Queer Cinema
"With every new week more and more films are flooding our local cinemas and suprisingly some of those films are queer in nature. Since the rollarcoaster of debates that erupted (and occasionally continue today) with the release and overwhelming acclaim of Brokeback Mountain it seems that the idea of a mainstream queer film being marketed to all walks of life (in that I mean more than just queer audiences) has noticeably reached some weird standstill. Is the subject slowly being assimilated into the American psyche or is it surreptitiously being cast aside and viewed as nothing more than a blase trend that is past its expiration date? What are your perceptions of the common thought about queer cinema and what do you all believe (if anything) could / would / should happen in 2008? "

Philosophy of Film
"Back to the original question, I totally agree that voice work is more or less an easy way for most mainstream (and even some unknowns) to make a decent amount of money without them really being tied to the project. There names appear in the advertising yet once the film is released no one really pays too much attention to it.I know Brad Pitt, Angelina Jolie and most other A-listers have contributed to at least one animated feature in their careers yet I can't really even think of them. I can only really recall the "better" or more notable films like Aladdin (with Robin WIlliams as everyone knows) and Howl's Moving Castle (with Christian Bale and Billy Crystal), etc. that have been recognized not for simply their entertainment value but the work as a piece of art. Philosophy of Film
"No more so than Garfield, Alvin and the Chipmunks and the others that I grew up watching as a kid. There is something within the idiocy of the film that has kept it one of those guilty pleasure movies that I'll make a point of watching when it happens to be on. However, I was a big Buffy the Vampire Slayer fan so maybe the fact that Sarah Michelle Gellar is in it might have initially drawn me into it.Hrm, now that I've admitted that fact I will forever not be taken seriously. Hehe, oh well. "

Philosophy of Film
"Granted that I have no desire to see Alvin and the Chipmunks, Underdog, Garfield and it's sequel or any of the other digitized cartoons of past generations, I have to admit that one of my guilty pleasures is the first live action Scooby-Doo movie that came out a number of years ago. The digital effects used for Scooby-Doo are rather horrible and the plot, dialogue, and acting are laughable, but there is something about it that keeps me pleasantly content during the hour and a half of its runtime. I'm fairly certain it is Matthew Lillard and his point on acting as Shaggy and his amazing ability to act with an invisible gargantuan dog. "

Just a Reminder . . .
By

Queer Cinema
"I just wanted to remind (and inform those new members) about the List called of all things, "The List". I'm trying to make sure that every queer film is on this list so make sure if you come across a film and begin to place it on the various lists to also check and make sure it is on "The List".Ugh, did that come out all right? Heh.Anyways, thanks again to all of you that have taken the time to browse through and place films in their correct category. I'm only being particular because I truly want people to be able to quickly find precisely which film they are looking for. Sorry if I'm coming off really anal.Lastly, welcome new members! If you have the time I hope that you'll go through the past discussions and contribute and possibly give us a little introduction to yourselves. Thanks! "

Hedwig and The Angry Inch
Queer Musicians + Film = ?

Queer Cinema
"The addition of our talented new member nathan503 got me to thinking about representations of queer musicians and how they are portrayed and/or their music is used in film. For me, at least what is coming to mind at this moment, are the glam rockers; specifically Todd Haynes' Velvet Goldmine and John Cameron Mitchell's Hedwig and the Angry Inch. Both films are written and directed by gay men about queer musicians and miraculously succeed at telling poignant, engaging stories that don't fall victim to the abundance of stereotypical cliches that so many others do.Within recent years, a number of films have begun to delve into the lives of rather famous musicians of the past whose queer sensibilities have only recently come to light. Irwin Winkler's De-Lovely which chronicles the life of Cole Porter, and Atom Egoyan's Where The Truth Lies. Unfortunately, due to the (homophobic) powers that be, the films tended to skim the surface of this aspect of their lives and ul ... "

"Hehe, awesome, I love debates!About Kissing Jessica Stein. As I've stated before in a post about coming out of the closet, I felt that Kissing Jessica Stein was a good movie. I know from the aspect of a queer audience viewing it the film does get reach that point of "oh gosh . . ." but I do have to say that it is what it is and it is a well made romantic comedy that showcases a queer subject matter in a positive light. I think that depending on ones station they will perceive it differently, i.e. - how I was able to relate to the coming out process of the films main character and the struggle to accept her newfound sexuality because I was getting to do the same at the same time I viewed the film. But I also can understand how others might view it in a negative light.Imagine Me & You was just alright in my opinion. I suppose the sitution and wedding scenario was just unidentifiable to me and left me rather blaise about the film in general. Not that it was bad, just not for me.To ... "

"Wow, that's great. You have to make sure and let everyone know when it will be available. My best friend from college was going out with the creater of RIck and Steve: The Happiest Gay Couple In All The World for a while and know what a huge deal it is for him that that short film was chosen to become a weekly animated series on Logo. I already saw the first few minutes they posted on the network website and its hilarious (despite continuing on cliched queer themes - but hey, it's something). Hopefully this trend of diverse and wideranging genres of film and television of queer subject matter will continue. "

"Wow, that sounds like my dream job.I'm in desperate need of Netflix. Within a month I had already checked out the entire selection of queer films at my local Blockbuster and considering the area I live in (Central California - if you've driven through it you know) I doubt I'll be able to anytime in the near future. "Hey, thanks for accepting!I'm still rather torn on Big Eden. Part of me despises it for pandering to the cliched "gay fairy tale" yet some other part of me kinda likes that and realizes the necessity of it.Yes, I definitely agree with you about Love, Valor and Compassion. Not that I need to type it all, but I will, the film follows the same ideas that gay men are all image-obsessed and slowing dying of AIDS, referring to one another as queens and faggots yet being greatly offended when someone else even slightly hints at a homophobic remark. Being that I am younger and am not immersed in the gay community, I do believe that the film probably did typify a subset of the gay population at the time (and undoubtedly still today) that eludes me so I can't be totally harsh against it.Wow, how was it (Three Bewildered People In The Night)? I have yet to talk to anyone that has seen it. The only event I was able to attend at last years Outfest was one of the panels, but it was definitely wo ... "
