the 70's. After watching this you realize that it was an minor/major miracle that Apocalypse Now ever got made. Most of the movie was compiled of footage shot by Francis Ford Coppola's wife Eleanor. You also realize Coppola had a huge ego, but this is probably what got the project completed. The fact that an insider was shooting the footage kept everyone guard down and it gives you a great insight to Sheen's heart attack, Hopper's drug state, Brando's stubbornness, etc. One of the best doc. on film-making. A must see.
