""My pet zombie hates your guts, but he loves your brains!""
Personal statement:

                                         I Love the Dead.

Zombie movies are my all-time favorite type of horor film. There is just something way beyond unsettling about being eaten alive by dead people. Zombies Rock!!!!

I watch movies to be entertained, not for aesthetics or technical merit. If I can escape the hell which is mine for at least an hour or two, then mission accomplished.

    I Am Legend  (2007)

Man, I was so hoping that the anticipation I had built up waiting for this film to be released on dvd would somehow make me like the film more than I knew I would. "I Am Legend" is one of my all time favorite books, and knowing the general rule that the book is almost always better than the film, I was still hoping this remake would really do the book justice. So much for hoping. I really enjoyed the Vincent Price version of the "Last Man on Earth", and thought that it was fairly close to the book in all regards. Too bad someone thought it would be a great idea to stray so far from the already magnificent book and previous remakes. Some things are just better left alone. The cgi zombies were a huge disappointment as was the ending (I haven't seen the alternate ending). I knew the ending already and it was such a shocker that it made the book so memorable and an instant favorite. So tragic and desperate. Too bad Hollywood got ahold of this story and made it nothing more than a PG-13 money sucking machine.

This film was not what I had expected, and I guess I should have read the book first. My eight year old suggested we put this one on our queue after seeing the trailer when it was realeased to dvd. I wish someone would have warned us not to watch this film so close to my "womanly time" and also not until my son was a bit older so he could understand the need for the tragedy in the film. I had to spend the better part of bedtime explaining why things played out as they did so my son could stop crying and get to sleep. I did enjoy the film though I spent the last half sniffling and putting on a brave face for my son.

Okay, I bought into all the hoopla that this film has generated over the years and finally decided to see it in it's original "glory" as it was intended back in the 80's (Netflix states that it came out in 1985). Very interesting on many levels. Brutal to say the least. My first impression was the whole Blair Witch comparison, and then on to the live animal killings. Not really my cup of tea (thankful for fast forward), but I can understand the neccesity of it. The whole documentary feel was okay, but not really great. I did like the film, but not love it simply because it wasn't really a horror film in my opinion. Truely horrorific, but not scary enough in a fictionalized sort of way. Glad I saw it for the experience, but not one I'd care to watch over and over again for the sheer pleasure of it.

    Black Sheep  (2006)

I love this film! Hilarious and gorey. Well put together and even a bit unique in it's choice of "zombies". I enjoyed the subtle humor and the story was strong enough to carry the silly premise of crazed, mutant sheep. Very gorey and the effects were nicely done without the help of cgi. I wasn't a fan of mutton before this film, but I love it now!

    Hostel Part II  (2007)

Wow. I'm really in the minority here, but I loved Hostel part deux. I was so completely let down by the first film that I decided to not expect anything spectacular with this one. I found myself loving the comedic interludes and the cameos were also refreshing. I couldn't wait for that horrendously fugly Heather Matarazzo to get killed. She was difficult to watch because she is so damn peculiar looking! And her character was just too whiny and lame. She begged to be killed! I liked the fact that the previous hero was also in this film and involved in a bit of an unforseeable twist. It was also nice to be a bit surprised by the ending. I expected it to be predictable with the reluctant torturer saving the heroine, but alas, I was wrong. Nice.  I actually watched all the extras and enjoyed the tour of the real torture museum. Very informative and interesting to watch.

Okay, maybe it's just me and I'm too expectant of a good film, start to finish. I had a decent feeling about this one. It started a bit slow, but I had faith in Tobe to bring it around. Well, Tobe let me down big time! The story had potential and hey, maybe it was a political comment on society and it's dependence on crude oil, I'm not really sure, but what a waste of an hour. I could have been ironing or vacuuming, or doing something far less painful than watching this dribble! There have been very few of these episodes that were actually worth one's time to view them. I may as well be watching the Scifi Channel's "original films". At least I don't expect much from those films, so therefore I'm not  as disappointed by their shortfalls.

    Cello  (2005)

I really enjoyed this film. Pretty inventive and I liked the fact that I didn't figure it out in the first 20 minutes. Not very gorey or creepy, but smartly played to the end. I thought the littlest girl was adorable and pretty funny. It was a nice departure from the c-rap I've been watching lately.

    Penny Dreadful  (2006)

Here we go again. "Penny Dreadful" wasn't a complete waste of time and maybe that had something to do with the competent cast. The acting was some of the best coming out of this "Horrorfest" series so far, and I've actually seen almost all of them from 2006's festival. There were some genuinely creepy scenes, but throughout most of the film I just kept thinking, "How smart is it to keep popping downers when you are being tormented by a raw-meat-kabob eating psycho?" What would happen if the heroine actually used some common sense and didn't act like such a ninny? I guess it would be a pretty short film. This was one that I actually enjoyed for the most part.

    Unrest  (2006)

This film was much better than most of the "8 Films to Die For" horrorfest series. The story (save for the lame ending) was pretty good and the thought of getting into a tank of formaldehyde and cadavers gave me a good heebie-jeebie feeling that no other film from this fest has delivered so far. It had some great effects and shock moments, and I heard that they actually used some real dead bodies in this film. You really can't tell which are real or not, but creepy just the same. A pretty good effort overall.

Okay, let me just say that I was a teenager when this movie came out and I was also an avid collector of the trading cards and stickers ( I still have all of them) so it seemed like a natural progression to see the film. I actually enjoyed it back in 1987, and now my very own little spawn has formed an odd penchant for the Garbage Pails himself (he's 8). He has rented the cartoon version (never actually released according to Netflix) and again with the "natural progression", he LOVES this movie. Must be the horrendous fashions and hairstylings of the 80's. He doesn't seem to mind the poor acting or the off-sync voices. He just enjoys being entertained by these gross little versions of Cabbage Patch dolls. I actually enjoyed the jog down memory lane myself. Don't tell anyone.

Saw this movie years ago and still haven't gotten the bad taste out of my mouth. Absolutely palatable rape scene and my husband and I still use the quote,"Get your brother a beer!", every time we need a fresh one. Truely powerful in it's realistic view of a psychopath.

    The Descent  (2005)

Wow! I wasn't expecting much from this film considering the all girl cast and the fact that I usually hate chicks in these kind of movies because thay are usually the ones who fall down or can't keep their whimperings to  a minimum when the boogey is near. This movie rocked! Very uber-creepy boogeys with their mewlings and milky-eyed blindness. Very highmarks for this one. One of my favorites now.

    Homicidal  (1961)

Wow! I can't believe no one has ever mentioned this film before. I happened to catch it the other night on IFC purely by chance and am so glad for it. I usually don't watch too many black and white films but thought I had better start. I am so glad I started  with this one! Crazy lady with maniacal tendencies and a way with the invalids. I thought there was something not quite right with "Warren" (like those crazy teeth!), but I  never guessed the twist which is refreshing for a change. This was played so well by the main actress, Jean Arless. Very enjoyable.

One of the best MOH so far. I really liked this installment beacuse the story was so strong. The acting was spot on and the gore was a lovely shade of crimson. I wanted to see how this film would end, instead of just wanting it to end like so many other films I've been tormented by lately. Maybe my faith in the Masters of Horror series has been renewed.

    2001 Maniacs  (2004)

I really enjoyed the deliberate campiness of this. Seems like everyone had a great time working on this film, and it carried over into their performances. How can you go wrong with Mr. Englund? This film didn't take itself very seriously, and I appreciate that in a film like this. I was definitely entertained for an hour and a half.

    The Hamiltons  (2006)

I have really tried to come at these films with an openmind, but the "8 Films to Die For" series really suck. I'm glad that I waited for them to be released on dvd instead of overpaying to be disappointed at the theaters. Maybe the ambiance of the movie house setting would have helped these films seem more frightening, but I seriously doubt it.

The Hamiltons was not the worst, but it sucked just the same. Poor acting by most of the cast (the twins were okay), a real stretch of a story and the gore factor was lacking. The end was a real letdown, as I was expecting a real monster. Maybe I'm just too dense to see the "true underlying remark on society", but hey, I'm here to be entertained, not enlightened.

    Boo!! Hiss!!

This was almost as bad as "Sick Girl" . You could see the ending coming a mile away, and even with the addition of melted icecream guts, this was nothing other than an "IT" rip off. Retarded clowns are scary enough, but when they die I hardly think they come back with supernatural powers and their icecream truck to boot. I'm almost going to give up on MOH as whole since the only one really worth a damn was "Imprint". I think I'll go back to watching "Tales from the Darkside" on SciFi. At least those were cheesy because they had small budgets and it was 1980's "horror" on syndicated television.

I really wanted this to be the best MOH so far. I was all set for a serious mind f***k by my favorite author, Clive Barker and with Tony Todd as the villian, how could you go wrong? I should have known better than for Barker's words to translate well onto film, and I thought that Todd's finger tips were going to fall off from bad spirit gum application. Boo. Hiss. Not at all what I had anticipated from the trailer. Neat idea and story overall, but not a good translation overall.

    Vacancy  (2007)

Well, there's 90 minutes I'll never get back. I've sat through some really horrible movies before, but I knew they were either intentionally bad, or were obvious B movies from the start. This one really fooled me into thinking that something worthwhile was going to happen any minute, but lo and behold, no. What do you expect from someone named Nimrod, right? It had a good premise, but really had nowhere to go with it after the first 20 minutes. I was really looking forward to Luke and Kate getting snuffed.

    American Psycho  (2000)

I just watched "American Psycho" for the third time last night and really felt that I was laughing a little too much. Maybe it was just late in the evening and I was a bit punchy, but this movie cracked me up. Bale's character was so evil and nasty, and just outright loopy. It made for an interesting depiction of 80's ugliness. I seem to like this film more each time I see it.

I loved this film! I usually dislike musicals that are on film, but I didn't pigeonhole this one as a musical, so much as a sing-a-long. John Cameron Mitchell did a fantastic job both musically and acting. I fell in love with the character (and his make-up applying abilities) right from the start. I was a bit confounded by his bandmate who appeared to be male, but sang and looked like a chick with a five o'clock shadow, but that just lent to the quirkiness of the whole film. The soundtrack is brilliant and I watch this film at least once every couple of months or so. Hilariously heartbreaking from beginning to end.

This was definitley one of the better Master's of Horror installments. George Wendt provided a brilliant performance as a functioning "lunatic" in an ordinary world. This was crafted quite well from the opening scene (making sure that Grandpa was CLEAN) to the relatively unexpected ending. It was so nice to finally see a well acted, well thought out, non-convoluted film in this series. Thouroughly enjoyable and funny too!

    Wolf Creek  (2004)

I loved this film for probably all the wrong reasons. I loved the intensity of the torture and madness. I loved the villian for all his quirky-ness and underlying evilness. I loved the fact that it was "loosly" based on real events like "Texas Chainsaw". Most of my friends hated it and some even returned it partially watched ( I reccomended it so much that I just bought it to get others to watch it),but it is by far one of the better films I saw/purchased last year.

I'm really not sure what actually qualifies certain directors to be asked to contribute to this series, but I will definitly skip any more Lucky McKee directed films. This movie sucked super hard. If I wanted to watch a lesbo porno I would have rented one. I do not care for Angela Bettis (I was under the impression that her character in "May" was supposed to act like that because she was strange, not because that is the extent of Ms. Bettis' range as an actress) as an actress, so I should have known better than to expect much from this episode. What a loser of a film. A giant bug...sheeesh!

    High Tension  (2003)

I watched this film with the understanding that it was "Grrrreat!" I have to admit the movie was tense, and gorey, and sick (love the opening scene with "a little head"), but the ending left so many gaping holes that I almost hated this film! The ending was not obvious, as other films are quite predictable these days, but the twist left me with more questions than could be answered. Like, who was the convienience store clerk talking to when she was hiding behind a rack of Twinkies?!  I guess the masturbation scene just wasn't enough to make me forgive the whack-job of an ending.

    Hostel  (2005)

I was anxiously awaiting this film as I really enjoyed Cabin Fever. I had a friend who saw it at the theater and he told me it was "pretty good". I even waited until late at night to watch it (my favorite time to watch horror films). After wading through the T&A, and the silly premise that some guys are so lame as to stay at a hostel when their friend says he has a place for them to stay, I was perked up to see a real director like Takashi Miike make a cameo in this so far, lame-o film. Once the torture started I felt like this just might be worth my time. The sick and sadistic methods were great, but the end was so lame that I have to junk the film as a whole. WTF is with the uber-cheesy "eyeball" effect at the end? With all the money being thrown into this film you would think they could have done better than some kid dressing up for Halloween to scare his little sister! The eyeball gag in "Summer School" was better than this c-rap! Bummer.

This was my introduction to Takashi Miike films and I was hooked right from the start. I watched this film three times back to back (got to love Showtime's rotation) and then I purchased it and passed it out to all of my friends. Some people just can't take a joke.

The brutality. The gore. The comedic relief. This is what great films are made of. I will never eat shrimp tempura with the same zeal and pleasure again.

    Imprint  (2006)

The name Takashi Miike is not synonymous with horror, but with that being said, he has truely mastered the most horrorific episode of The Masters of Horror series. I purchased this before I had seen it just based on the buzz and the fact that I love Takashi Miike. I was not disappointed in the least. Although Billy Drago appears to be on some sort of major downer (like heroin), his dull and spacey delivery makes the film that much creepier. The scenes of torture are so real and almost unbearable to watch, but I couldn't look away for even one second. The aborted fetuses were very unnerving and yet neccesary to the story. The only possible complaint I do have is the almost comical "hand" at the end. WTF? Did I miss something? I usually do when it comes to Miike films, but they are still interesting and artful to watch.

"I love the dead, before they're cold. They're rotting flesh for me to hold."

There aren't too many actors able to pull off a scene like Robert Englund did in "Dance of the Dead". Only a true master can make you believe he is doing the unbelievable, like having oral sex with a dead girl. Truely a master. Much like Richard Matheson who penned the original tale many years ago. The story is brilliant and frightening. The "new and improved" story is a bit lacking and even with the new bits it has it's let downs. That being said, it is still by far one of the better Masters of Horror episodes.
